  1. Grading a draft less than 2 years after it happened is always smart.

    - why not? To the posters point, a year ago, we were all slapping ass and high fixing with how great we had done... In the end, it'll be an average draft...made worse by the selection of EJ where we took him...

I know Russ. None of that applies to him personally or in the business world. He's not the guy you think he is.

I hope not and am sure he is a good guy even. Thats just the look and feel I have been getting. I am sure he'll do an amazing job in the business aspect of the organization, but the football side I believe is foreign to him. We need seasoned football people.

I'm with you, brother. Believe me. I'm a "win a title or it's a waste of time" kind of fan. But it takes time to get there. Considering the lack of talent that was on this roster two seasons ago compared to now, this team is going in the right direction from a team building stand point. The division is vulnerable this year, a WC birth or division title is still very much within reach for this team as it's currently constructed.

The toughest stretch of the schedule is over. The easiest part is yet to come. Wins are going to come in bunches over the next five weeks -- if they don't, then that's the time to panic.

I do recognize the talent is much better, and that is probably why I am so bothered by our coaching. If we had dynamic coaching, I think we would be in first place in the division....too much talent to play so poorly.

And yet, despite this, they are .500 and 1-1 in the division, through the toughest part of the schedule. I'm not defending the QB play, it's been a source of criticism since the off season. But you're deep into your Monday after a *pat loss, look beyond the doom and gloom and you'll feel better.

    - great, we're going to be 8-8....that's not good enough.
  5. As you both retreat to the privacy of your Gulfstream for the 2.5 hour jaunt back to Boca Raton, rest assured that you have emulated today, using your terms, the “Great Ralph Wilson” in more ways then you like: returning home after another sound a** kicking at the hands of the Patriots or “fill in the blank” using any team with a competent coaching staff and quarterback. At least Mr. Wilson, RIP, took his lumps from the S-Class version of the Patriots and not today’s rather pedestrian C-Class model, which was missing a host of starters and let’s not even think of comparing Brady’s current supporting cast to the likes of Hernandez, Randy Moss, Crystal Meth Head, etc. If I can digress a minute, can you please tell me why all the Wilson Family love? You made that family wealthier beyond their wildest dreams! He made a $25k investment on a pro football franchise based in the 11th largest MSA at the time, not exactly investing in Nigerian Commodity Futures, and you monetized this past week that trade into $1.4 billion! Believe me a more competent and well-heeled Bon Jovi Group or anybody other than that buffoon Trump and you would have received a handshake and parting best wishes from the Wilson Trustee; maybe a cheap cigar knowing Ralph! Let’s be honest, the Bills were and are one of the worst managed organizations in professional sports; the current 14 yr.+ playoff drought in today’s parity driven league is beyond statistical comprehension! If it was a business, using your parlance, it would have filed for Chapter 7 BK many moons ago, the product is simply that bad! Which brings me to the central theme of this post, fully understanding your need to be PC at the Thursday presser, but please address Jerry Sullivan’s pointed and direct question, paraphrasing, “are/when will you review the football operations of this organization?” Me and about any other Bills fan can save you consulting fees by recommending the firing of Russ Brandon, a quintessential Wilson “yes” man, or at least remove him from any input into Football Operations and flat out fire Doug Whalay, a guy that is in way over his head (see story about emailing porn during his Steeler days as the office gopher). Only in Wilson’s world can a joke like Brandon even get close to the Football Operations wheelhouse and Whalay is simply too ordinary to move the dial. The string of coaching hires, busted early round picks, over priced free agents, inability to sign draft winners, and basically BSing Bills Nation has gone on for too long and unlike politics you have a clear cut score board and record to point to in the case of these two criminals. To see them talk about EJ Manual last year as having the “it” thing, even when the FSU head coach said otherwise, and seeing these two maroons celebrate the extremely over priced Watkins trade this past May and then seeing results like today, the Charger Game, the Texans game and hopefully you start getting the picture! I am sure behind close doors these two poorly dressed individuals (their suits look like they came off the sales rack at Syms (didn’t that place close years ago?)) will blame Nix, Levy, Modrak or even Wilson, but the truth is they have been too close to “control central” at One Bills Drive for too long. But go ahead and do the due diligence thing and hire your consultant and you can buy me a drink later when he concludes in a similar fashion. Frankly, I would take an autographed picture from Kim instead; man all that money and a beautiful girl, things really aren’t fair! Best of Luck and a sincere thank you from the Pipe!

Been searching this kind of blatant honesty outside of Sullivan for a while. Look, RJW did right by WNY keeping the team there, then providing the charitable fund for the region - really, in his passing, the region still made out. It's fantastic - as a former Buffalonian, well done.

