  1. Peters was brought in as an oversized TE. He played on special teams (and had a blocked punt/TD as I recall), and was moved to the OL because he was so big, strong and agile. This agility enabled him to be switched to LT, where Gandy was a nightmare.

I didn't rationally expect him to play as well as he did in 06 with such little time at LT, but he was an instant upgrade. He was able to handle speed rushers and actually push them outside by extending his arms. He is not only fast, but very strong.

Imo, Peters has a chance to be an exceptional LT in this league, and they are at a huge premium because they are just so scarce, and teams will not let go of them.

Peters and Dockery manning the left side of our line are going to be the AFC's version of what Seattle had going a couple years ago with Walter Jones and Steve Hutchinson. I am still a little worried about RG though. Duke Preston just has not impressed me whatsoever in the past two years. He either has to step up, or there needs to be some fierce competition between Whittle, Merz and Butler to start. Who thinks we draft a guard to play on the rightside first day?

  2. I see us as having only two holes right now. RB to go with Thomas, and LB to go with Crowell and Ellison. We need to get starting caliber players at those two positions, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see us pick twice in the 1st round to do it. Every other position is one we will try to improve on, but are sitting pretty good, even CB, so beyond our two big needs, I think the rest of the draft is more about quality depth and players with upside, not people expected to step in and start.

Last year of our picks: Ellison, Whitner, Simpson, Williams, and Pennington all started games (and technically Youboty becaused we opened against the Jets in the nickel). I don't think there is any chance this draft needs to yield five starters, and as such as long as we get a good LB and a decent RB there isn't a ton of pressure on the other picks. I think the Willis/Poz at #12 becomes very likely since that is both our biggest hole, and it is possible that one of those guys will be the top available guy on your non-need draft board. Although if Willis goes #11 and Peterson falls, I could see Peterson at #12 and trading up to get someone like Poz.

But I do think Willis is probably our pick if he isn't off the board.

Now that we have a good DT in the fold, I think after getting a solid running back and linebacker with probably our first two picks, that we very well may look for another deep threat in a big wide receiver. Or, I would not be shocked if we got Pozluzny and somehow got right back in the first round and took the tight end Olsen from the U. (Assuming A-Pete is gone when we pick at 12) We can than use one of our other 3rds to get the RB we need.

Marv is going to make the necessary moves to make us a contender once again. Go Bills

  3. What do you think about trading down, taking Poz later in the first round or whoever they like best say anywhere betweeb 15 and 20, than taking David Harris in the 2nd to man the middle? (He is a tackling machine) And we would still have another 2nd and two thirds, or three thirds to take a CB, DL and possibly a big number two type receiver. That would be like Christmas in April!!

How big of a difference would there be between Willis and Harris manning the middle for us?

Oh, how could I forget, one of those five picks would have to be our new stud running back either in the 2nd or third round.

  4. After watching the Senior Bowl again a couple of time in the last two days, I'm actually convinced that he WON'T be their pick. I think he's the deluxe version of London Fletcher.

He's an excellent athlete and that allows him to make plays all over the field, but he is not a particularly strong between-the-tackles run defender. He is not all that physical when taking on blocks and seems to prefer to allow the RB to come to him, hesitating instead of attacking. He certainly is an excellent tackler once the RB gets there. Unfortunately, if he gets blocked before that happens, he usually can't fight off that blocker and will be driven out of the play. He also looked more than a bit lost in zone coverage, especially dropping far too deep early in the game with no one threatening his zone, allowing RBs to release underneath over the middle uncontested, though this should be correctable. IMO, he's a pursuit type LB who will make a lot of plays at the edge of the field and will eventually become a very good coverage LB once he gets some coaching. But I don't think he'll ever be more than an average between-the-tackles run stuffer at the MLB position.

Of course, that's just my opinion.

  5. Don't forget that Fletcher also lobbied hard for Holcomb to start as late as beginning of last season.

I think Clements was a much more team player than people credit him for.

All I can say to all the "London Lovers" is look where we ended up in run defense the past two seasons. Changes had to be made. I don't think anyone on this board would have been happy if we gave London the contract that Washington did. Leadership is great if it translates into wins on the field. Enough said.

