2010 vs 1985 Team

Some recent postings have compared this years' Bills team to the horrible teams of the past, and the year 1985 keeps coming up, largely because that team won only two games. Here is a partial list of starters on the 1985 team:

Greg Bell

Joe Cribbs

Jerry Butler

Andre Reed

Pete Metzelaars

Ken Jones

Jim Ritcher

Will Grant

Joe Devlin

Fred Smerlas

Bruce Smith

Darryl Talley

Jim Haslett

Charles Romes

Steve Freeman

Scott Norwood

John Kidd

If this is the team we're comparing to this year's pathetic squad, then we are in worse trouble than ever. Is there anyone on today's squad you would clearly take over the names on this list except for the P/K?

Obviously we had no quarterback in 1985, and the team was waiting for Jim Kelly to arrive. But there clearly was talent. However, the Bills also had one Hank Bullough as coach, who was brought in on the cheap, had never won anything and was clearly in over his head. Sound familiar?

If we are fortunate to somehow draft the "right" quarterback in 2011, we still have no team around him, and the coaching staff right now looks every bit BulloughII.

Truly, these are dark days my friends.

The '85 team had no quarterback, was poorly coached, and was an odd mix of inexperienced youth and decent veterans. There was no way to know that the young guys on that team would blossom into good to great players they eventually evolved into. Obviously, major changes occurred over the next 3 years that turned also rans into perennial contenders thanks to Bill Polian.

Even though there are some talented names on that list I think the 2010 Bills are probably as talented or more so, and certainly better coached. Gailey at least has established credibility in the NFL... Bullough's only notoriety is having sucked as the Bills' HC in 1985. Whether or not he's added to the trash heap of Stephenson, Bullough, Mularkey, Williams, Jauron, et al remains to be seen.
