Bills' Draft Plan to make the 2012 playoffs

Recommended Posts

If the Bills are smart they will continue to stockpile their defense with the best players available to them. With a much greater emphasis on defense (you can already see the positive affect that Coach Wannstedt is having) they can finally knock off the Pats by winning the AFC East and subsequently qualifying for the playoffs.

The best possible scenario for the Bills would then be the following:

1. Sign LT D. Bell prior to the draft. He can get the job done at LT and allow the Bills to concentrate on improving the defense.

2. Draft a top notch CB at #10 overall (i.e. D. Fitzpatrick) or even better, trade down a few spots, take the CB at that position and acquire a late R1 pick for our first R4 pick (essentially our R1 (10) & R4 picks for possibly R1 (14) & R1 (27)).

We could then do the following:

R1 (14) - Draft CB D. Fitpatrick (this fills a big need and gives us more depth at a very important position; quality cover CBs are a must vs NE's receivers).

R1 (27) - Claim WR M. Wallace and forfeit the pick to Pittsburgh. This fills another big need and allows Gailey to stretch opposing defenses because of Wallace's trmendous speed and big play ability. The Bills will not be able to obtain a bigger impact player than Wallace for thier offense at this spot.

R2 - Draft QB Osweiler. Take best player available and fill another important need (i.e. a solid backup QB and the QB of the future for the Bills). With nine picks the Bills can afford to take a QB at this spot. They need somebody with more talent than Thigpen to develop for the future behind Fitzpatrick.

R3 - Draft an OLB. Fills a need. Bills would then have Barnett, Morrison, R3, and Moats at OLB.

R4 - Draft a S. Fills a need. More depth/talent is needed at S.

R5a - Draft a TE. Fills a need for a second TE to backup Chandler.

R5b- Draft a LT. Fills a need for another LT even though Hairston can play LT and RT. Can't have too many guys who can play LT.

R6 - Draft a MLB. Fills a need for a backup spot behind Sheppard. Bills would then have Sheppard, C. White, and R6 at MLB.

R7 - Draft an OC/OG. Fills a need behind Wood.

Even if the Bills don't sign another FA (and it seems more likely that they will), the roster would look like this:

Offense - 23

QB: Fitzpatrick/R2/B. Smith. Solid depth and good versatility. Could still sign an undrafted FA QB to develop.

RB: F. Jackson/Spiller/Choice. It would be ideal to pick up a big back for short yardage/goal line situations. B. Jacobs is still available.

FB: McIntyre. Good FB. Very good ST player.

TE: Chandler/R5/(Nelson). Would rather take an extra LB or S than keep TE L. Smith (better depth/better ST) otherwise Smith would be the thrid TE.

WR: M. Wallace/St. Johnson/Nelson/Easley/Hagan/(B. Smith). Martin/D. Jones/Hagan fight for fifth WR spot. Martin could win the fifth spot for ST reasons. Tough call at this point.

LT: Bell/R5/(Hairston).

OG: Levitre/Urbik/Rheinhart.

OC: Wood/R7.

RT: Pears/Hairston.

Special Teams - 3

K/P/LS: Lindell/Moorman/Sanborn. Solid group.

Defense - 27

DE: Ma. Williams/M. Anderson/Merriman/Kelsay/(Moats). Moats can be a situational pass rusher.

DT: K. Williams/Dareus/D. Edwards/Sp. Johnson/Troup.

OLB: Barnett/Morrison/R3/Moats/(B. Scott).

MLB: Sheppard/White/R6.

CB: A. Williams/R1/Florence/McGee/McKelvin/Rogers.

SS: Wilson/R4/Searcy.

FS: Byrd/B. Scott.

I believe you mean KIRKpatrick haha  and your trade down scenario is a little difficult to understand. I think it seems kinda ridiculous for someone to trade the 10th pick with 2 4th rounders and in return receive picks #14 and #27. I cant think of anyone who would be dumb enough to accept that trade and i dont get how it would even make any sense. Dallas has pick 14 and New England has pick 27. How does this trade down scenario work at all?