That said, I too was getting tired of seeing Brandon with his lips on Mary Wilson's a-s and an expecting him to similarly pucker up to Kim. He's one of these guys you see in business who is a survivor, not on merit, but on PR and PQ - no substance and not of courage. He never has, nor ever will hire someone who is dynamic or that might pose a threat to him. He's the reason why we have a lower tiered administration, which leads to 14 years of futility in the face of parity.

Anyway, the Pegula era is exciting because, (keeps team in WNY of course), but I believe he understands what value he brings and sees nobody as a challenge to his families authority. Let Brandon sell t-shirts and let's find a football guy to bring some hard wear home. I am hoping the consulting period moves faster than the sale...tired of waiting.

  6. Week 6 approx 26 catches for about 300 yards, and non-existent against a "true" shutdown corner. This guy isn't even close to AJ Green at this point. I don't see any play making ability downfield like you see with Green. His long stat is 30 yards.

    I hate this trade.

    - rightfully so. The occasional circus catch is great, but you don't take receivers high unless they are physical freaks. Sammy is nice, certainly 1st round worthy, but is. Not anything physically exciting. Bad trade, especially considering our shortcomings at QB.
  7.

...And yet, the Bills are currently 3-3, 1-1 in the division, with two more-than-winnable games on the horizon. This despite "middling QB play, subpar coaching," and ownership uncertainty.

You might want to rethink that bolded sentence and take a few deep breaths. Push out the negative and refocus on the reality. This team is in the hunt, now is not the time to call off the dogs.

    - no, I ment exactly what I wrote. If you can't compete with the San Diego's and New England's of the world in your own house, you're not going anywhere this year. QB - that position is a dead horse. We took a guy who was unemployed three months ago, now we are riding him to the playoffs? It's a QB driven league and he is serviceable in patches, but as a starter, simply not good enough. Everyone trumpets an elite defense, and we are...only against teams Schwartz knows well, (Bears and Lions). We underperform when the lights go on. And lastly the coaches - when Spike's comments today all but pointed the gun at the coaching staff - we were a step behind. Unprepared. Unable to respond. Where are you riding this team this year other than off the cliff?
  8. I thought the Mike Williams interest around the league was interesting...then I hear from a couple people there is interest I Frank Reich if Marrone is let go...then LaConfora reports the Reich thing today as well.

Let's face it, given our middling QB play, subpar coaching, and new ownership, there are too many distractions to really be good this year on the field. That said, the Bills are positioned to be a prime time soap opera this year... At least they aren't moving.

  9. this team is still plagued with below average QB play.

Orton Passer Rating: 20th (EJ 28th)

Orton Total QBR: 31st (EJ 33rd)

Orton is playing better than EJ, but that ain't saying much.

Orton better take advantage of the upcoming so called easier games.

Is his mediocrity a stun in revelation? Man was unemployed 3 months ago. The NFL is a QB driven league, until we gave a top 15 level talent, .500 is the best we will know... Orton us doing all he can with the limited tools he has....

  10. The real question - CAN Sammy ever live up to the expectations that come for a player who cost you two first round picks, (hopefully only one of those a high one). Seriously - if he were taken by the Browns there and was doing for them what he is doing for the Bills, it would be high fives and ass slapping all around. Because of the price we paid - he needs to be a monster to meet the expectations.

Look - I don't like the trade as I think the only position in the NFL you move up for in RD 1 (and give up a future RD1), is a QB as it is the most important, but he looks to be as good as advertised.

  11. As touched upon - it was a bad year for QB's in a year we decided we were taking one. Can't force decisions if the talent is not there. I think the report from FSU last week was legit - the FSU coach knew EJ was not starting QB material. Had he stayed at FSU, Jamesis would have been the starter last year anyway. Swing and a miss on him. I am hoping he at least can man the pine and be a diligent back up. Orton isn't the long term, but hopefully, he can man the post thru next season until we find a legit long term answer...

  12. I think the young buck has some things to learn about big internal decisions like switching QB's:

    mikerodak

Watkins: “The way he talked, the way he handles business, the way he looks at plays and breaks down defenses, it’s kinda different than EJ."

    mikerodak

Sammy Watkins on Kyle Orton today in practice: “He reads it quicker, the ball is coming out faster

Rather annoying that Rodak has the exclusivity on these quotes, but, ya know.

For Sammy, this would have been a good opportunity to take some pages out of the vets' playbooks:

    mikerodak

Mike Williams on WRs’ role in EJ benching: “We feel like we could have did more … It wasn’t our decision, but it wasn’t our actions either."

    buffalobills

@Fred22Jackson: "This isn't just about EJ. As an offense, we need to get the job done."

    MEANWHILE:

    JoeBuscaglia

Q: Kyle, why will you run this offense better than EJ?

    A: I'm not saying that I will. That's a loaded question. That's a crap question.

    - When Fred speaks, we all should listen...we just might learn something. He's truly "The Man".
