  1. I'm not particularly high on Jones, but I watched the replay of the Pats* comeback game and Jones had an outstanding day. He was consistently open, caught a bunch of balls, and was clearly open on deep routes a number of times. Gailey specifically mentioned after the game how he was a good deep threat. I wonder if he'll be better this year with some experience under his belt.

And he was another guy that fell into the in / out of being hurt in the middle/end of the year. A lot of these guys got great in game experience that can only help them going forward.

Another game to see him do well in is the Oakland game the week before - that fourth down catch was insanely hard and under-appreciated.

  2. Dear LynchMob,

    The order is correct. The Bills will draft #10, #42, #74, #105, #124, #137, #139, #169, and #199.

Morrison's role, unless I miss my guess, will be backup. Watch for at least 2 more in the draft.

I don't make the picks; the computer makes the picks for all 32 teams, using all of our positional needs (currently, LT, WR, CB and OLB43 are all set to P2, which gives us the BPA. The "Reach" is currently set at 15, which means the computer won't reach down DraftTek's BigBoard more than 15 slots. The computer will take the player with the least reach from the P2's, and if there is none, moves to P3, and so on.

I can make a GRAB for any player I want but it defeats the purpose of DraftTek, IMHO.

That order is actually incorrect per the Bills themselves:

    Per Bills

Buffalo will pick 10th in round one, 41st overall in round two (9th in the round) and 72nd overall in round three (8th in the round). Knowing the overall picks beyond round three will not be known until after compensatory picks are awarded in March. Compensatory picks begin at the end of round three.

What is known is Buffalo will pick 10th in round four, ninth in round five, eighth in round six and 10th in round seven.

I am not trying to be argumentative, but as a base the order in the entire draft for those picks are off and as such any simulation is going to be off.

I've looked on NFL.com, gbnreport and they all corroborate it.

    Draft Order

Seeing Coach Wannstedt's defenses in the past, and the way he's spoken specifically about Morrison unsolicited on Sirius and other outlets, I'm more than happy to watch and disagree on your assessment of his role in the team.

    10) Buffalo Bills - WR Michael Floyd, Notre Dame

    - This was a tough call for me. It came down to picking between Michael Floyd and Stanford's Jonathan Martin. On one hand, I know the Bills' need for a starting left tackle is great. They constantly say Chris Hairston has a ways to go to become a dependable starter, I get that. But in the case of Martin, I just don't know if he's worth the pick with a talent like Michael Floyd still on the board. Sure, receiver isn't as pressing a need as an offensive tackle, but getting a firm, number two wide receiver to compliment Stevie Johnson is critical to what the Bills can do on offense. Donald Jones, while a good blocker, just isn't getting it done. Floyd has the size, speed, strength, jumping ability and hands to be a dependable target for his quarterback. With the way Buddy Nix has shown he'll draft in the past, they'll take the best player on the board. Floyd is it in this scenario.

    41) Buffalo Bills - DE Vinny Curry, Marshall

    - This pick remains the same. Despite roping in the biggest fish in free agency in their franchise's history, defensive end remains a need. Mario Williams will assume the left defensive end spot from how Buddy Nix was talking after the fact. That means either Chris Kelsay or Shawne Merriman will assume the right defensive end, which isn't a good idea on a further-than-this-season basis. A replacement will have to be brought in to bring along and take over at that right defensive end spot for the long-term. I know that the Bills' defensive staff loves what Vinny Curry brings to the table. I continue to believe if he's on the board at 41, he'll be the Bills pick.

And priority wise, wouldn't it be better to put those positions at P3 to ensure there is no reach? From reading the site I thought that P3 meant you want a starter but you're not willing to reach for one?

  3. Link

    Round 1 - Michael Floyd,

    Round 2 - Lavonte David,

    Round 3 - Brandon Boykin,

Round 4 - Matt McCants, Joe Adams,

Round 5 - Marcus Forston, Brock Osweiler,

    Round 6 - Deangelo Peterson,

    Round 7 - Aaron Henry

Astro, I've got few questions about the picks:

    1. Are they going to fix the draft order? Buffalo has 10, 41, 72 etc before the comp picks are added to change rounds 4 and on.

    2. Are the picks what you think the Bills will do or what you want them to do?

    3. Morrison is going to the be SAM (per several interviews/reports) and Barnett the Will, does that change your drafting of David?

  4. The injuries to Bell and Wood have historically been completely different.

Wood had a guy fall into his leg and break a bone. Bell on the other hand, jams a finger and goes out for the season.

I'm sure the Bills have an eye on Wood's status, but I wouldnt consider him as often injured.

Bell had a fractured collarbone this season he tried to play on and come back early for but couldn't. Then the knee. Far from hangnails. I get Wood gets the glory around here, but Bell has done an insane job for someone who started playing football 7 years ago. I'd bet on the upside he has and re-sign him, and since they've offered and like Bryan Scott are waiting for a response I'm inclined to think the Bills agree.

  5. Buddy Nix may eliminate LOT Martin as his first round pick after his showing today ......

    OT Jonathan Martin did 20 reps @ 225 on the bench, ran a 5.33 forty-time, and had a 4.76 short-shuttle time,

It shows he is soft... out of shape for this important day... 20 reps is nothing... a 5.33 is slow as hell for a 1st round draft pick...

Buddy can do better than picking him at #10..... oh boy can he ...

He's definitely not soft. Is he a player that needs to add strength? Yes, which was known before his pro-day. He's actually in shape - he's a kid that played at 280 that's up to 305-310, so he has to (again) add strength. I don't see how soft gets thrown around here so much...

