  1. There are quite a number of families that decided to stay put in this area after fleeing Katrina, but the area continues to grow. Plenty of corp. headquarters in the area continue to attract folks to the area. I searched for #s related to Katrina but couldn't come up with anything quickly.

There's still plenty of land here for developing and while the housing industry has slowed, it is nowhere near as bad as other parts of the country.

what corp headquarters besides HSBC? Labatt?

anything high tech that will keep students from moving?

    more of these companies

won't help keep young people around

taxpayers can keep funding college educations and then ship people out of state

  2. I still take the 20 minute drive (during rush hour, maybe 25 minutes) into the city often for a Sabres game (30 minutes to OP for the Bills) or to go to some great restaurants or bars.

where in Amherst do you live? traffic after a Bills game in Orchard Park is so bad that I've seen men get out of their cars on the 90, drop a deuce and get back in, women I've seen get out, pop a squat to pee and hop back into their cars...

  3. You forgot to add in the psychic value of not having to live in DC (shorter commutes, friendlier people, access to a world-class city 90 miles away, etc.). In other words, actually enjoying life during those 10 years...

It's pretty easy to fix that, change DC to almost anywhere else in the country with an economy and you'll get the same situation he's describing...hell, it's cold up in NE but there's a ridiculous amount of high paying high tech jobs in Massachusetts and southern NH.

  4. I know.....I just don't like bitter former WNY'ers who have nothing better to do.....except bash the city and tell people that they are crazy for living or wanting to live there

I didn't want to leave...but my eyes were opened after leaving and I can't find many reasons to return other than for the sports and food.

  5. In Buffalo or down here. Hell we've got so much government/military jobs moving into mine and several surrounding counties, there won't be enough folks to fill them in 3 years.

Are they going to build heli-pads everywhere so people can avoid the congested highways?

I remember when I first moved to NH, people warned me, "yeah, no income tax and no sales tax is great, but the property tax will get ya!" I took one look at the taxes and laughed...The property tax I pay on my 300k home in NH is the same as what I paid in Rochester, NY...on a 100k home.

  6. Here's a novel idea. How about only allowing Democrats to vote in the Democrat primaries, and only Republicans in the Republican primaries. If people aren't willing to commit to a party, then they shouldn't have a say in who that party nominates for the general election. Don't like the choices, then start your own party.

Here's another idea...how about we take other parties more seriously so we don't to continually rely on those two joker parties for a president?

  7. I laid it on the line last game. I had to go shot-for-shot with a Buffalo Firefighter on vacation with no one else to drink with. I will be returning to the same bar tonight. I'm just hoping he's not there as I'm not sure I can sustain that sort of effort tonight. I plan on doing my part...but, there's only so much one The Dean can do.

I expect all of you to do your part and DRINK HEAVILY tonight.

BTW, for those of you underage posters...drink MORE. You're young, your body can shake it off quicker that my fat old-man body.

I made that mistake in Orlando

After drinking like crazy with a bunch of Buffalonians, I was so hungover the next day I puked AFTER having a full lunch @ 2pm.

    But hey, we won!

  8. I cried like a baby when the final seconds ticked off while the puck was sliding harmlessly down the ice in Gwinnett, Georgia. From the depths of EBay to an ECHL Championship.

I'm mildly worried about this happening to me if the Sabres win. My wife won't understand...just like how I don't understand how she gets all weepy during chick flicks.

  9. As far as the effects go, I'll believe the voodoo when the climatologists can accurately predict an El Nino based on their god forsaken computer modeling (they can't today and won't for a LONG time). If they can't predict a weather pattern that takes place between 20 and 25 times a century, there's no way I'm going to buy into the rest of the scare tactic (never mind that virtually none of it is occuring today).

    well said
