  1. Would be very happy if we get the third or fourth best player in the draft (McClain) and somebody (Cody) who will allow our LB's to run loose and make plays.

I've been touting this draft for several months now. Most mocks still have McClain on the board at 9. I'm a little more worried with Cody being there when we pick in the second. Usually, we've had no trouble moving up to get the guys we want in the late first or early second, with unfortunate results. (McCargo, and, to a much lesser extent Poz). Poz is alright, however we could have stayed pat and drafted a better player in David Harris.

This year, with all our needs and the depth in the draft, I'd be way more hesitant about losing picks to move up a few spots. Our surplus of picks in rounds 6+7 probably won't be much use to potential trade partners. This is where, I'd consider moving a guy like Whitner to Washington to move up a few spots in the second round and pick up a fourth or fifth as well.

This is, of course, if Cody or Dan Williams is still on the board at that point.

Ideally, we'd lose Whitner, get Cody, and pick up an extra 4th. Then with our third and two fourth round picks, I'd pick either the Three best tackles available, or the two best tackles available and finally add a skill position player as well.

Very doable, if Nix is on his game.

  2. This group could not stop anybody last year. If I'm not mistaken we were ranked 29th last year. Besides wishful thinking, what makes you think this group will vault to a respectable ( top 15 defense) in 2010? Do you think Kennedy is that good?

You are very much mistaken. They were ranked 19th. Also, as the previous poster mentioned, many of these players were hurt and missed significant time last year. That factor, combined with new players and a new scheme, could lead to very different results.

Nix knows that he can't fix everything at once, and, based on the beginning of this offseason, it doesn't look like he is trying to. However, I think with the right drafting, they could instantly turn the D into a top 10 unit for the next 5 years.

My ideal draft would be to go

    1: McClain

    2: Cody

    3. Best available left tackle

    4. Best available tackle, left or right.

To me that is a very realistic draft that would make this D young, tough, strong, and athletic. McClain, wherever he goes, will be a linchpin of a hungry aggressive D for the next 10 years. The kid seems like a natural leader, warrior, and would give this team instant credibility. Moreover, pairing Cody with McClain, his former teammate from Alabama, would tip Cody's boom/bust ratio in his favor. McClain wouldn't let Cody eat/drink his way out of the league.

I know this draft would mean our offense is likely bottom 10 next year, but I think that will be the case anyway. If the Bills made these moves, that would allow them to focus almost exclusively on the offense next year and would mean that maybe, they are only 1 year out of competing for a playoff berth.

  3. What would you give up to get another Reggie White?

Then again you just might get another Steve Entman-Brian Bosworth- Tony Mandarich- Erik Flowers- John McCargo- Courtny Brown- Kenneth Simms- Mike Mamula- Mike Williams-Reggie Rogers- Huey Richardson

Even when you think you know...you never know!

He'll def be better than the scrubs you just named. Unlike McCargo, he is not the 3rd best player on his college D-Line. Whether he will be as dominant as Reggie White or just a very good NFL player may be up for debate. But, I would be willing to bet, as would anyone who has actually seen him play, that he will be better than anyone the Bills could get at #9.

  4. Well, he certainly seems like a far more engaging guy than Jauron ever did. I think maybe the toughest hurdle for him to overcome initially is to win over the players. To the veterans on the team, such as Schobel, Kelsey, Evans, etc, this move has to smack of business as usual around the Ralph. I would imagine that those guys, as much as any fan, were excited to play for a Cowher or Schottenheimer.

  5. What I found interesting was Nix stating that the only person the HC job was offered to was Gailey. Not Cowher, or Shanahan? Does anyone else find that strange?

I find it patently dishonest. If there IS any truth to that, which I highly doubt, then this organization is More, not less dysfunctional than we think it to be.

  6. A shockingly bad choice, if true. Shocking. There is no conceivable way I can justify purchasing season tickets again. Fool me once... shame on you. Fool me 10 years in a row... shame on me. How even the most optimistic Bills fan could think this Nix-Gailey duo can be anything but putrid is beyond me. In all reality, and without any sort of irony, I think its fair to say that as Bills fans... we are in fact doomed.