  6. Is this the perfect time to have more cash on the way with the tv deal, or what? We FINALLY have some young players that we want to try to keep, and perhaps otherwise we would not have been able to do so. The money and cap increase will give us more flexibility than we would have had otherwise.

It's actually quite awesome that we'll have the chance to not let any FAs leave that they want, and want to honestly be here. Just a great great thing there.

  7. I was meaning to start a thread on this but I rarely start topics.

The irony of Buddy Nix is that he's often been characterized here as a hick. He's also been characterized as being asleep, and too old.

In truth, Buddy is very media savvy and this is reflected in his comments all the time.

"Believe me we are seeing the same thing you guys are seeing… "

"I keep telling you guys and you never believe me…"

"It IS harder to get free agents to Buffalo… "

And over and over… Buddy reads the papers, listens to the media, understands the frustration of Bills fans and doesn't have the pompous attitude of some NFL execs. He doesn't say thing like "if you start listening to the fans you'll be sitting with them."

Buddy obviously has his finger on the pulse regarding this team and its media and fans and he cares what we think.

Buddy Nix is steadfast in his beliefs and confident in his abilities but he does not dismiss those who care deeply about this team, nor those whose profession it is to cover this team.

One of my favorite quotes on Buddy arrived last week post Mario - Gil Brandt (the Godfather of the draft and modern scouting) was talking about him on Sirius Radio. Every pro day Brandt went to, Buddy was there scouting players. He said in reaction to that "Buddy might nap, but he never sleeps - that guy goes everywhere!"

I think because of his bluntness and honesty in general (and sense of humor) people look to make fun of him, when all he's doing is trying to make this team better. Go Fig.

  8. I more I read, hear and see about Jonathan Martin (and I have watched about 20 Stanford games he has played in although certainly did not key on him), the more I am convinced he is going to be our pick if he is there.

As much as we like run blockers seems like Chan likes the pass blocking lineman even if they can't get as nasty in the run game. If Martin was smart enough to grasp the protections in Stanford's WCO, he can handle Chan's with Fitz calling audibles!

  9. To me, Buddy says a lot of great things, and he is very straight forward. He goes after a certain kind of player, and almost all of the players he gets fit MOST of his criterion. It's extremely hard to find guys that fit all of them. Just because Hill doesn't fit one of those 6-7 things that Nix likes does not at all take him out of the running in any way.

Buddy likes, has said he likes, and has had a history of acquiring:

    Big guys

    Fast guys

Guys who played in major programs in top conferences

    High character guys

    Smart guys

Guys who played a lot of football versus one year wonders

Guys who produced on the field

If Steven Hill or anyone fits 5-6 of those 7 things, there is no way Nix is going to shy away from him in any way. Nix wants a big fast WR to make plays and that can block. Hill does that. He played at a big school against top quality teams. He seems, to me at least, to be a smart, high character guy. I have no idea if they are going to draft him, I'm sure Chan has a very good idea of what kind of player he is by his GT connections. I have a hunch they are very interested in him.

I see what you're saying Kelly, but every first and second round pick he's made for the Bills have had production behind them. The only times he strays from that are guys like Easley, albeit in later rounds. Even a Troup or an Aaron Williams had production as tacklers and run stoppers if they didn't have the glamour stats - sacks and picks. So for him to take a guy like Stephen Hill, who has less than 50 receptions career to his name would fly in the face of what he's said to date.

  10. Astro,

If it's the way you have listed and those guys are available, Buddy, especially in the first 2 rounds wants production. "If you've done it in college you'd do it here" is what he said at some point or another. Given that, I think a WR like Hill is out, because he doesn't have that production. I would say it would be a toss up between Coples, Martin, Floyd or Glenn. Personally I'd add Coples to the bunch and dare teams to run wide or throw quick passes between the "trees"

  11. Absolutely not, at least not with the #10. Remember, we just used a VERY early #2 on a corner.

Look at the jets if you will.....They are paying Revis almost as much as we will pay Mario. The results? No playoffs, and they had to extend Sanchez, a so-so qb at best, to do so.

Dick Drawn explains it better than me. In 4 or 5 wide sets, even a "shut down corner" only covers one receiver. But, today teams go with 4 or even 5 wide sets. Corners were never a good idea to build a team around. Now it makes even less sense.

As for us, we have (imho) but one credible LB on the team. That would be Barnett, who is on the wrong side of 30. And, we have an obvious need at LT. If Nix/Gailey loved Bell, he would be signed. And if GMs around the league believed in him, he would have a 75 million dollar contract.

One of the very best posters on this board (John C) hates me for it lol, but I would love to see them trade down just a few spots and draft Hightower. But Martin would make me just as happy, and Upshaw would be great as well.

    Jmo.

One problem with that logic Bill, though it cuts into another area you like - Coach Wannstedt's defense calls for maximum resource allocation to the defensive line, and as long as you can run and hit he's fine with you at linebacker. With that in mind, if they traded back and are using their biggest asset (#1 pick) they would most likely go for a lineman on defense, as they're more useful to him than any of the rookie LBs, Hightower notwithstanding.

  12. For Coach W OLBs should be between 230 and 245 pounds, able to run and cover and play well in space. Really, they're the cleanup guys so height isn't a factor (see his favorite MLB Zach Thomas) just instincts and athletic ability. The line is where the most resources money and roster wise (he typically wants a 7-9 man rotation) go.