  6. Hasty Generalization at its finest.

I'm not sure if this was directed to me or not, but I will answer as if it were (directed to me). No, I'm not saying to write off the season. I hope the Bills go 16-0 and win the Super Bowl, next season. I truly do! But what I want to know is where this huge sense of hope is coming from(?) Let me please review:

We have lost: Takeo Spikes (assuming), London Fletcher, Nate Clements, and Willis McGahee. We have no one to replace Willis McGahee. Haha {insert} funny joke about how horrible we all perceive Willis McGahee to be {here}. We are simply hoping that the draft will answer the need for a RB. We have no one proven to replace Fletcher or Spikes. We have Ellison - a real nice kid who shows signs of good play, but I also remember a fair bit of criticism from others, although I cant remember the exact comments. So we are depending on Crowell, Ellison, and the draft to make up for our LB needs. We have Youboty to replace Nate Clements. Do I really need to say anything else about that? Probably not, but I will. Youboty is about as unproven as an NFL player could be. We have seen little to nothing of him since the Bills have drafted him. To compliment him (or vice versa) we have McGee (or toast mcgee as some people like to call him).

From what I have gathered from the other side of the viewing gallery, we have this: The Bills are re-building and Marv has given us no reason to doubt him as of yet, and we will fulfill our needs in the draft. {insert another joke about how we can easily find another running back like Willis McGahee}. The season, or training camp for that matter, has not yet begun and thus we can not think about criticizing anything until its week 6 and we are doing poorly.

Why are you so concerned about the guys we have lost or our about to lose? We have won nothing with Clements, Spikes, Willis and London. Everyone gets so caught up in these so called "name players". We have not gone to one playoff game with any of them. One of the big problems with this team over the past few years is that our supposed best players were not that good. Willis has done nothing since 2004, ditto for Spikes, Nate was inconsistent at best, and London has consistently gotten run over for years. The guys we are getting rid of have no upside, still want big contracts, and and are not positive influences on the team. Why do I want to keep them? Marv and Dick know that.

The guys we are keeping (Kelsay, A-Train, K-Thomas, Lindell) and signing (Dockery, Walker) the Bills feel still have a lot of upside potential as well as are good team players and locker room guys. What a lot of you are forgetting is that team chemistry is very important. I think we have upgraded that quality considerably. The upgrades on the O-line, continued improvement of JP, a second year under the new regime, add in some quality players in the draft, and I think we are moving in the right direction. The guys we let go of were not leading us to the playoffs. Management knew this. To be down at this point in the offseason is shortsighted and depressing.

  7. it would surprise me as well, because it would mostly mean we arent happy with Crowell or Ellison. and while i believe they COULD be upgraded, THAT isnt where the need is at LB.

To have a successful defense we need more than three good linebackers. If we can add Willis and Pozluzny and still get a decent running back in the third round than I will be very satisfied. Unless the Bills really love one of there reserves (Haggen, Stamer, Degregorio, or Wire) to play a lot, adding two studs at linebacker makes this unit the strong point on our defense.

  8. While his only highlight reel play was the season-opener, I thought his play steadily improved throughout the season. Also, Spikes was due to make 4.6 million this year. Fletcher could have been signed for 5 yrs 25 million dollars. Langston Walker is making 5 million a year. Is anyone going to compare Langston Walker as a player to either Spiker or Fletch?? To me, the Walker signing was senseless and has now left us periliously thin at the LB position, as well as at running back. Unless this draft class is going to be one of the best in Bills history, I see this team as being worse than last years unit. I hate to give this doomsday forecast, but the decisionsthis off-season have been nothing short of baffling.

Spikes play steadily improved to marginal by the end of the season. The bottom line is he is NO LONGER A GAMECHANGER. I just don't get why everyone is so worked up about losing Spikes and Fletcher. Our run D was terrible last year, and those two guys had a whole lot to do with it. Have trust and faith in Marv and Dick that they know what they're doing. Come opening day, I think we will all be please with our linebacking group.

Tell me again how many playoff games we won or played in with Spikes, Fletcher and Clements. If the Steelers can let Joey Porter go while he is still somewhat in his prime, than the Bills can certainly let a damaged Spikes go.

