  1. The people who are obsessed with drafting a quarterback early in the NFL draft are those that recognize the fact that winning franchises in the NFL have an exclusive stranglehold on the best players at the most important position in professional sports.

With a mediocre-to-below-average quarterback, you hope for a freak playoff run between years battling toward 7-9.

With an elite quarterback, you have a tantrum the one year out if 10 that you actually MISS the playoffs.

The difference is obvious to those of us who haven't lowered our standards.

Yes, but draft a quarterback early does not automatically equate to that guy being an elite quarterback.

There's only one potentially elite guy and that's Cam Newton. However by all accounts from the experts, he's a boom/bust type.

Gabbert will probably end up being a decent starter, certainly not an elite guy. The rest of the QBs in this class are backups.

So if you're talking about wanting an elite type guy, then it's Newton in the 1st round. Otherwise, forget about it.

  2. Interesting article on the criteria Bill Parcells uses to determine QB rankings. Might be a bit outdated with so many guys coming out of college early these days, but still...

    http://blogs.thescore.com/nfl/2011/03/17/how-this-drafts-quarterbacks-stack-up-using-the-parcells-rules/

    Fun fact...

Phil Simms never threw for more than 22 TDs in a season. Ryan Fitzpatrick had 23 TDs in 13 games last year.

  3. Who are you? Baghdad Bob? They were the best team in the league last year in the regular season, and by a substantial margin. Jeez.

When you have such a mediocre league, then the difference of you being the team that has Tom Brady and the other being the one that doesn't is enormous. That Pats team is no longer capable of supporting a Matt Cassell-like backup QB and still win like they did a few years ago.

They have become just like the Colts, a one man marching band. Granted that one man beats you almost every time, but both QBs are getting up there in years and who's to say that they won't choose their health over the love of the game and money in a couple of years.

  4. Was overhyped, watched him play 4 times last year and was not impressed, Dareus was the man and it took a little bit of time for the gurus to come around but knew they would once they put on the game film.

You do know that the biggest draft guru of them all Mel Kiper has Fairley rated higher, right?

I think both players will be good enough to not be considered busts. Though I think Fairley will become the "star" of the two. That being said, I could see the Bills passing on both and taking one of about five other players...Peterson, Quinn, Miller, Newton, Gabbert.

  5. You kidding me? Devin McCourty, Rob Gronkowski, Brandon Spikes, Aaron Hernandez, Patrick Chung (96 tackles, 3 INTs, 1 TD and a key blocked punt in the Jets game on special teams), Sebastion Vollmer a 4th round draft pick who's now starting for the Patriots, Brandon Tate has shown flashes, Julian Edleman, Jerod Mayo, Brandon Meriweather, Stephen Gostkowski, Logan Mankins, Nick Kaczur, Matt Cassel, Vince Wilfork, Eugene Wilson, Ty Warren, Dan Koppen, Asante Samuel, Tully Banta Cain, Richard Seymour, Matt Light.

Yeaaa...That's it. Who have they drafted? A bunch of nobodies.

I hate the Patriots and Brady as much as anybody out there but I give credit where credit is due. There's a reason why the Patriots are always one of the best teams in the league, because they just pile up draft picks like this. The Patriots and Eagles are by far the best teams at working the board, and this is why their talent level is always through the roof. We should learn from these teams. Joe Banner and Kraft have these teams in position to succeed for many years to come.

What part of "last several years" didn't you get...Richard Seymour?????...LOL

I stand by what I said, they are fading due to bad drafts and the only one who's holding them up is Brady.

  6. 1 bills fan, you like the Quinn alot. But i am correct with my pick at #3, Dareus. I have been saying this for months. You can have your Quinn as long as i get My guy who can take turn at the nose with Troupe in 3-4. Will we get either? probably not. Probably Peterson or take the risk at qb. But i remain hopeful that we address defense and against run should be the priority.

I read that the Panthers are still seriously considering 7 guys for that #1 pick. I'm sure that the Bills are in the same boat. Peterson, Quinn, Miller, Dareus, Fairley, Gabbert, Newton, Green, Jones...that's 9 players I could see the Bills seriously consider picking at #3...LOL

So in the end, it doesn't matter who we fans promote. The Bills have their plan and no bluster from any of us will change that plan.

  7. Tha pats drafted 4 instant starters in last years draft. Their top two picks made the pro bowl. The Bills are lucky to get two starters after 3 years of "developing" in one draft, let alone 1st years PBers.

Due to poor drafting, Brady is the only one holding that rickety team together. Mayo, McCournty and the two TEs, that's it, that's all they got from the gazillion draft picks that the've had over the last several years.

Yes, last year was a good draft for them, but the interior trenches of that team are fading fast. My hope is that Brady gets nicked up more and more and decides to call it an early career in a couple of years. Think about it, he probably does want a long and healthy life with Gisselle (SP?) after he's done playing. The longer these QBs go, the more decrepit they become at age 50 and above.

  8. Actually Casey Hampton is one of the best Nose Tackles in the game for Pittsburgh. Same with Wilfork in New England and Raji in Green Bay. Fans and announcers like to talk about the 'backers, but none of them get it done without studs up front. Let's forget all this talk about pass rushers at #3. That's not going to change the league's most hapless run defense. It's gotta be one of the lineman. Bowers, Dareus, or Fairley. Our team is just too small for the 3-4 as is.

Bowers is a medical risk, Dareus (over 300 LB man) self describes himself as someone who's not a workout warrior, Fairley is the only one I'd consider of the three you mentioned.