  7. I'm not a lawyer but I believe it would be categorized as some form of Obstruction of Justice. Also, just because Maybin tweeted it doesn't mean he didn't also report it to the police.

Not at all. In fact, you can watch someone get murdered and you are under no obligation to report it. Only if you are subpoenaed by a grand jury or judge are you required to testify truthfully to anything you observed.

However, it sure makes Maybin look like a punk who has no regard for his fellow man. Not to mention, he sucks at football.

  8. Lynch is DONE!! I know Dt. Sgt. Crawford... very respected... high ranking narcotics detective. Don't know his wife, but it is hard to believe she is making this up.

Further, by the letter of the law, what Lynch did was robbery in the third degree. Robbery third=the taking of someone's property and using force OR the threat of force at the time of the taking OR to prevent the rightful owner's retention of said property at or very near the time of the taking. While that sounds like a mouthful, Lynch clearly used the threat of force just after he took the ladies $20.... That =Robbery third.

Legally speaking, the fact that Lynch returned the $20 some 10 days later is completely irrelevant.

Typically, a half assed robbery such as this one would generate a plea from the DA's office to a petit larceny charge, or even an attempted petit larceny charge, A and B misdemeanors. Either way, keep in mind Lynch is on probation! Any kind of criminal conviction would surely = a violation of that probation.... and of course he could do time on the new charge as well.

In conclusion, at first blush, it sure looks like Lynch is going to Jail. Once that is sorted out in the next few months, I would anticipate a year suspension from the league.

    What an absolutely worthless individual.

  9. Marty was fired in a year where his team was FOURTEEN AND TWO

The bills have not sniffed that for like EVER

    WTF

You have to love the logic. It is kind of like "Hey, even I haven't had sex for about a year, I'm not going to go home with that blonde at the bar, because she is only a 9.0. I demand to take home a 10!"

Marty may not be the best coach... but he is far better than the Bills deserve at this point.

  10. Buddy Nix was the scout for the Southeast during his tenure for the Bills. During this time the Bills drafted the following players from his region:(bolded are ones that had "decent" contributions for the Bills)

    93: Thomas Smith, Sebastian Savage

94: Bucky Brooks, Lonnie "friggin" Johnson, Marlo Perry, Corey Louchey, Sean Crocker

    95: Damien Covington, Ken Irvin

96: Eric Moulds, Gabe Northern, Matt Stevens

    97: Jamie Nails, Sean Woodson

98: Sam Cowart, Robert Hicks, Jonathan Linton

99: Peerless Price, Sean Bryson, Keith Newman, Bobby Collins

00: Travares Tillman, Corey Moore, Avion Black

Most of these picks were in 5th round or earlier

I don't think Travares Tillman's mama would say he contributed anything to the franchise. Ditto Corey Moore and Avion Black. That '00 draft may have been the worst in team history, and should have gotten a lot of people fired.

  11. I there's some truth to this, though it may be an unpleasant truth. The NFL is a watered-down version of what it was in the '90s so there are a LOT of players in the league who wouldn't have been able to make the '90s version of the Bills. Today's NFL is a sea of mediocrity. Having 32 teams has diluted the talent pool, both in terms of players as well as coaches and FO people.

As for the Bills, they have managed to win 5 games (though I'm not entirely sure how). To fix this team they should switch to a 3-4 defense. Put Stroud at NT with Williams and Schobel (if he doesn't retire) on the ends. Then get some good run-stuffing LBs. Keep Poz in there to call the defensive plays. Don't play ten yards off defenders on 3rd and less than 10.

As for the offense, I'd keep Levitre and Wood (maybe Hangartner?) and blow up the rest. Bell hasn't proven anything as far as I'm concerned. Obviously we need a new QB. But, with a good OL and the right coaching, you can win with mediocre QBs (e.g. Brad Johnson, Doug Williams, etc. all won Super Bowls). On the other hand, with a top-flight, mobile QB and a weak OL you can also do reasonably well (e.g. the Packers). It may not be possible to fix both at once so the smart thing would be to fix one or the other. I think the easier thing to do would be to fix the OL since the NFL is a little thin at QB. I wouldn't touch the RBs or WRs. A lot of teams have two good RBs these days so we should keep them both. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing TO stick around for another year just to see what he could do with a real QB.