  9. I'm merely suggesting that you can win more than 2 games over the previous season. And you don't have to acquire big name talent to do that. I think this board has agreed the path to success begins on draft day. But free agency is there to fill in for those times you can't stock a position through the draft or need help right away. The draft takes 2-3 years normally.

Listen, I'm not advocating getting name free agents every year. We can agree that's not the solution. But a little spending goes a long way to enhancing the draft. Dockery, Langston, and Whittle have been signed to improve the OL and I believe they'll do just that. But did any other area improve? The answer is decidedly no. We're wishing and hoping that what we had last season combined with improvement in now 2nd year and drafted players will provide the difference. Plain and simple, it seems to me that expectations are modest for the 2007 season.

As for Levy, still a great guy. He's not bad as a person or coach. But GM remains to be seen. Unless that press conference was a complete and purposely misrepresentation of his knowledge, I'm not really confident of his abilities to be an NFL GM. HOF coach...newcomer to GM. We want to give Marv credit for everything, but how much did Polian, Butler, Smith, and Adams contribute to those late eighties and early nineties teams? In their sted we have Tom Modrak and Jim Overdorf. Just because Marv believes in character players doesn't mean that's a dynamic or new-wave approach. That's been going on now a few years. The Dockery signing was huge and I'm glad for it. It will come off like a kid not getting enough on Christmas, but I was expecting more beyond that.

Not once did I insinuate being a Super Bowl team. There's 32 teams in this league and that's not going to happen. But 12 teams get into the playoffs. And just once I'd like to be one of those 12.

Dude, you have got to relax a bit. The fact that we have improved the O line is a godsend. It has been terrible for years. If this line plays like we hope it can and can finally open some holes for the run game, and our other young players get better as you would expect with more experience, we could be looking at a 3-4 win increase. Also, getting rid of Willis and anybody else with a negative attitude will only help matters. And if we get at least the same contributions from this years draft class as last years, I see us having at least a very good shot at a wild card. Try and drink some of the Kool aid, it makes life more enjoyable. GO BILLS

  10. That's interesting.

For me it was the JESTS. Hands down.

    1 OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson

    1 C Nick Mangold

    2 QB Kellen Clemens

    3 ILB Anthony Schlegel

    3 S Eric Smith

    4 QB Brad Smith

    4 RB Leon Washington

    5 TE Jason Pociask

    6 CB Drew Coleman

    7 DT Titus Adams

First off - trades brought them two round one picks, two threes and two fours. That's a lotta picks on the first day. A LOT of people here wanted Marv to trade down with the same scenario that the Jests used. Let's just say it heightened the frustration level here of many last year.

With that draft they got huge immediate improvements to their OL - although the way they played, Mangold could have been taken first. Unfortunately for us he's a great replacement for Mahwae - who Parcells brought in specifically to handle Ted Washington btw.

Two QBs - nice for grooming over time, a LB and two DBs and a DLineman and a RB for cheap in the later rounds.

That was good work by Bradway. That coupled with an amazing recovery by Pennington and Mangini looking more like Mangenious than the Mangina I thought he would be made for a very productive season for Gangrene. :D

Now I'm not saying Marv screwed the pooch last year and generally speaking I'm very pleased with the year most of his draftees had, and yes their future looks bright. But, it's hard to look at what the JESTS did and not think they're building a-la the NewenGland method. That's not especially good news for the boys in Red, White and Blue in Western New York and their fans.

D'Brick was overrated. I am glad the Bills did not end up taking him. Schobel ate him up in there meeting in the Meadowlands last year. He looked like he hadn't a clue. I like Peters a whole lot better at left tackle.

Don't worry about the Jests, as long as they pop gun shooting Pennington, they aren't going anywhere. GO BILLS

  11. I think it's simpler than that, but that they are thinking and preparing both ways. I think they simply have a dollar amount that they want to sign him for. Right now he and his agent are asking a little too much. If they come down to near the Bills number we will sign him unless another team gets him to be closer to their number first. I think we'd like him to be part of the RBBC but will draft a RB regardless. And it will be Brown/A Train/Draft Pick, or it will be A Train/Draft Pick/Shaud or Jackson. I don't really think it makes MUCH difference to us in the Lynch/Peterson sweepstakes either. If those guys are there, especially Peterson, and our scouts like him a lot they will take him with or without Brown. Those are three different kinds of runners, and Brown is not likely to sign a long term deal but more likely 1-2 years.

