  1. In this article on the young QBs in the AFC East, there's this interesting quote from an NFL scout on Manuel, and the Bills in General:

Can add young coach & staff to that also.

So what do you think? Can Bills 2014 = Steelers 2004? Maybe Whaley is finishing the job Donahoe started.

I think Nix is finishing the job he tried with the 1st staff. Remember he wanted the 3-4 and mentioned such to Chan. Also, he mentioned mid-season and then after the draft he wanted to build a line and some of the defense before getting a QB and "ruining him".

Same thing happened in San Diego with their turnover roster wise. So between the two of them Nix can give Whaley a better roster as GM (eventually) than Nix himself had going in.

  2. The writer used to write for PFT, so snarky, Entertainment-Tonight non-stories will join the usual Around the League news. The writer also fails to mention how every team will have their new/rookie players wear their names taped on their helmets (from HS to the Pros) because the coach doesn't know who they are. Ah well.

I presume he wrote an article on why the 'Phins had to put a name-tag on their 8th overall, franchise QB? No?

  3. The holding (such as it was) occurred after the ball was released, which is interference. From the 5 to the 1, they were each battling each other, with Crabtree clearly pushing off. For anyone who thinks that ball was catchable, watch it again. If "catchable" mains that the greatest catch in super bowl history is made, then yes, it was catchable. Seriously, though - please. Kaepernick released the ball even before Crabtree had reached the end zone, and when Kaepernick released it Crabtree was over ten yards from where the ball actually landed (out of bounds near the right corner). The laws of physics would have to be pretty pliable for that ball to be catchable by a human.

On the Niners side, Kaepernick said that they saw the blitz and checked to a back shoulder fade. The Ravens however, also said post-game they knew that when Kaepernick tapped the back of his helmet, that was the signal for a back-shoulder fade and covered accordingly. For all of the talk of this call, very few Niners fans have admitted they got away with a killshot on Flacco a yard plus out of bounds the third down prior for Ravens.

  4. The Bills are never going to say anything other than we had an exhaustive search, it became clear quickly that Marrone was our guy, we had several talks with him, everyone agreed he was our guy and we moved quickly and forcefully to secure him. Marrone has already come out and said publicly that every single one of his hires was the guy they wanted all along. I believe it with Pettine and (maybe) Hackett. Everyone else I am not so sure about, including his cronies from Syracuse he eventually signed like Wheatley. I could easily imagine Marrone, for example, calling Pete Carmichael and offering him the job of OC, but PC saying he would prefer to stay in New Orleans, or another RB coach that for whatever reason (it doesnt have to be bad), turned down the job. .

That I get Kelly. I'm hoping this takes the edge off some of the feelings of the media re: the cloak of invisibility at OBD. Will it in truth? I doubt it.

  5. I don't understand any position other than MAYBE QB being ahead of LB.

WR? Sure, but nowhere near as needed as LB and QB.

He listed them in that order? I guess WR is a bigger problem if Nelson can't come back?

I just think it would be horrifying to go into yet another season w/o a HUGE upgrade at two LB spots and I don't know how you'd do that in the 3rd round and later. I'd actually rather suffer another year with FItz before I did that.

I would argue there are several decent upgrades at QB from FA available, which is also part of why I am willing to wait a bit in the draft for one.

Nix really should be fired if he's arguing he still needs a WR when he just traded up and skipped over QB's Wilson and Cousins to take TJ Graham, btw.

Yup that was the exact order he put them. It's weird because that part is now missing from last night's show. Verrry Twilight-Zone-y

  6. Per Nix on WGR a few minutes ago he has as his top needs - 1. Young QB, 2. WR that can play ala "Anquan Boldin, don't have to be 6'5+ but may weigh 220+ and get the ball in jump-ball situations" and 3. Two linebackers, who can "cover and run".

IMO Te'o can cover but he can't run. Damontre Moore, Dion Jordan? Those cats can move.

