1. The Bills can take their time with Moulds.  If they need the cap space, they can then cut him loose.

    623812

Why take the time? Cut him now. It's not like the Bills are one player from a Super Bowl. Even so, he was there last year and he didn't produce much. The Bills need to rebuild (regrettably) and that means Moulds is not a part of the future. Let's face facts - the $10.8 cap hit for Moulds is ridiculous. Half of that can be saved when he's cut.

Cut him now and use that space to fill other huge needs - like both lines!!!!!

Here's a very good objective analysis on the Moulds situation.

  2. This post outlines the exact reason Ralph is a very rich man. He doesn't make bad deals.

    623469

Are you serious? Have you evaluated some of Ralph Wilson's decisions over the years? I guess not, because he has made so many bonehead choices over the years that he would have been fired a long time ago if he weren't the owner.

BTW, it is virtually impossible to lose money as an owner of an NFL team. Have you ever heard the expression "don't confuse brains with a bull market"?

Basically he is being given credit where no credit is due through no skill of his own.

  3. Remember though, he is a buisnessman first. The posters here would go nuts when he decides to run the bills on a budget less then the cap limit so the bills can turn a profit.

    623143

Every team in the NFL is profitable. The Bills turn a handsome profit every year. Why would that cause anyone to cut back????

  4. Ralph now getting mocked on Profootballtalk.com's photo of the day:

    ttp://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm

    622966

He got mocked pretty good on "Around the Horn" also.

Something like the Bills fans should be worried with RW in charge. Bills fans can only hope RW was just kidding when he said he was going to be more "hands on" in the direction of the team.

I believe owners should own and managers should manage and coaches should coach. When owners want to do all three: bad things happen.

  5. I still say he will be cut.  He rejected two deals with the Bills.  A clear indiction he doesn't want to play for the Bills anymore.

    621828

Objectively, how many 33 year old (by next season) receivers are worth a $10.8 million dollar cap hit?

Moulds was a great player and he may be a very good player still, but the Bills have so many holes to fill I don't see how they can justify paying over 10% of there cap money on one player who is on the downside of his career.

I am confident Marv realizes that this is a business and that the Bills cannot afford Moulds anymore.

Does Moulds think he will get that kind of money from anyone else? He won't get close!

  6. Well that makes me feel a little better than him voting "no" because it was a bad deal.  It still might be a bad one, but if the lower revenue clubs voted for it, then it might not be bad.

    621801

    Ralph didn't understand it?

After watching Ralph at the last three or four press conferences I find that hard to believe.

I think it was smart for Moulds to turn down a pay cut. He can say the Bills can afford him now with a $102 million cap.

Let's see if the Bills have the balls to cut him? I doubt it.

  7. The Bills ended up with Nate Clements and Travis Henry in the 2001 draft.

The Bills could have drafted Steve Hutchinson at number 14, but traded down.

If you could turn back time and draft again in 2001 would you take Hutchinson or would you stick with Clements and Henry?

    Just wondering.

  8. We need an impact player....period. I don't care if it's Davis, Ngata, Williams, Huff, etc, etc...We need a difference maker, and he needs to be making that difference from day one.

    620200

I think the key thing to remember is that free agency signings will happen prior to the draft.

For example, if they pick up a couple DT's as free agents then I think it is less likely they draft a DT. Sounds obvious, but let's see what happens if free agency ever begins.

I personally favor drafting the best player available and fill specific position needs by trade or free agency.

Best players available include: V Davis, M Williams, M Huff, D'Brick, Hawk

The Bills could use any of them.

  9. He has the Bills $2 million under a $92 million cap

I have the Bills $4.77 million under a $93.5 millon cap

This is AFTER Mike Williams cut and BEFORE today's cuts

Clayton may have the cap adjustments.......he's MUCH more accurate this year

    615478

Who knows what the hell the cap situation is? I honestly don't think anybody knows for sure.

    (no offense Clump-great work)

  10.

So that's your proof?  The coaching staff is not high quality...because I said so??

A few posts back, someone asked you to offer some reasons for your statement.  As I expected, you can't offer one.  I'm guessing the only reason you hate our coaching staff is because they aren't names you've heard of, and they weren't hyped by ESPN.

I don't think most people on the board are "cheerleading."  We are just giving the new staff the benefit of the doubt.  Just because we aren't jumping off the Peace Bridge with you, don't assume it's a Jauron love fest.  But there's no point in being negative now.

    PTR

    611414

Don't set up a straw man argument. I have heard of all of them. I have even heard of all the coaches who have turned down offers from the Bills. Wonder why?

I've actually looked at the coaching histories of the staff and they have less than impressive records of winning. Using win loss records is not perfect, but it is one way to evaluate the quality of someone's coaching success. Another way is to evaluate a guy like Jauron who as a defensive coordinator ran a defense that was in the bottom third of the league. For those of you who can't comprehend very well, that is a reason.

Now I have a question for all you posters who are more impressed by the gross number of posts than by anything else:

What makes you think that a collection of coaches who have been coaching for anywhere between 5-30 years and have a collective proven track record of mediocre results will all of a sudden become winning coaches in Buffalo?