My god if the Bills really like Chris Brown and want him to be there man carrying the rock than they should not be cheap about signing him. They obviously wanted Dockery and Walker a lot so they went out and paid them good money to get them to sign. If we really like a guy, than we should pay them market value. I don't think that who we sign is based that much on how much money they are asking for. I think it is based on how much the Bills really like them. I don't think the Bills are really that crazy about Chris Brown. If they were and thought he was the future at running back, than we would have signed him by now.

Despite what everyone thinks about the Bills being cheap with there "cash to cap" economics, the truth is that they will pay if they want to keep or sign someone. (see: Kelsay, Dockery, Walker) I doubt we ever sign Chris Brown. And for god sakes has there ever been so much discussed about a marginal running back who is currently out of a job?

Marv, either sign him or tell the world we don't want him so we can move on to the next subject. PLEASE

  12. In today's update Alan Branch is off the big board. Is he the next Jonathan Sullivan, Jimmy Kennedy or Ryan Sims? If he is available at 12 do we take him? I usually respect Mel's rankings, but most other experts have him rated higher.

If Okoye, Willis and Peterson are all off the board when we pick at 12, we can trade down a few spots and probably still get Branch and add some picks as well, than trade back into the first round and get Pozluzny, the best corner left on the board, or maybe the tight end from Miami Olsen. All of a sudden Alan Branch sucks, what did he lose one of his legs? He will be a beast in the pros.

  13. NO -

the comparison is whether he can play zone coverage and replace McGee.

Interesting. Are you saying we go with the big ten pairing of Leon Hall and Ashton Yobouty as our starting corners with Terrence McGee as the nickel back? Basically two rookies starting. Both skilled but rookies nonetheless. McGee's best coverage seems to be when he is covering an inside slot receiver.

  14. That's just stupid. He got hurt working his ass off and always played as hard as he could. It wasn't his fault. There are just as many players in the league who get paid too little for their production as get paid too much. Should teams retro-pay players for previous seasons where they were underpaid but over-produced?

I got to meet Takeo last year doing his rehab down in Atlanta. He worked out at the same gym as me. (Also saw Jamal Lewis and Hines Ward there as well for what its worth) The man was not very positive about the upcoming season, and was very pissed when the Bills took Whitner with the first pick instead of Ngata or Bunkley. While he was working out hard, his attitude about the team in general was pretty poor. I think he is a clubhouse lawyer who is only happy when he has a lot of veterans surrounding him. (gives him that comfort zone) His play last year for the most part was average on good days and god awful on other days. Did you ever remember guys running thru his tackles like they did last year? I won't lose sleep if he gets cut or traded. The national media will roast us if we cut him, but at this point in his career he is just a name. The guy had no lateral movement whatsoever last year.

  15. Man - I hope Carr doesn't go to Miami. If they ever get a good OL, Carr could be good in S Fla...

Please, Carr has happy feet every time he drops back from center. His line in Houston was not top notch, but anytime a QB is getting sacked as much as he was, the QB has to take some of the blame.

  16. I think their thinking is that he would help to make implementing the new offense a little smoother. I don't think they will invest a ton of money in him though.

There QB situation is a mess. Even though we have a lot of holes to fill, the biggest thing we have going is that our QB is on the verge of being something special. He can play. As long as we have that, we can fill in the rest. Trent Green behind the porous Miami line? Bad things man, bad things.

  17. All things equal, if I needed a QB, and these were the only two available, I would take Carr, as he is younger, more athletic, and may not nearly as bad somewhere else. That said, I think the Dolphins will/should/are going to go with Green, because he knows Camerons' offense inside out. The Chiefs need to unload him (they don't want to pay him his fat salary, as well as Huard, who just re-signed with a nice new deal), and with Greens' age, I don't imagine there is a ton of other teams interested. Offering a 7th round pick for Green might just be Miamis way of ensuring they get Green, rather than letting him be cut, and get in a bidding war with other teams. I suspect the Chiefs will go for the deal. Maybe they will hold out and try to get a sixth or seventh, but, either way, in the end, I suspect Green is wearing the Dolphins puke colors, come September.

