  1. LOL good one.

Then how did Cote d'Ivoire get ranked without even existing?

Huh? Why doesn't the Ivory Coast exist?

Is this draw totally random or do they pick one of a group or the strongest teams, one out of the next strongest, etc.?

Section 3) discusses how the draw was done this year

    http://soccer.si.com/2013/12/02/rethinking-world-cup-draw-seeding/

I was pretty bummed yesterday but after a day to think about it, the group isn't as bad as initially thought.

I take nothing away from Ghana, they are a good team but they are a team the US should beat. Much of their WC pedigree has come because they beat the US twice to advance further. In 2006 (at a game I was at in Nuremburg), Ghana was gifted a penalty to win 2-1. It was an even match. In 2010, the US was extremely unlucky not to win. Despite poor player selection and tactics by Bob Bradley, the US was the better team and could have easily won had they capitalized on numerous great opportunities.

Portugal is a slightly better Mexico. They can easily be frustrated and when they do they lose their minds. Germany is class. If we played them on match day one, it would get ugly but on matchday three, they will likely be secured through. If so, it gives the US a better chance to get a point or three if the stars align.

All in all, it's 50/50 on advancing which I'd take. If they were in Group B, I'd say the chances would be 15%.

My recollection was that we were better at ball control and passing in both 2006 and 2010. So we were the more "skilled" team. However Ghana was faster and taller. They killed us in the aerial game and on speed to open balls, deflections, etc.

  2. Here's the text:

    Rule 11 Scoring

    Section 2 Touchdown

    Article 1 Touchdown Plays.
    A touchdown is scored when:

© a ball in player possession touches the pylon, provided that, after contact by an opponent, no part of the player’s body, except his hands or feet, struck the ground before the ball touched the pylon

Now - pylons are square and are placed outside the boundary lines. So today's play where EJ hit the front face of the pylon with the nose of the ball would mean the ball is out of bounds according to the laws of geometry, right?

  3. Not a fan of when they add allspice, nutmeg, cloves, fruit, whatever else. I mostly adhere to the Reinheitsgebot.

Locally I've seen some Abita, Steven's Point and Pyramid brews at the corner Consumers. Haven't tried any of their holiday releases though.

  4. We play at Oakland (and at Jax if we each finish 4th). I would love to make the trip to London for a road game. In addition, it would take away a little sting if the Bills play 7 home games (plus Toronto) and 7 road games (plus London).

I would loathe that. Since I live in the Bay Area and it's the one game I can make it too next year.

The host team tends to chose non-conference opponents (7 of 9) times. So it's not likely that Oakland or Jacksonville would choose to face Buffalo in London.

  5. Absinthe at the Old Absinthe House

    Sazerac at the Napoleon House

Antoine's for a Cafe Brulot after dark

Erin Rose for a frozen Irish Coffee (a favorite)

Deannie's Seafood on Iberville/Dauphine for Barbecue Shrimp

And there's an interesting beer tap water fountain at the Bulldog

  6. Another qualifier tonight. (On BeIN sports?????)

With USA, Guatemala & Jamaica all at 7 points, Group A is going to come down to the last game (Oct 16) no matter what happens tonight.

But a win tonight helps us to control our own destiny.

  7. Tiger would have closed out his full point on Sunday if it had mattered. Once the match ended with him in the middle of the 18th fairway he obviously didn't give a damn about the rest of the hole.

Love, Stricker and Furyk are the goats. The criticism of Tiger has been way overblown. He played very well on both Friday and Saturday afternoons in addition to being in a position to win on Sunday.

He got stomped by Colsaerts on Friday afternoon. And didn't accomplish a thing Saturday afternoon. No criticism can be overblown when the #2 ranked player in the world comes away with 0.5pts out of 4 matches.