Assuming the new regime switches to a 3-4, I guarantee they'd be a top 10 D for the next five years with this draft:

Round 1, pick 8: Rolando McClain, Alabama

Round 1, trading up: Terrance Cody, Alabama

Starting lineup for 2010 would look like:

    DL: Kyle Williams, Cody, Schobel

    Linebackers: Maybin, Mitchell, McClain, Poz

DBs: Mcgee, Mckelvin or Florence (with the other being the nickel back), Byrd, Wilson.

The offense could be at least temporarily fixed with some free agent signings at OL, WR, and a stopgap measure at QB. That draft would allow the Bills to look almost exclusively at offense in next years draft. They need to fix this team one unit at a time, with a definitive vision as to the identity of each unit. That D now becomes an aggressive athletic 3-4 D that has no real weakness to it.

The Bills have enough so that with the right moves, and the right management, there is no reason the team can't be competitve/ very good within the next two years. However, the same can be said for most other teams as well.

  12. But the fact is everyone with a brain that saw Brian Orakpo fall to 11 thought he would and should be the pick.

I remember watching the draft and feeling a sense of dread when they panned to Maybin on the phone just prior to the Bills picking. I think the Bills were so surprised that Orakpo had fallen to them that they didn't know what to do. They probably hadn't even scouted him since they assumed he would be off the board by the time the Bills picked.

They picked Maybin with the hopes that his game would be similar to Dwight Freeney's. But if you look at the measurables coming out of college, Maybin was far from Dwight Freeney. Freeney, considered too small coming out, played at least 20 pounds bigger than Maybin. He had more success than Maybin. Also, he blew Maybin away at the combine. The same could be said for most of the top tier D-ends in this years draft.

It's not as if Maybin was a workout warrior, he wasn't. He was fools gold, a player who took advantage of an injury to rise from obscurity and have a nice season, racking up good numbers against sub-par opposition. How that translates to the number 11 pick is a complete mystery. I wouldn't be surprised if Maybin never gets a sack in the NFL.

  13. Yeah, I think you are safe with that one, and I agree.

Now that we have Brohm, I am almost certain we will not go QB in first 2 rounds unless some top QB drops unexpectedly. Brohm is essentially a #1 overall type prospect we got for cheap. If Brohm was in this years draft, most think he would be the top QB taken this year.

We almsot certainly go OL and DL in first 2 rounds...maybe LB somewhere in there too

#1 Overall prospects do not languish on practice squads... behind 7th rounders. The fact that some scouts may have speculated several years ago that this guy could be a top ten pick does not make this kid Peyton Manning.

I think this kid is an interesting prospect that the coaching staff... whomever they may be... should pay close attention to next summer. However, at this point, to even consider him as a starter next year is ludicrous.

  14. The y only showed it once because it was so awful. Jaguar fell (or was pushed) into his knee while he was upright and engaged in blocking. Knee buckled inward while foot stayed on the ground. Trust us: Season over.

Probably career ender. Unbelievable. This franchise is tortured. If I'm Mike Shanahan, I stay as far away from this cursed city as possible.

  15. Wow, that bus out of Buffalo is gonna be pretty full I'm thinking (hoping actually)

    Poz

    Whitner

    Lynch

    T.O.

    Parrish

    Edwards

    Fitzpatrick

    Denney

    Kelsay

Who else is on your wish list?

I think Poz is an actual NFL talent. Maybe not a starter, but some guy that can contribute to a team. Lynch is an inmature wannabe thug that exemplifies all thats wrong with professional athletes. Edwards... idk. I don't think it hurts to keep him around and let him fight for a job with a new coach. At this point it seems like a long shot, but I think it's conceivable he could still be a player in this league.

No one else on that list is even worthy of consideration.