Trent Green is washed up. He looked horrible in the playoff game against Indy. I think the concussion he took in week 1 really took a lot out of him. Another brilliant move by the Fish. Will they bring in Jeff George to back him up?

  18. Correct if the Bills are listing heavily toward the taking the BPA. No matter what folks say is their "theory" of how teams are best built in the NFL which results in most GMs saying they are going after the best player available all the time. reality simply forces teams to strike a balance between taking BPA or addressing needs.

For example, though I think Marv is honestly a true believer in the concept that it all starts with running or stopping the run, the reality was that last year we drafted a SS candidate with our #8 neither trading up for a D'Brick, taking Halata (seen along with Bunkley as the best likely run stuffers, or trading down.

We took the guy we wanted at #8 despite the conventional wisdom clearly seeing that as way too early to pick a mere safety and the guy we wanted was to fill a need.

We might take Hall as a BPA choice, but to do this would seem to have us listing way over toward going with the BPA side of our personality and ignoring several areas of need where we have even fewer candidates for starter than we have with Youbouty and Thomas at CB (RB for example where Anthony Thomas who has not been a starter in 4 years and he barely logged a 1000 yards in a career best 13 starts is the best we can do.

When you are talking about Leon Hall the bigh question is this. Is he better or will he better than Ashton Yobouty? I watched a lot of Leon Hall the past 4 years being a big Michigan fan. (Go Blue) He has very sound fundamentals as far as playing tight coverage on the shorter routes and fighting for the football. He also has good hands when it comes to making interceptions. However, in the Rose Bowl and against Ohio State he was torched by Dwayne Jarrett and several OSU receivers. In other words, he played small in big games. Ashton has better size, and he was also a player at OSU. I liked what I saw from Yobouty in the short time he played last year. So I don't think Hall is that big if any of an upgrade from Yobouty.

I think the Bills like Yobouty a lot. That is part of the reason they let Nate go without a fight. Given that they have Yobouty, I do not see us drafting a DB in the first round. We have much greater needs on defense, and that is in the front seven. We need at least one if not two solid linebackers to add to the mix, especially if TKO is physically done. And lets not forget that we still need a big man to stop the run.

At RB, I like Chris Brown and think if healthy he will have a better year than Willis. This guy has a burst with some moves, and there is not too much mileage on the treads. I think they should draft a running back no earlier than the 3rd or 4th round (Lorenzo Booker) and put him in the mix with Brown, Thomas and Jackson. I also would not be suprised if we draft a tight end in the first three rounds. That need may be greater than at DB. We can never have enough weapons for JP the gunslinger.

  19. Theres few things I enjoy seeing more at the stadium than someone in a bryce paup jersey.

I have been wearing that jersey since 1996. It still hangs in my closet and gets worn on the occasional game day when I feel we really need to bring out some of that old magic. He was one bad ass coming off of the edge.

  20. 4. is neither are there than a trade down to grab best available players of need based on trade down position

thanks- that was part of my thought process that did not make it into the post

The Bills need some gamechanging playmakers on offense. Right now we do not have many other than Lee. If Adrian Peterson is off the board when we pick, I think we take Marshawn Lynch or trade down a few picks and hopefully take him at 15 or 16 depending on what the teams directly behind us need. (Green Bay needs a running back big time)

I think the Bills would be happy going into the season with a defense that is above average to the decent range. What I think they really want to improve on is there offense. If we get the offense in high gear, (which will happen with a more experienced JP) we can win a lot games with an above average defense. And of course our great special teams.

I would not be suprised if we drafted another receiver and/or tight end in the first three rounds. I think Marv is playing possum, and will have some big suprises come draft day. Adding Lynch, and another big time receiver very well could happen despite our needs on D. Remember, we can still draft a first day DL and LB, in addition to getting Lynch and another downfield threat.

