  1. I suspect he means veterans that actually saw the field regularly in their careers, you know, experienced.

Rex doesn't care about such things...he ran with Sanchise, then Gino...Neither had a minute of experience - Hell, EJ and TT are vastly more experienced at the NFL game than either of those two. Roman succeeded with an inexperienced reclamation project in Alex Smith, then Kapernick... I think an unmolded EJ or TT more to their liking out of the box...

  2. I love hindsight...

Tyrod seems a little too conceded for my taste. I agree he can scramble & run but Tuel is a better pocket passer & team player. - IMO

    Tuel is a better Passer!!!!!

This would be a great move to replace Tuel.

    ...and then some

This is a nice thing for me to see this morning! And I wouldn't relegate Tyrod to Tuel status just yet...

    This man...he gets it....

If it's to replace Tuel it's awesome. If it's to replace EJ, which I doubt, it's harebrained. Unless they keep EJ, give him an equal chance, and the Tyrod just beats him out.

not so harebrained any more is it?

Whats the worst that can happen?

    CBF

...he wins the starting job and leads the Bills to the playoffs...

  3. In sports connecting w/peers is all about performance. What did Sammy and Woods body language tell us about how they felt about EJ against San Diego and Houston last season? Remember what they said about Orton (at first). They want to win, whoever will help them do that is their guy, black, white, green, young or old.

Wow - I wonder how Elway or Payton Manning connected with their black teammates? Perhaps they made a mean soul dish? In the lockeroom - respect is won on the field, in the weightroom, etch.. The argument about race of the QB is the craziest thing I have read on this site in a long time...

  4. EJ 5th rated QB overall (behind Drew Brees, Matthew Stafford, Sam Bradford and Matt Ryan), 20/30/66.7%/11.9avg/4TD/358total/146.9 rating.

TT 30th rated QB overall, 24/31/77.4%/7.6avg/0TD/236total/98.3 rating

Meh 49th rated QB overall, 13/15/86.7%/5.5avg/0TD/83total/89.7 rating

This backs up what our eyes are seeing too. Meh is exactly that, meh... not scaring any DC's right now. In a league where games are decided by 3/4 plays, we need to start the guy who can make a couple of plays...

  5. If they name Cassel the starter, was it ever truly a QB competition? When the bullets mattered, while they all performed well, it appeared Taylor won, followed closely by EJ and lastly Cassel. Perspective being taken is who was most effective scoring and maximizing mismatches for the opposing defense. Cassel is not better than a Trent Edwards and in a league who tilts the favor towards QB's and receivers, the weak armed, habitual check down guy gives away the benefits league provides to passers these days. Next two weeks will be interesting...

  6. You have to bet the Bills. New coach, defense will be smoking, energized stadium.

Last 5 QBs to play at the Ralph:

    • 84 / 158 53% Completion Rate
    • 876 Passing Yards = 175 yards per game average
    • 1 TD
    • 7 INTs

I don't care how good Luck is, he will be running for his life all day.

Rodgers the only one of the 5 that compares to Luck was 17/42 185 0 TDs, 2 INT

Bet the money line and win extra big.

To be honest - I wouldn't touch this game or that line with anything more than $5. The game could be anything from a Bills blowout to a Colts blowout...and everything in between. This early in the season, I lean towards defensive teams, but Andrew Luck is a wild card of Manning like proportions...Don't touch this one...

They couldn't handle Carr and the Raiders without Dareus...

  7. Unless something drastic happens this week, it's (1) Cassel (2) Taylor (will wildcat) and (3) EJ (nobody offered anything significant...yet). And there is a "friendly" disagreement in the clubhouse about who should start, Cassel or TT... As a defense first guy, Rex knows how much of a pain it is to plan a defense around a mobile QB (aka Team Taylor), but the other side of the house wants something safer, (aka Team Cassel)...to the point of this thread, there doesn't appear to be a Team EJ any longer...

  8. To some extent, I blame both the players union and the NFL for allowing this. Instead of rolling out the HOF guy, (though Carter does not belong), they should roll out the Ryan Leafs, Aaron Hernandez or Lawrence Phillips type - people who had a chance, drafted higher than most, but failed via bad decisions... Make them watch 'Rand University' or the Marcus Dupree story on 30 for 30 - cautionary tales...not some buffoon like CC or Warren Sapp - two guys who got more chances than the kids watching in those seats will likely get. More draftees end up driving trucks or other blue collar work as opposed to slipping on the Gold Jacket. Let them face that reality and stop dangling the ultimate prize in front of them.

