1. He will sign with Dallas within 48 hours.

Parcells got Bledsoe for free. (FWIW)

Now he is going to pounce on Moulds. Parcells hopes he gets him for free too.

I think he would get Terrell Owens, but he is waiting to see if Moulds is available.

Keyshawn Johnson and TO are big headaches. I am sure Bledsoe is pulling for Moulds to be released.

Now here is a situation where Marv can earn his paycheck.

Pick up the phone and call Dallas. Trade Moulds to Dallas for a couple picks.

Time to rebuild from the draft since free agency isn't working out so great.

  2. Trade down and build the offensive line getting a center (Mangold?), guard (Spencer?) and tackle (Justice?) with the three picks in the first two rounds.

I think we can all agree it's about time we get an offensive line.

Losing Pickett is a bad omen. Signing him would lead me to believe the Bills were serious. It looks like Ralph is still pissed at the players getting too much money.

It was going to take serious bucks to get Pickett and the Bills struck out. Losing to friggin' Green Bay. It wasn't like he went to some tropical paradise. Jeez. It was all about the money.

This is the new NFL Ralph! - whether you like it or not. Too bad for the Bills fans the owner is stuck in the old NFL. Ralph is probably still steaming over the CBA. Get over it Ralph and get in the game. Slow movers get trampled.

What gives anyone confidence that Marv and company can get it done?

The cream of the free agents are gone and the Bills have gone sideways at best. The draft remains. I am not particularly confident that this year's draft will be able to patch the huge holes in this team.

Maybe my pessimism is misplaced, but I look for a looooooooong looooooooosing season.

I haven't seen any reasonable argument to convince me otherwise- unfortunately!

  3. Here's the current list of of UFA and RFA DTs in the NFL:

    UFA

    Edwards, Ron DT Buffalo

    Pope, Monsanto  DT Denver

    Dalton, Lional DT KC

    Jasper, Edward DT Oakland

    Smith, Kenny DT Oakland

    Kolodziej, Ross DT Arizona

    Jackson, Grady DT Green Bay

    Whitehead, Willie DT NO

    Woodard, Cedric DT NO

    Killings, Cedric DT Washington

    RFA

Franklin, Aubrayo DT Baltimore 5th comp

King, Kenny DT Arizona            5th comp

    Moorehead, Kindal DT Carolina 5th

Allen, Kenderick DT NY Giants Right of refusal

Players to take a look at in my opinion are:

Kindal Moorehead from Carolina (played in 15 games 23 tackles, 5 sacks, 1FF, 3 Pass Def)

Grady Jackson from GB (Played all 16 games last year, can take up space for Tripplett)

If Grady comes cheap he's worth getting to take up Sam Adams role in this defense.  He played all 16 games last year so I'm not as worried about injuries as others are.  I'd be happy to have him rotate with a solid rookie DT we get in the draft.

Moorehead has played well the past 2 seasons in Carolina and would definately be worth a 5th round.  61 tackles and 7 sacks in two seasons aren't bad stats playing behind Brentson Buckner.

That said, I'm still convinced we need to grab a DT in the draft no matter what/who we get.  However, should we sign one of those two we can afford to use the 1st rounder on the best impact player at a position we need (Ngata, Huff, maybe Hawk if we falls.)

Now that's what you call bottom feeding!!!!!!

  4. I can just see Ralph sitting next to Marv with the "Wizard" tip calculator that he borrowed from Mortie Sienfeld when trying to make offers to FAs out there.

    630999

    You got that right.

FA's are looking for the money. The Bills needed to blow his socks off with an offer so that he couldn't leave town unsigned. There are no realistic FA's out there who could improve the Bills at DT at this point. Ugh!

Green Bay apparently came up with the dough and the Bills probably thought they could pick him up with some hot wings and soda.

I am not writing off the entire off season until the new season starts, but it ain't looking promising.

The final kick in the balls will be when they announce Moulds is staying with a $10.85 million dollar cap hit for 2006.

  5. i know alot of you are probably ignore this and/or tell me to shut it, and who cares but you should care.

these foreign manufactures are slowing killing the north american middle class. sure they try to convince you that these vehicles are built here, by american workers and they are bringing jobs but wait, where is all that profit ending up?

anyway i'm sorry for the mini-rant, but it's little things like this that seem minor but they slowly change public perception.

and when our automakers have all gone bankrupt and we are all working for foriegn companys we'll wonder, how did we get here? what happened?

Which is better for America: a Toyota made in Kentucky or a GM made in Mexico/Canada?

    Answer:A Toyota

The foreign manufacturers are not killing the middle class BTW.

  6. Free Agent Visitor: Ryan Pickett

    DT Ryan Pickett

    6-2 | 310 | 6 Years | 2005 Team: St. Louis Rams

    CAREER NOTES:

2005: Led all NFL defensive linemen with 65 tackles, including two sacks.

No he didn't lead all DL's in tackles in 2005.

Who is responsible for these stats? Anyone over at BB.com care about the facts?

As an example, Aaron Schobel had more than him. (71)

    Here are Pickett's stats

http://www.nfl.com/teams/stats/STL (scroll down to individual defense)

  7. He is 6-4 and 320 lbs. He'll maul all day long. He is what the Bills are looking for in interior linemen.

    628594

Deja vu? - I heard the same things about Bennie Anderson. Yikes! Plus they have to give up a 6th rounder to sign him.

If the Bills are picking up Arizona castoffs I am a little worried. AZ couldn't run the ball.

Honestly, I don't know if he can play. Let's hope so.