  21. i didnt want to short change the new champs and say that Denver was the team to beat in the AFC. but given the history of how the winners of the Super Bowl usually do the year after... id say the Broncos are the team to beat in the AFC... ;)

Don't forget they still have a QB that started maybe six games in his career. Jay Cutler will not have it easy next year. You can bet that teams playing the Broncos will watch film of him from last year, and come up with a defense to defend him successfully. Remember the last two games of 2006, Denver should have lost to Cinci, but the snap on the extra point that would have tied the game was horrible, and the holder had no chance to get the ball down. Then, in there last game against San Francisco, the Broncos blew a 4th quarter lead, and missed the playoffs because of the loss.

My point is that the Broncos are a paper tiger. They lost 4 of there last 6 games with one of those wins being the above mentioned against the Bengals. They have a very young and erratic QB. So don't get all excited about them signing an injury prone #3 possession receiver.

  22. If Okoye or Peterson is still there at 12, we have to take one of them. If they are both gone my best guess is that we trade down a few spots and take some combination of running back and linebacker with our two first round picks. (obviously, this presupposes that we take our extra pick from trading down from 12 and get back into the end of the first round) How about Marshawn Lynch and Pozlusny? That is two starters right there men.

We put Crowell in the middle, and than let Ellison, Spikes, and Pozlusny fight it out as to who starts. I think we may even bring in another linebacker later on to put into the mix as well. Remember that Ellison is a sixth round pick who was able to play. I believe the Bills feel that anyone they draft on defense has a chance to really contribute. No projects will be drafted on the defensive side of the ball.

  23. Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Of these 8 possibilities, I will eliminate tennessee, houston, kansas city, and tampa. (a guess)

I doubt it would be jacksonville.

so, I predict dnver at colts, or new england at colts, or new orleans at colts.

I'd love to see brady get crushed befoe the bills even suit up. (heh heh)

I think that the NFL will not open with New England at Indy, because they will want this always titanic matchup to be set for midseason to amp up the hype of what will probably be a huge game between two of the best in the league. Both teams playing well going against each other in the second half of the season is a huge ratings booster for a Sunday nighter say in Mid-November.

I see New Orleans at Indy opening night. Lots of story lines, two very good teams.

  24. Below is a rumor of Briggs to the Pats for one of their 2 first round picks:

    e. He said the Bears had a seven-year, $33-million contract offer on the table for Lance Briggs last year, but haven't offered him a multi-year deal this offseason. It's either play the year at $7.2 million (poor guy), sit out (he'll never do that) or hope some team comes to the Bears (the Patriots?) and says, "We'll give you a low first-round pick for Briggs,'' and then signs him to a $7 million-a-year deal with $20 million guaranteed.

First of all, Peter King loves the Patriots beyond any other team. Read his Monday column regularly and you will see that Brady can do no wrong, and that every move Belichik makes is unparalleled. (Does Robert Kraft pay his salary?)

That being said, the Bears would be downright stupid to trade Briggs for a low first round pick. If they were really considering doing that, than the Bills need to get in the action. Trade down from 12 a few spots, and pick up the best available player at RB,DT,CB,or LB with say the 15th or 16th pick. Than take the extra third, packaging it with our 2nd and trade back up into the first round. Use that late first rounder and trade it to the Bears for Briggs. Give him a big, but fair contract, and we are set at outside linebacker. To save cap space we would probably have to cut TKO.

How about a linebacking group of Briggs, Willis, Crowell, and Ellison? A guy can dream can't he.

  25. 1. RB Adrian Peterson-there's no way he's there at 12---if he slips from the top 5 someone will trade up for him--I'll guarantee that.

    2. RB Marshawn Lynch

    3. ILB Patrick Willis

    4. CB Leon Hall

If it was me and if one of those four guys isn't there I would trade down just a couple of picks getting another #2 in the process. I might consider trading down anyway.

And just to add drama to the draft--like many accused the Bills of doing last year, my #5 selection is:

5.Greg Olsen-TE (Miami)-6'5 and runs with 4.4 speed. A mismatch at TE and a big target.

If Olsen is still on the board say after the 25th pick, would the Bills trade there 2 and one of there three's to take him. A team that has so many holes to fill should never trade up giving away extra picks, but rather should trade down gaining extra picks to bring in more good young players. However, on the other hand it is tempting to think that way just a bit when you think of that additional downfield weapon for JP to throw to. Anyway its food for thought. (Excuse the cliche)
