  1. No hang-up here (and thanks for the insight about the role of descrptive statistics in inferential analyses). As a fellow Bills fan, I appreciate your efforts to predict the results of the draft (just like the others that appear here) even though, if we are really honest about it, there are far too many known and unknown variables to insert into your statistical analysis, given your sample size. It is an interesting approach to what is, essentially, a crap-shoot. My objection to your post had far less to do with your mis-categorization of standard deviation (or z - scores for that matter) than to its condescending nature. It is what, in 30+ years of teaching this content, I have railed against, i.e., trying to impress others with our knowedge(?) of statistical analyses, and why it is superior to anyone else's "best guess." It remains an imprecise art, at best. Does this constitute an intelligent response by your definition?

  2. What's wrong with 8 and 6? They are true...

Have to agree. Let's let our three "quarterbacks with potential" fight it out in training camp next year while we build a better, or at least a more experienced, offensive line. One may just be the answer (though I doubt it will be Fitz). Top draft picks would be better spent on linemen and linebackers.

  3. Solid post.

While the rest of he board is ready to write off the team after a 1 point loss to a team where Cris Carter or Tom Jackson said "they could hang 70 on them tonight" I think we did ok.

I'm much more positive going into next week. If it takes an act of god, some fluke plays, and the best KR of last year having a terrible bone headed play to lose to the top ranked Pats, I'd take that any day.

O line looked very good and came to play. The offense moved the ball-despite the checkdowns. I liked the flow of the game. I liked the pressure that we had on Brady for 3 quarters.

I think we go from "will we win 5 games?" to "do we have a shot at the playoffs?"

A very rational post which, admittedly, is hard to do about now. I was especially impressed with the middle of the offensive line. Hangartner is not Fowler/Preston and the rookies appear to be give us some run blocking, finally. We will get better. And, you can't blame Dick for this one. We were not outcoached this time, for once. Take away one bone-headed decision by McKelvin and we would be 1-0.

  4. I'd LOVE to know how you acquired this information, especially since the D+C is part of the nationwide Gannett chain, not under private ownership. Also, Matthews doesn't even cover games, other than the columns written from Rochester.

    Lori,

He got you this time! Read the D&C article and then read his comments again. :wallbash::unsure:

  5. Following McKelvins first INT, he was chest beating, strutting, and posturing towards the sidelines like he just made the play of the year that preserved the superbowl victory. I'm thinking, "Jesus, you did your job. Swell. Good for you. Act like you've been there before. Now go sit down".

Am I just an old stick in the mud, or do you think his reaction is a little over the top? I mean, c'mon, it's a friggin preseason game already. Get over yourself McLovin'.

Have to agree - a bit much. He can learn from Lee Evans - classy.

  6. Someone called Carucci on the postgame show and asked why Gaddis was playing DT, when Manalac was calling the plays as the MLB on the third team.

Not like it's the first time two players have ever worn the same number in the preseason. In fact, Ashlee Palmer and Marvin Philip were both listed with 61 on this year's original Buffalo News roster, and Nick Hennessey and Garrison Sanborn shared 69.

(Yes, I believe there is a rule forbidding them to be on the field at the same time.)

    No rumors, please.

  7. I guess I wasn't clear. Why was Tasker talking like there would be a chance the Jaguars would get another play? Even in the best case scenario for them, if the lateral were legal and the runner was ruled down by contact, the clock should keep running! So how would there be any possibility of the Jags getting a play?

I'm with you. There are three possibilities:

    1. The bills recover a fumble (initial ruling) and take a knee. End of game.

    2. It was a forward lateral. 10 seconds off clock and end of game (the final ruling).

    3. It is not a forward lateral. Jaguars are tackled in the field of play with no time outs. Unless the officials call time (for a turnover), time runs out before they can run another play. Why should an official's mistake (see #1) reversed in a re-play have given them time for another play?

However you cut it, game should be over.

  8. As plenty of other people have pointed out, POSLUSZNY HIMSELF stated that he could NOT have played at the end of the year... he was just so anxious to get back, he overstated his health.

What about (the forgotten man) Mario Haggan - available in Week 4, as I recall?

  9. Here's a quote from the description of the third day:

"Defensive work again had linebackers working on aligning themselves properly before the snap and reacting to pre-snap ***** and motion. Defensive backs worked on their ball skills and defensive linemen continued their work on getting off the ball. They also worked on stripping the ball from a receiver after the catch."

  10. As a father of two children with Type 1 diabetes and a board member of the local chapter of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. It is possible to get Type 1 up to the age of 40. Being a Type 1 diabetic is not as bad as it used to be, they have better and more accurate blood glucose monitors and the newer long acting insulins like Lantus and Levimer allow diabetics to lead a more normal life with only taking shots of the fast acting insulin when they need to eat. The insulin pump is another device that helps better manage blood glucose levels but these can't be worn during sporting events. Jay should be just fine with the help of his endocronologist and the team doctors.

Thank you for one of the few intelligent posts on this serious topic. I hope your children live long, healthy lives.

  11. Man am I old! (thanks for the memories.)

You are a very old Bills fan if:

    1. You have any idea who Birtho Arnold was and how much he weighed.

    2. You were concerned about how there could possibly be a need for both Tommy O'Connell and Richie Lucas at the QB position. (But Al Dorow was a good idea.)

    3. You thought that no linebacker trio could be any better better than Jacobs, Tracey, and Stratton.