  8. Bills | Team scheduled to meet with R. Pickett

    Mon, 13 Mar 2006 06:01:52 -0800

PackersNews.com reports free agent DT Ryan Pickett (Rams) is scheduled to meet with the Buffalo Bills starting Monday, March 13.

Today's Monday - maybe the airport sighting was true

    627247

One great thing about Marv Levy is his personality and charm. (unlike Smiling Tom Donahoe) He is such a friendly guy that I believe he can persuade most FA's he has in for a visit that Buffalo is the place for them.

With Levy and DL coach Kollar from the Rams, I believe the Bills will sign Pickett.

Of course, it goes without saying that they will have to overpay him.

  10. This is a stupid thread question to begin with, let me start off by saying that.

How many years will it take for some of you to realize that the draft is a crap shoot, and the majority of the players drafted in the first round end up being mediocre or bust.

    626259

How is this a stupid thread question?

"It is conceivable given recent developments that one of the big 3 QB prospects is available at #8. If so, should the Bills draft one of them?

Personally, I would hope they were there and give the Bills a chance to trade down and get a couple more draft picks on top of a premium lineman with the top pick."

Failing to understand a hypothetical question is stupid. The possibility exists that a top rated QB may be there at #8. Evaluating the future success of the top pick is a completely different question. The question pertained to the propriety of drafting a QB or doing something else.

I favor doing something else (i.e. trading down if possible) but I hope a QB is on the board to give the Bills some leverage at least.

  11. It is conceivable given recent developments that one of the big 3 QB prospects is available at #8. If so, should the Bills draft one of them?

Personally, I would hope they were there and give the Bills a chance to trade down and get a couple more draft picks on top of a premium lineman with the top pick.

If NO signs Brees this could happen. What would you do with the #8 pick in this situation?

  12. I don't see Ngata falling to them even if we don't take him.  I'm pretty sure that St. Louis will grap him up at Eleven.  They love him around here. I agree with the comment about Bunkley having a "higher cieling" than Ngata and wouldn't mind trading down to pick up another second.

    626025

They picked up Fat Ted so I don't see them drafting Ngata either. I agree with you about trading down a couple and hopefully getting Bunkley plus another pick.

Stl Bills - what do you think of the Rams signings? They look sweet to me.

  13. huh?

    625986

Here's what I wish the Bills FA signings looked like:

the Rams have added defensive tackle La'Roi Glover, Wil Witherspoon and safety Corey Chavous to their defense.

    Nice pick-ups for the Rams.

It takes some blue chippers to make a difference (i.e. Cornelius Bennett, Bryce Paup, Takeo Spikes)

I can't exactly say Robert Royal fits into the blue chipper category. But who knows?

  14. It's virtually impossible to trade Moulds. In order to trade Moulds, you would have to find a team that is willing to give up a draft choice or player just to have the luxury of paying Eric Moulds 7 million this season and 7 million next season in cash and on your cap for his salary/roster bonus.

    625998

    Excellent points.

Which begs the question: If nobody else is willing to take on a 33 yr old WR with a monster contract , then why are the Bills keeping him (so far)?

It doesn't make sense to keep him IMHO.

  15. This is a valid point...I would only counter to say that cutting moulds after next season results in a dead cap hit of only 1.6 mil.  We already have 9 mil coming off the books in dead cap space next year.  I dont think we should be too concerned with freeing up more space for next year.

IMO the real winners this offseason are going to be the teams who dont get into bidding wars and wait for next season or the season after.  There are simply too many teams with too much money and too many holes and not enough players to fill them.  Supply and Demand.

    625824

Unfortunately for Buffalo, the Bills seem to overpay somewhat to attract free agents. As such, the Bills need as much free cap space as possible.

Moulds is like any veteran who is looking to maximize his pay as his career nears an end. I'm not blaming him per se. Although if he was so interested in the team, he would take a pay cut.

As a business and team rebuilding strategy, I feel it would be best for the Bills future to remove Moulds salary burden from the team as soon as possible.

The team needs to move on without Moulds. No malice intended.

  16. I probably wouldn't sign any big name/money FAs this offseason,  but that money might very well be useful next year.  Remember,  that dead money comes off the cap in 07 if he's released or traded now.

    625676

Finally the voice of reason speaks up. Well said.

The team is rebuilding. If you honestly believe Moulds will see the playoffs with Buffalo next year then there's nothing anybody can say to convince you that cutting Moulds is the smart move.

Brandon has it right - it's about next year's cap space. Moulds will also want a multi-year deal. Even if it is structured to be cap friendly up front, the cap hit will be pushed into the future long after he is gone. What's smart about that? Those were the kind of deals that got John Butler in trouble and why the Bills suffered for many years thereafter.

Moulds skills are declining with age. The stats back it up. The paradigm for handling vets like Moulds was typified by New England. You cut or trade the overpriced vets as their skills decline (i.e Milloy, Law,etc.) and you rebuild and renew your team consistently year by year.

Hanging on to overpriced vets for sentimental reasons is a formula for losers.

Sorry if this is redundant, but I hadn't seen the contract details posted yet.

I guess Joe Gibbs didn't exactly dump TE Royal.

[Gibbs is confident the team -- once under the cap -- will be able to re-sign safety Ryan Clark and tight end Robert Royal. Both will be unrestricted free agents.

"What we're hoping is that we're the best place for them. It's a tough situation because what happens with your free agents, you think they fit in at a certain salary level, and they have other ideas. Sometimes you get forced into letting them look. Hopefully in our case, they want to be with us." ]

The fact that Gibbs was hoping to re-sign Royal was encouraging. I am not sure he presents much of an upgrade over Campbell, but that remains to be seen.

Time for some positive news on the nuts and bolts of the O-line.
