"The most scientific such stab at judging the Stewart crowd appears to have been carried out by CBS News, which hired Digital Design at AirPhotosLive.com to do the work. They came up with a figure of 215,000. Digital Design uses cameras on tethered balloons to take high-resolution photos of a crowd. Then they enlarge the photos and begin counting. They try to figure out the density of sample crowd areas. Then they extrapolate from there based on how far the crowd spread. You can read about how one of their estimators goes about the work here"

Sounds like a fairly reasonable method to me.

  2. But it does not help financially prudent small market teams.

That doesn't "feel" right. I don't know if there are enough data points to make a statisitcally significant argument, but I would bet large revenue teams would dominate all major sports if salary caps weren't implemented as the players unions won earlier access to free agency.

  3. Probably a half dozen matches they could have salvaged a half point somewhere along the way. Too bad, but hopefully we can get it back on our own soil in 2012.

A half-dozen matches were close. The rest were fairly decisive. The close matches were:

    a. Ses1: Cink/Kuchar v. McDowell/McIlroy - halved - well-played even match

    b. Ses2: Fowler/Furyk v Kaymer/Westwood - halved - see the Fowler situation above

    c. Ses3: Overton/Watson v. Hanson/Jimenez - 1dn - Europe squeaked out the win deservedly

    d. Ses3: Cink/Kuchar v E&F Molinari - halved - we got lucky when FM missed a 2' on #8,

    e. Ses4: Cink v McIlroy - halved - see Cink cituation above

    f. Ses4: Fowler v E. Molinari - halved - Fowler fights back to halve the match but EM didn't really do anything terrible to blow it.

So let's say d. cancels e. It still comes down to the Fowler wrong-ball situation. That blows. Can someone explain how the "loss-of-hole" was invoked so quickly yet that person couldn't have said something prior?

  4. If the US could ever figure out how to win consistently in the team matches, the Eurotrash would never win another Ryder Cup.

Yeah we really screwed the pooch in "session 3". But because it came down to a half-point, here are a couple things to think about:

    - who held out on Fowler when he was playing the wrong ball? Someone (a rules official?) immediately made the call after Fowler hit the wrong ball. So why didn't they speak up sooner? The commentator said Fowler dropped the ball twice then placed it on the cart path. Fowler should've known better but he is only 21 and this might've been the first alternate shot match he played in. And the caddie definitely should've known better. But still, who held out?

    - Cink played solidly in fighting back from 2 down after 2 and halving a match with young gun and mutch higher ranked Rory McIlroy. Now only if he didn't three-putt #15 from like 15' or miss the 2'-3' on #17. That would've been enough for the half-point

  5. --Wow was that third session a disaster....even blowing their only chance for a win on the last hole. The US needs a Brookline level performance in singles, but I can't see it happening on that course against that team.

--The US just can't figure out the greens and it's killed them all weekend.

--Mickelson sucks. Golf's equivalent of A-Rod (at least A-Rod before last years' playoffs); great when when ahead or behind by ten but in the clutch he's useless. I always hear people ripping Tiger's Rider Cup record but you never hear that Mickelson's is worse. His matches have all been over at the turn.

--Lee Westwood is the best golfer in the world right now. I hope they match up Mickelson with him tomorrow so we can just get them both out of the way.

Yeah I thought the tide was turning there for awhile and we might salvage 2-3 points. 1/2 out of six is a debacle.

    Westwood was a stud today.

  6. Those who are only casual fans of golf, remember the name Dustin Johnson (those who pay attention already know him). He's been on the cusp of greatness all year, but choked some opportunities away. I'll be looking for him to take the Ryder Cup by storm.

So far DJ and Lefty have been terrible. Monty pairs up the two worst Euros from "session 1" as a minimize the collateral damage pairing / sacrificial lambs and they still hand DJ and Lefty their arses. So much for Pavin's belief those two would be stalwarts.

Who's excited for the Ryder Cup this year?

Obviously I'm pulling for the good ole' USA but it'll be a tough test. Them damn foreigners are quite good this year.

I am - it's my second favorite international sports competition behind Olympic Hockey.
