  1. Just got this email today. Woohoo! One down, let's hope others follow.

    Dear Valued Newegg Customer,

As a result of recent changes in New York State tax law requiring certain out-of-state retailers to collect and remit sales taxes to the State of New York, we began collecting applicable sales tax for all orders shipped to New York addresses starting June 1, 2008.

After careful review and consideration, we are pleased to inform you that we have stopped collecting New York sales tax, effective August 21, 2008. This decision was driven by your direct and candid feedback and our continued commitment to you as our valued customers.

We appreciate your patience as we worked through this process, and would like to reiterate our commitment in offering our customers the broadest product selection, competitive pricing, fastest shipping, and award-winning customer service.

We look forward to continuing to provide you with the premier online shopping experience for all of your IT and consumer electronics needs.

    Sincerely,

    Bernard Luthi

    Newegg.com

    Company Spokesperson and

    Vice President of Merchandising

Disclaimer: While Newegg no longer charges sales tax to its New York customers effective August 21, 2008, you may still have an obligation to pay New York State use tax on your purchases. Newegg cannot offer you any tax advice, so please refer to applicable law if you have any questions about use tax. Nothing in this email shall be deemed to approve the validity of any New York State law, including but not limited to section 1101(b)(8)(vi) of the New York State Tax Law, which purports to require Newegg to collect and remit New York State sales tax on its sales to residents of that state.

  2. Oh, just get off of your high-horse there Buford.

I was simply replying to the comment that she made about Oz being the US' best ally. (I actually thought that that was out of place, in an Olympics thread.)

In case you didn't know... we Kiwis and the Aussies love to rip on each other. No harm.

    Geez

    Yawn

  3. "And another little known fact...Australia is the USAs most loyal ally. Having joined them in every war and conflict since the late 19th century."

Oh yeah... and the Kiwis were smart enough to not believe the WMD hype about Iraq.

(how's that little venture turning out?)

Wow, that was a pointless addition to this thread.

  4. My girlfriend and I just got our first house as well. The backyard is full of clover. Given the Texas weather, there really isn't a "winter season", as cincy suggests. Can we spray it now to kill it and try to grow grass?

Wait a month or two. Trying to grow new grass in summer Texas heat isn't a good idea, you'll need to water the hell out of it. Seed in the fall, the roots will have 7-8 months to establish.

  5. Thanks for your advice. I love photography and it is one of my favorite hobbies. Food and photography go great with my favorite passion - travel! I have the Canon G7 and love it- although I have outgrown it in some aspects. I agree with you the lens is the most important part. Astronomy is another hobby of mine and the 40D hooks up to a scope nice. I figure the 40D will be my camera the next 15 years. Do you think the 17/55 is that much better then the 17-40? I appreciate all your advice and will most definitely consider it

I really can't say, I've never used either one of those specific lenses. Even though I don't think they are generally as good, I am a big fan of Sigma. I think they make quality lenses for the price and if that is all your budget allows right now then I wouldn't hesitate to give it a shot. Go read user and pro reviews of those lenses if you can find them, there is generally a lot of good online feedback for lenses.

The 70-300 that Fez linked to would be a great lens to have in such a short length. I have a 70-300 I mainly use for sports but it has a longer body and can be a pain to use as a walk-around lens so I generally leave it at home but find myself missing great shots because of that.

If you own a 17-55mm and 70-300mm, you'll have the right lens for pretty much any shot you'll want to take. I also own a fixed 50mm which really taught me to use myself to frame the shot and not the lens.

  6. In short, yes, they tried to scam you.

This is very common amoung online camera dealers. They offer a rock bottom price, and call you with a hard upsell before they ship and many times won't ship unless you buy vastly overpriced extras. Always research stores before buying, especially these camera stores. I recommend http://www.bhphotovideo.com/. They get all of my business. They are priced middle of the road, sometimes you can find great deals but their customer service is top notch.

As for the lens, while I have a couple Sigma's and they are good lenses, I've never owned a Sigma lens that is better than a Cannon lens. They may exist, I just haven't used one. f/2.8 is better then f4 for shooting low light and getting a faster shutter speed or creating a shallower DOF, but as you found out, the price for that lens is outragous. This is a reasonable price. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/4634..._2_8_EX_DC.html You can get THIS, which I would consider a superior lens for cheaper than theya re trying to sell the Sigma on that site.\

Can I ask why you have your heart set on the 40D? Do you have a lot of photography experience? You may be better off getting the 30D as you get much more value and you can buy better lenses with the savings. The lenses make the photo, not the body. A experienced photographer can get better shots with a Rebel XT and first rate lens then a weekend warrior can get with a EOS-1Ds Mark III and budget lens.
