  1. Definitely true, but those "Bickering Bills" were also supremely talented. You can't compare Kelly, Thurman, and Reed in his prime to Edwards, Lynch, and a still effective but past his prime guy in Owens.

The Bills could very well go 7-9 again, and it wouldn't be a reflection necessarily on Jauron's ability to manage egos as much as it would be a statement that A) the Bills still aren't that talented, and B) Jauron hasn't proven to be a good coach, big egos on his team or not.

  2. Yeah, impossible to judge strength of schedule 6 months before the season starts for a ton of reasons.

Realistically, is Chad Pennington going to be as good as he was last year? Thomas Jones? Kris Jenkins?

The Bills have a lot of "x-factors," but so does almost every team in the league. It's unlikely, but what if Schobel returns to form and they can grab a good playmaking LB in the draft who's capable of starting right away? Then that defense all of a sudden looks quite solid.

New Orleans at home shouldn't scare people...they can't stop anybody, and as much as I like Greer a ton, he's not a good fit for that defense. They generally suck on the road as well. Why is that an assumed loss by anybody? Not to mention we have no idea what time of year a pass happy offense will be coming to Orchard Park.

Tampa Bay is going to be a contender for the #1 overall pick. They'll be horrible...lost a ton of solid veterans, not to mention possibly the best D-coordinator in the league...and they were overachievers to begin with.

Houston is another team with a dangerous offense that can't stop anybody. Not to mention they traded a very good backup in Rosenfels (yeah, he gets mocked for his fumbles against Indy, but he's also very good at what he does) despite having one of the most injury-prone starters in the league.

Talent-wise, Miami and the Jets don't scare me at all.

We're Bills fans, we get false hope dumped on us just about every off-season. But it's fun! At least we have something to look forward to now...I'm not prepared to say they're still going to suck next year...let's let it play out. One of these years they have to be decent, even if it's on accident.

  3. Your link goes to Bob Matthews' column, not Felser's.

So, wait. Matthews leads his column with something SOMEBODY ELSE WROTE?!? And merely lists the players, without commenting on any of them? Of course, since I don't think he's been in the press box at a Bills game in 20 years, maybe he doesn't recognize some of the names.

D&C management got rid of their best writer, Scott Pitoniak, and this guy still has a job? Really? Unf^%$&ingbelievable. Better buy a few more rolls of stamps before the price goes up, Mr. Matthews, so you can keep mailing it in.

Yeah, that's par for the course for that joke of a "journalist." All he ever does is just comment on what other sports writers have to say basically. I love how every year he buys a bunch of NFL season preview magazines, adds up all of their predictions and then writes a column based on everyone else's opinions combined.

When I lived in Rochester, I could have swore the first 30 minutes of his terrible radio show was opening up the sports page of the D&C and just reading it on the air.

You can also tell the man has a severe gambling problem and probably hasn't been laid since the original Woodstock.

  4. It's a need, just not their biggest one and shouldn't be their top priority IMO.

They need help at virtually every position on the field except RB (depending on how long Lynch is out), OT, and CB (when they lose Greer you could possibly say they need help here too). Arguably they're OK at defensive tackle too. Again, arguably.

Agreed that it's not their biggest problem in terms of winning games. But it's going to sell more tickets than signing Joe Dickbag to play left guard, or Jerious McSucks to be their next OLB.

  5. I don't know, I'm no scout...but watching on TV you can still tell that he's soft- he struggles to get off the line if the CB gets in his face. Steve Smith is small too, but he'll slap a guy in the face then make his cut to get open. With Edwards they don't exactly take 7 step drops giving Parrish time to get into the open field.

They do a lot of things wrong with Roscoe- he doesn't play enough on 1st and 2nd downs to make a difference, and they very rarely put him in motion to get him into the clear. Seems like every time they throw the guy a slip screen it's telegraphed...like a base set on 1st down with Roscoe and Evans instead of Reed and Evans...hmm...you think that's a tipoff that they want Parrish to get the ball? Maybe if they mixed things up a little more offensively it would work.

But ultimately I think he's just a gimmick player...his straight line speed is pretty good by Buffalo WR standards, but it's not great, so he's not a huge deep threat (and he can't win a jump ball).

I like Roscoe, but I see no "superstar" in him. He's kind of the epitome of the Bills. Small and quick, but not really much of a "football player."

  6. Maybe. I don't know, I'm no expert on the Cowboys...I live in San Antonio, though, and they can basically charge whatever the hell they want for tickets and still fill whatever stadium they're playing in.

Obviously Jones doesn't mind a circus, but he didn't bring Pacman Jones and Owens in there to sell tickets or jerseys, because they can do that anyway. He really wants to win, he just doesn't have the patience or knowhow (seemingly) to do it.

