  1. Whatever minor controversy surrounds who is fourth: imagine if the NCAA didn't go to a 4-team playoff this year? We would've had an undefeated defending title holder on the outside while two teams with losses played for the national championship. That would've been an immensely bigger controversy.

So kudos to the NCAA for moving to a 4-team playoff. Nothing is perfect. But this is a vast improvement over prior years.

(Note: this is even coming from someone who hates Florida State)

  2. Mickelson is an !@#$ for throwing Watson under the bus at the PC after the tournament. Even worse, Watson was sitting a few seats down from Lefty. I hope he never gets sleected for the Ryder Cup again.

I dunno - I always appreciate when players speak their mind in interviews.

Plus the comments seemed fairly tame.

  3. I suggest that if the NHL, MLB, and NBA championships were only played once every four years (or were a one-game championship rather than a series) these numbers would be vastly different.

And were reformatted to appeal to nationalistic allegiances

It was a great tournament. I enjoyed it and my second favorite nation won. And now I'll forget about soccer for another four years (maybe two, since I do enjoy the Euro Cup).

That's how it started for me. I just started watching the world cup and Euro Cup @1990. Then I'd started watching the USMNT qualifying games after the 94 World Cup. Then I started following various Bundesliga teams (Bayern, Bremen, Schalke, etc) in the UEFA Champions League @1998. Finally I adopted a BPL team in 2010 - Liverpool after Fenway Sports Group bought them.

    "The World Cup rating was:

Higher than the 9.2 rating on Channel 2 for the Los Angeles Kings title clincher over the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup finals.

Higher than the 8.6 rating on Channel 7 for San Antonio's title clincher over the Miami Heat in the NBA finals.

Higher than the 9.6 rating on WUTV for the Boston Red Sox's World Series clincher over the St. Louis Cardinals.

However, it was lower than the 12.2 rating on Channel 4 for the University at Connecticut's NCAA men's basketball final victory over Kentucky.

It was nowhere near the 51.0 rating on WUTV for Seattle's Super Bowl romp over Denver. But expecting the world version of football to compete with interest in the American version on television was way too much to ask."

  5. The first one was confusing me for a bit, but now that I read through the comments, I realize that the bottom row was actually just the options given for the answer. I originally thought they were supposed to be a part of the pattern, which completely baffled me. They should have found a better way to translate this to the online quiz.

Ahh - the first one baffled me as well - for the same reason. I thought the lower row of flags were part of the pattern of flags to be solved as well.

    I got the rest correct.

Yes but which half? And black?? Do the let color blind kids in that kindergarten?

The right half is always dark on slide 2

At work, a bunch of us were watching the game on a big-screen TV. Someone observed that the ESPN caption box ran out of room to display all the German goals on the Germany side of the box.

I suggested they could just list the additional German goals on Brazil's side of the caption box, because Brazil certainly wasn't using it.

I laughed at that as well - how ESPN had to scroll the German goal times because it overwhelmed the caption space

If its fixed by region, it will be Brazil against Argentina.

If its fixed for ratings worldwide, it will be 1 South America vs 1 Europe

If its fixed for home team and worldwide, it will be Brazil vs Holland

If its not fixed, I have no effing clue!

Even if it was fixed - and I don't remember hearing of any solid accusations beyond World Cup qualifying or beyond the group stage at most - a few slanted calls from the ref cannot fix a drubbing like that