What great things will they show to the Buffalo fans that they have been hiding for all these years?

I know a lot of you guys have practiced your insulting skills so I won't bother getting into a name calling contest.

Impress me with your answers as to why the Bills coaching staff is going to be great.

I'll wait for you to enlighten me why my view that they are mediocre is wrong.

  11. We're fans.  We're supposed to cheerlead.  You still haven't answered my question.

Yes, and I've challenged you to come up with some sort of concrete evidence or explanation for your assessment of a coaching staff you've never seen in action -- well?

    610781

What kind of concrete evidence would satisfy you? First of all, I HAVE seen many of them in action. Some with the Bills and most elsewhere. They have mediocre records.

Superficially, look at the track records of the coaches hired. Do you see a rich tradition of winning among them? Jauron has the best record and his is mediocre.

Let me ask you why you think the Bills coaching staff is top quality? Are you predicting a winning record in 2006?

    Please provide concrete evidence.

I think they will have a losing record in 2006. 6-10 maybe. A couple reasons:

There is no established starting QB, the OL is questionable at best, the DL is equally questionable, the coaching staff has never worked together before, the GM is learning on the job, etc.

  12. Constant Cheerleading?  Most thought 10-6 at WORST?????

How long have you been a member of TSW? Oh I thought so

    610798

OK here is your chance to start the ball rolling - what was your prediction for last year and what is your prediction for next year?

    Oh I thought so?

  13. You Think?

If there's anyone on this board that thinks the Bills will have a winning season in 2006 they're either nuts or diehard Bills fans.  The reality is the Bills will probably be 6-10 AT BEST - No Candycoating, Just reality!!

    610735

Just to clear up some miscommunication:

I think Mike Williams was a disaster, his getting cut was evidence of this mistake.

The coaching staff is not top quality. Can't anybody be honest on this board or is it constant cheerleading all the time?

If Marv was misquoted that the Bills will be very hard to turn around then I have to blame the idiot reporter.

And yes, there are many people on this board who think the Bills will have a winning season next year. Yikes.

Last year most people here were saying 10-6 at worst. I wish there was a way for last year's predictions to be posted again for all to see.

I've challenged the board to confess to their predictions for last year and mysteriously all the 10-6 optimists developed amnesia!

  14. Asked how difficult the task of turning around the Bills is, Levy said: "I don't know how many 'verys' to put in front of my answer. But it is going to be very difficult."

The Bills are facing another losing season next year and the new GM knows it.

Is it too late to heap more abuse on the mastermind of this mess; Tom Donahoe?

MW getting cut is just the latest disaster. There will be many more.

BTW, am I the only one worried about the 3rd string coaching staff (as a group) that Dick Jauron has assembled?

I see about 3 assistants as NFL caliber and the rest are mediocre looking at best.

  15. Low expectations.

Around the league, except for the eternal Bills optimists, almost nobody thinks he can turn this team around quickly.

He is set up to look good if he goes 8-8, whereas in the last couple years 8-8 would be viewed as a failure.

    Gotta love low expectations.

  16. It's a cyclical thing.

You end a terrible season, make some major changes (coach, GM, etc.) and you think that FINALLY we're on the upswing. Then you use a high draft pick on a highly touted college guy and sense that we got some good players in the later rounds and you start to feel even better.

Then you read about how hard everyone has worked this offseason, and you feel even better about the team.

Then camp comes and you hear about the great plays guys are making and how all of their hard work is paying dividends - you feel even better.

Then you get to some meaningless preseason games where the Bills beat up on teams like Pittsburgh and you feel better still.

Then week 1 finally comes and the Bills play a home game against a hapless team like Houston and win - you're already thinking playoffs.

Then you suffer a string of soul-crushing defeats to teams you should beat but just don't for whatever reason, players get hurt, and the guys that worked so hard in the offseason and looked good in camp show that they are being completely outplayed by guys on other teams - you realize again that the team has serious problems and serious work to do.

By week 8, the season is all but over, and your thoughts turn to who we should get as a new coach/GM and what to do with the high draft pick. You are deeply depressed, but feel if we could trade our top draft pick + Willis McGahee +Josh Reed away for Shaun Alexander, Walter Jones, Steve Hutchinson and Seattle's first round pick we could be a good team, especially when we get a new coach and GM. You start to feel better about the Bills.

    It happens every year...

Best post I've read in a long time.

"When all else is lost; hope remains" - especially for Bills fans.

  17. Pete Metzlaars, Ernie Warlick, Seymour, Costa, Remiersma?  I'll go with Ernie Warlick, who was on a line that led Sports Illustrated to conclude that Jack Kemp was the most protected quarterback in the history of football, and in the championship game against San Diego based on a beat up offensive line, Warlick starred as a receiver in a two tight end offense.

    602685

The Bills have NEVER had a premier or top notch TE in their history. Period.

  18. If we address our needs on the O and D lines - bet the over.

    598541

Well that's not much of a hurdle.

Fix the O line and fix the D line and fix the QB situation and fix the coaching upheaval and learn a completely new and unknown system and then maybe you reach 8 wins.

    No problem.