  7. Holt is not a good fit for the Bills- he goes deep, or he catches a 5 yard slant. He's a good player, don't get me wrong...just not a good compliment to Evans.

The Bills need a receiver that can get open 10-20 yards downfield, not necessarily run a skinny post or a quick slant over the middle. They have a great deep threat, they have capable possession guys...they need an intermediate threat.

  8. Really don't understand why everyone rags on WGR so much...except for that douche Colin Cowherd, I usually find their lineup pretty interesting. Morning show is a little vanilla, yeah, but it's really not that bad.

Now flame away and tell me how stupid I am for finding it humorous when Schopp treats idiots like sh-- in the afternoon.

  9. Uhh..yeah. It doesn't matter what the compensation was. Whether it was a 7th rounder in 2025 or a first round pick this March, they released a guy that another team would have traded for. They didn't touch all of their bases here.

It's pretty simple. You release a player that has trade value, no matter how small or large it is, it's inept management of an asset.

Darwin Walker, John McCargo, Derrick Dockery- three botched trades in 3 years. This is a trend and there's no excuse for it.

  10. Harrison is one of my all-time favorite players, but the guy is shot.

If he wants to make money at this stage, I'm sure one stupid team would throw a nice signing bonus at him. But if he wants to pad his legacy, he'd do whatever he could to stay there. Hall of Fame QB, Pro Bowler on the other side of the field to take attention away from him, dome, fast track, everything.

He and Manning get by on chemistry alone these days...nobody is afraid of Harrison running 4 year slants and diving to the turf after he catches the ball.

Manning/Harrison used to be a symbiotic relationship...not anymore.

  11. I love how people like Gruden and Billick are clamored for simply because they won a SB as a head coach. How many coaches have led two different franchises to championships?

It's one thing to want a guy like Shanahan because he won a couple of Super Bowls and, as an offensive specialist, at least led Denver teams with good offenses the past decade or so.

But Gruden's ring is as a product of a fortunate matchup in the Super Bowl being his ex-team, an Eagles team that excelled at the art of choke, and MONTE KIFFIN.

Seriously, I'd like to know where Gruden's Bucs and Billick's Ravens (both alleged offensive gurus) ranked in the league in terms of offensive during their reigns as head coach.

  12. He's a better option to re-sign than McGee (didn't say he's a better player, I think they're very close).

It's annoying as hell though...the Bills throw stupid extensions at guys like Denney, Kelsay, etc, yet find themselves in a position to lose a good player like Greer for nothing. How much do you think it would have taken to extend Greer in the middle of 2007? Not a lot...and if it cost them 3 million a year to keep a very good nickle CB around, so be it...beats the hell out of having to take one in the first round every year.

Where's the foresight? The Butler and Kyle Williams extensions were probably pretty wise...and considering what Greer was making back in 2007, I'm sure he would have signed just about anything to get a 5 million dollar signing bonus thrown at him.

  13. Blah blah blah...it's just your typical off-season lip-service.

The Bills haven't utilized a FB recently because their o-line blows at run blocking. Fullback is obviously useless if he doesn't have a crease to turn into a hole with one block.

With this mediocre run-blocking line, they're better off using an extra WR to spread the field than going with a FB IMO.

    It's a wasted roster spot.

  14. I'm on board with the keep Greer, deal McGee people.

I don't know if Greer is better, but they're very close to being equals IMO. Greer is younger, bigger, and after McGee hits free agency next year, most likely cheaper as well.

What happens if they ignore Greer, let him walk, and then McGee bolts via free agency next year? If it's an uncapped year like a lot of people are speculating, he won't sign the franchise tender the Bills would give him. If they don't give him the franchise tender, well, he's gone seeing as how it's an uncapped year. McGee would be an idiot to sign a contract extension right now.

Gotta know how to manage your assets- at best, McGee is SLIGHTLY better than Greer, and that's arguable. But, my guess is we just let Greer go, McGee follows suit, and it's back to drafting corners in the first round to play a defensive system that corners aren't even valued that highly in.

  15. Not the greatest I've ever seen, but it's nice to see some people throw Steve Young's name into the mix. He got thrown into a sh-- situation early in his career. Completely underappreciated player.

The most efficient QB ever based on the rating system, which doesn't even account for how great of a scrambler he was (he had more rushing TDs than Cunningham or Elway). He was still playing at an extremely high level when the concussions ended his career. His stats don't do him justice- he wasn't even a full-time starter in the league until he was 30 years old.

Yeah, he only won the one Championship...but had he been the starter instead of Montana in '88 and '89, chances are they still win one of those Super Bowls. Maybe the 1990 NFC Championship game goes to the Niners, not the Giants if Young played that whole game. He had the misfortune of running into the Dallas buzz saw in the prime of his career.

Definitely a guy that deserves to be mentioned with guys like Elway, Marino, Favre, and Manning (and probably well above a couple of them)...
