  1. The thing to remember is that the Buffalo media is filled with hacks. A few are really good, but most are hacks. They are interested in grinding their ax, not reporting or finding out relevant information. That press conference was crazy - all these idiot "reporters" trying to trap whaley into sounding stupid rather than finding actual valuable information. To me it sounded like the reporters already had their narrative, and were just trying to find quotes to fill out their story. Unprofessional.

I don't agree with this statement at all. These journalists are asking the questions WE ALL ask when we listen to the Bills and they write stories that we would all write, if we had the talent to do so. I don't get this mistrust of the media - I've worked in media relations my entire career - and I can honestly say the thing that 95% of journalists are most interested in is the truth. They want to tell the truth. So when faced with such obvious and bare-faced lies as they were this week they ask aggressive and searching questions because thats what they are there to do.

I will say - given my professional background - I love this thread. Completely agree with the analysis that kicked it all off. From my time at the top of the UK government, in the North American tech sector and Canadian education sector there are a million ways I would have handled the media differently over the last 3 weeks for the Bills. However, we all need to recognize that Berchtold and his media relations team (below) won't always be the final decision-makers on how to handle this stuff. They will advise and present options for handling and the senior team will act on that advice or they won't.

One comment I would make, based on some LinkedIn snooping is this: this is a very young team with limited exposure and experience in dealing with the media outside of the Bills context. I'm sure these are three good guys and I expect that they are probably pretty good at what they do - but as we evaluate this team and every portion of it - I'd want to see the MR team infused with some talent with a broader deeper background. And with some license to shape the reporting they way that real media relations works in other places (making some assumptions about their role...)

We get daily transcripts from the team after practice and post-game. The difference between what's said and what they tell people is said is staggering.

They leave whole paragraphs out if it's not something they particularly agree with. Like on Monday, no mention of Gilmore talking about not wanting the tag.

That's shameful. If it's said - it's the job of the media relations team to pass on accurately what was said. Not leave it out. That's what generates mistrust between PR and Media.

Do you work for the Bills? You posted the exact same comment on another post...hmmmmmm.

    LOL @ Tannins. Good call.

  2. i swear, i didn't realize this had become a big thing. i read this thread earlier today and made a few calls to find out what was up.

that said, i didn't take another look at this thing until just a few minutes ago and realized that it had become A BIG THING until it wasn't.

    it's not.

    LOL

Not to be completed until April 2017. Seems like a long time to build a simple grass practice field.

    Grass has gotta grow man...

  3. Have the QB's really looked that bad in camp? Are the reports accurate or is it not overstated.

I was at camp last Sunday - and they were all awful that day. EJ by far the worst that Sunday. It's really not over stated. Friday will be a good litmus test.

On another note - I don't think Goodwin makes this team. Yes he is fast, but oddly in camp you could see that every time he makes a catch he is inexplicably in the air - I mean, off the ground, jumping, taking off - even to make a routine "in" in warmups. It was maddening to watch. I don't see Rex wanting to keep a guy like that - particularly when harbin can do the gadget plays that you might have thought of using Goodwin for in the past.

  4. EJ aside - starting two rookies on the OL is not a great indicator for success. Lo and behold, they got abused at times. The inability to solve the OL riddle is the main reason we've performed so poorly the last two weeks on offence.

And can we start talking LBs? The absence of Alonso is killing us. The current crop cannot cover and nor are they great at tackling in the open field. Great at run D - woeful otherwise.

These are all factors for what will likely be a really up and down season. Do we really have to start debating the next FSU QB pick?

  5. dude....im not digging up your threads. We are having a conversation now. If you dont feel like restating it thats ok.

I feel that short of using a draft pick on another QB (and then taking the time to groom THAT QB) there was nothing even romotely close to being a definate solution at QB

The bills decided to biuld the team up around EJ manuel......we are stacked on OL, WR, and RB......we have depth on top of depth. And they are bringing along their 1st round QB.

If he falls on his face this year.....it will be time to make a change. I dont think he is going to.

    +1

  6. Buftex - I'm leery of reading anything from his presser performances as it relates to his relationship with the team. This isn't about that - it's about his relationship with the media and the tactics he is clearly intentionally employing with them. It's really the contrast from last year to this year that has me most puzzled.

It's almost like one of the media slept with his wife or something.

  7. How has this thread reached 16 pages?

EJ needs more time. He has time to get that time. If he'd have played more we'd al be on Marrone. He's an NFL QB, was treated like one and needs to get more regular season time under his belt for ANY of us to evaluate him.

Can't we just accept he's our guy until he's not?

  8. I'm so glad this thread is here. I am honestly at a loss with Marrone.

It strikes me a number of things are in play here and we won't know the truth, ever. There's so much you can read from his behaviour. One moment, I agree with all the various theories y'all have posted. Then I'm wondering if this is a sign of a coach who's unhappy in his position as coach and is looking to antagonize the media to in some way precipitate his departure.

Media relations in the modern NFL is as tough as it has ever been - so I have to credit anyone involved. People in government don't experience the kind of adversarial, negative and hatchet journalism that can appear from time to time in sports. (But not all the time - our Bills beat journalists I think on the whole are very fair and balanced.)

But on the other hand - what the heck did the journalists get out of that press conference? It's a mockery. You might as well not have the presser. Total waste of time. I just don't see how they are being sensibly equipped to do their jobs - and they have a role to play in the perceived success of the franchise.

There has to be a halfway house.

  9. Random thing - but I am looking to get my hands on a sport coat in royal blue. Doesn't need to be new. Just needs to be a 44 regular and royal blue. Actually - second hand would be ideal.

If you spot one, or if you have one and you're looking to part ways with it - let me know.

  10. I thought we have had good runs with our FA signings over the last decade, especially on defense. On offense we rarely sign FA.

Not many FA came to Buffalo and became Pro Bowlers did they? Takeo Spikes. London Fletcher - but he went on to be a Redskin legend. Troy Vincent? Lawyer Milloy? Mario Williams counts. But this is a really thin list.

  11. On the section about Cyrus K - they showed a screen grab of a web page. That web page was to the web-base software of Intelemage, called inteleGRID® Secure Medical Image Exchange.

I'm not sure this means anything other than the status of Cyrus' knees was a matter of deep concern and they had scans of his knees to look at.