As to Carter - He doesn't belong in the Hall. Good for him that he straightened his troubled life out, but he's a poor example of leadership. He's a clown, more cliche' than substance. I would never let him be my example of what hard work yields - he was gifted a collage career and given 3rd and 4th chances in life because of his talent. Hard work is Fred Jackson, or (don't hate), Tom Brady - people who worked for their lot in the NFL.

  9. I think Bills fans generally believe the team has an excellent chance to have a top 3 defense this year. I also think fan consensus is that the Bills are unlikely to have a top 10 QB this year.

For this study, I begin with the 2001 season. I define top 10 QBs as the the top 10 highest passer ratings each season. And I am defining top 3 defenses based on yards per played allowed.

There is no perfect one stat for QB or for team defense, but those are what I chose as being fairly good.

Since the 2001 season there have been 25 teams who had a top 3 defense and did not have a top 10 QB

8 of those teams (32%) missed the playoffs.

4 of those teams (16%) lost a wild card game

3 of those teams (12%) lost a divisional playoff game

7 of those teams (28%) lost a conference championship game

2 of those teams (8%) lost the super bowl

1 of those teams (4%) won the super bowl

Clearly there is a difference between having the 11th best QB and the 32nd best QB.

But based on the arbitrary 10th ranked cut off, this century, if you have a top 3 defense you have 40% chance of advancing to the championship game, a 32% chance of finishing out of the playoffs, and a 28% chance of finishing somewhere in between.

Hey.... This is good analysis... well thought out.

  10. I don't know as there are so many conflicting reports. Here is what I am taking away from things so far. EJ had the best night last night, Taylor makes huge plays and gets sacked a lot but is really exciting, Cassel has been the most consistent (albeit not great). At the moment Cassel is probably in the lead based on the fact that he is getting the most work with the 1's. If they were all on equal footing to start camp they would all be getting equal reps there. That does not mean that the other guys can't win the battle but if the season started tomorrow Cassel would probably be under center. The other thing that I think is important is the info from Kiper's Hair the other day. He indicated that the team is gauging interest on EJ and if the season started today it would be Tyrod - Cassel - Simms. Take that for what it is worth but he has proven to have solid inside info in the past.

I think that pretty much sums up the QB battle so far.

This is interesting - from two separate sources - neither can agree who was better, EJ of TT....

Something I find interesting though, thru 4 practices and OTA's, Cassel is "Cassel" I guess is the best way to say it - he never does anything to excite, but never does anything make you panic...ideally, he would be a backup as when EJ or TT look sharp, they are much better than Cassel. The Bills just need one or the other to be consistent.

  11. Read what Rex said.

    1) TT and EJ have been relegated to the 2's & 3's because MEh is supposed to be the pro and the other 2 are in development.

    2) Defenses are normally ahead of offenses in early camp.

    that is all

    Let's also recognize:

    1) Rex is a master salesmen and not someone I would like to play poker with... Of course he is offering "reasons"

    2) Our guys are struggling on 7v7 drills...vs air - balls overthrown, underthrown, behind, etc., have nothing to do with defense

    3) In todays NFL, "developmental" QB's are named starters with regularity to bolster confidence

Insight aside, the QB position is unfortunately looking exactly like what every sports writer in America said it would - our achilles. We can pull out some modicum of comfort from what Rex or anyone in the organization is saying to the press or fans, but the smell test at SJF isn't meshing up with what Rex is saying or fans want to believe. Still exciting to see if Rex can manufacture playoffs like he did in NY with subpar QB play...Better tools here, so I am thinking yes...

  12. I've heard from sources, those same within the franchise that gave me the EJ lead and moving up for Sammy - the team is quietly trying to see what, if any interest exists for EJ - if the season started tomorrow, it's Tyrod, Cassel and SIMMs right now... Granted, it's August 2nd, but perception is reality, EJ isn't making the grade. They love the intangibles, but he is not consistent enough to be considered an NFL starter.