  7. Good, good post. I'm not as critical of Buddy because of the improvements made in other areas (i.e., the lines), but there is no question he has failed miserably with respect to QB. I have also posted numerous times I want Marrone/Hackett/Whaley to determine who is "the" QB in this draft they think can lead the team for 10 years, and then get him at #8 without regard for others labeling it a "reach." Some have assumed it will be Nassib -- I don't think Marrone is dumb enough to telegraph his moves. Perhaps it is, perhaps it isn't. But we're hoping for the same thing.

One of the things that hurts Buddy in the QB derby to me was Gailey most likely insisting Fitz was okay, and that Buddy could continue to build the other pieces of the team. By the time Buddy had a bead that wasn't accurate, wheels came off this year. When he does pick the QB this year, no doubt he'll get the right guy.

  8. No one get too upset but (GASP) Pettine typically is up in the booth, y'know, to see everything while calling plays...

    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/rex-ryan-mike-pettine-dennis-thurman-nuts-brains-behind-ny-jets-defense-article-1.962086?pgno=2

On gamedays, Thurman always stands to the right of Ryan, one of the head coach's superstitions, on the sideline. Ryan relies on Thurman's knowledge of an opponent's likely route combinations in certain situations to determine the best coverage on a given play.

"They're not always going to run the route that you anticipate, but you rely on the human factor," Thurman says. "People become creatures of habit and like to do certain things in certain situations, especially if they'd had success doing it in the past. Your preparation has to be thorough during the week. Because the information that you give Mike and Rex is crucial."

Pettine sometimes communicates with Ryan from the coaches' booth in a slightly different way:

    F--- you, Rex!

Oh, shut the f--- up, Pett!

"We've called each other every name in the book, but it never lingers," Pettine says. "There's going to be disagreements. Nobody wants a bobble head, somebody that always says, 'Oh, that's a good call.'"

  9. are you saying that Geno Smith, from WVU is a glorified RB? seriously?!

He has less than 200 yds rushing over 3 yrs.

in the last 2 seasons he passed for over 7000 yds, 55tds and only 14 ints. 4300plus yds last yr. That doesnt sound like a RB to me, stop looking at his skin, and pay attention to his play.

    QFT

  10. This is where is gets strange. The last sentence of that blog is:

That clears up some of it for me, but raises even more questions.

It seems to me that he was released before the season began for both injury and salary cap reasons. I supposed the team could argue that it was neither, because he wasn't on the sidelines injured, or they were not up against the cap. But in reality, that's exactly what happened. And it seems to me it would be very strange wording in a contract to make it guaranteed IF he got hurt.

It's possible, because of that angle, that they didn't want to risk the 4 million. It seems a bit strange. Does anyone remember a contract signed like that? I'm not saying he did, but perhaps Tim got it wrong and it should have said the 3 mil was guaranteed if he wasn't released because of injury or cap reasons. Interesting...

The release you're thinking about Kelly is like the first guy that they put in IR then waived/injured. Since he passed the physical and isn't hurt at time of cut it's not for injury. And since the Bills are under the cap and aren't cutting him to stay under (after say an extension) then it's not for cap purposes - or the old school June 1st cut designation. Because it's for skill nothing's owed. I think.

  11. http://blogs.buffalo...e-merriman.html

How the Bills spent 9.77 mill on Merriman

Merriman would've been due a base salary of $4 million for this season, with $3 million of that guaranteed if he had been released before the season began because of injury or salary-cap reasons.

So the 3 million rotoworld mentioned is guaranteed but not for skill. So they're free of it without paying him.

And cap wise, they save around 5 million all being told, so that's not bad at all.

  12. I don't think mckelvin, or whitner were victims of Gregg Williams defensive bounties. Though perhaps bell was a target! The giants injury is also an LT with a groin injury. Kind of odd injury to be targeting though. And bell was hurt a lot, if I remember correctly.

I maintain the bills game was turnovers and big plays primarily.

That makes sense, though if there were three - I would think one is Bell's "cart off" and then the other two were for big plays/turnovers...