However, the Bills would be foolish to not take the pass rushing monster that Quinn will end up being. If someone asked you if you wanted Jullius Peppers or a solid run stuffing lineman, what would your answer be?

As much as you want the next Suh, he's not in this draft. Peppers is, they need to draft Robert Quinn.

  9. So, because Von Miller has integrity, and will put himself on the line when he does not have to do so, to stand with his fellow players, you think a team will be hesitant to pick him now??

Isn't that exactly the type of player you would want on your team? I would.

He's not the only guy with integrity that we can pick. Let's pick the guy who'll be a game changer at the next level and who also has integrity.

  10. Quinn will be amazing, if he plays Duke every Sunday. Ba-dum-tish

    Oh please...

    Quinn vs Castonzo

Crushes QB and forces a fumble on the second play, breaks up and almost intercepts a screen pass, on the last play he gets double teamed and still gets to the QB who throws a desperate pass which gets interception and returned to the 1 yard line.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqJrjwjf55c

    Ba-dum-tish

  11. For the life of me, I just don't get this whole Bills drafting Von Miller thing over a true NFL stud sack crazy player in waiting Robert Quinn...Lawrence Taylor, Julius Peppers, Robert Quinn

Not only does he sack the quarterback, he removes the ball from the QB's possession a lot!

Please Astrobot, tell me why Von Miller is going to be better than Robert Quinn. IMO Quinn's game transitions, Miller's doesn't.

    Quinn Quote...

“I don't really compare,” he said. “But people always tell me I'm ready to be the next Julius Peppers or DeMarcus Ware(notes). I always tell them, 'Why do I need to be the second of somebody else? Why can't I be the first Robert Quinn?' But I guess being compared to them two ain't so bad.”

Sounds like a guy who's confident he's going to be something special. It doesn't sound boastful, it sounds inevitable.

  12. or they spent time with him at the combine, and plan on inviting him to carolina, so its not imperative to have everyone show up at every top prospects pro day. could be something, could be nothing.

I'm almost glad the Bills don't have the #1 overall pick. There seems to be no clear cut guy this year. I really hope that Dareus gets picked at 1 or 2 because all this talk of people wanting him scares the heck out of me. I'd take him off the board based on the appearance of there being a lack of intelligence and maturity factor alone. At least Gabbert seems smart and is willing to do whatever it takes to succeed, unlike Marcell "I'm not a workout warrior" Dareus.

  13. BTW, I've sent this particular trade-down scenario along to DraftTek's head 'bot to be considered for one of its "What If" Mock Drafts. I think it's very plausible, especially since they want a CB and Peterson is there for the trading. Thank you!

    Astro

IMO, the Bills would be gigantic idiots if they made that trade. Wilson, Houston and Bailey are going to be NFL nobodies. The Bills need to attempt to draft an impact player at #3 or get a whole lot more draft picks than that.

  14. I am trying to figure out why everyone is looking at Darius and saying "Defensive Tackle"

Folks.....HE PLAYED DE IN A 3-4 IN COLLEGE.....the fact that he is a monster that can move inside on certain downs if needed is just a plus.

    - He is a very good runs stopper who can control the edge

    - We just released Marcus Stroud

    - LB is deep this year

If we are not going to go QB with that first pick....Darius would be a no brainer. Easily the safest pick in the draft.

I totally disagree. To me, Marcel Dareus has that "Mike Williams" air about him. He seems very immature (that's not his fault it's just my impression watching his interviews). He says that his favorite thing is to watch cartoons, he admitted that he's not a workout warrior, he can barely speak coherently.

I would much rather draft Cameron Jordan than to draft Dareus who I consider a huge risk when you have more mature young men on the board like Peterson, Green, Quinn, Miller. I just don't get the Dareus is a safe pick crowd. He's screaming bust to me. Maybe when he grows up in a few years he'll be a dominate player, but I don't see that happening for quite a while.

  15. ive seen perry fewells work first hand as the giants defensive coordinatior he is a good one...why didnt u guys keep him as head coach? wutever chan seems like he has a plan and thats good. i think they can win with andy reid its just a matter of time.

Well I lobbied for him, but the Bills obviously felt a complete overhaul in the coaching department was in order after the Jauron mess.

I loved Fewell's energy and style. He's one of those new generation of coaches like Raheem Morris (who I was also lobbying for...LOL).

This has to be Reid's last chance, after that many years it's almost a self fulfilling prophecy every year that you will lose a big game in the playoffs. Time for new blood if they disappoint yet again.

  16. Interesting that Carolina wasn't one of the early arrivals, and it looks like Tennesee is very interested, bringing thier GM, HC & OC.

Actually, I read that Carolina's head coach and GM weren't even there...LOL

Gabbert's game tape must really not be all that impressive if a team looking to draft Newton #1 overall doesn't even bother to go to his pro day.

I really hope that this dinner with him is just smoke screen stuff.

  17. you can say that reid has never won a superbowl granted this is true, and if you actually read my posts, you can see that i dont type full words because I like to save time in my posts and reply as quickly as possible. If youd like to voice your opinions about me by all means. I have already been all over eagles message boards talking about this same subject, so i wanted to mix it up and try twobillsdrive (as i said i was referred to it by buffalo_bills) to talk football about buffalo, not the eagles. Also, in a reply to Andy Reid winning a super bowl, congratulations, youve stated something that has been said over and over trust me we know, your mistake is saying the eagles wont ever win one with him....as a hardcore eagles fan says to a hardcore bills fan, there is always next year.

I said that they won't ever win won with Andy Reid, not ever at all. They need to cut bait with Reid while they're still in the mix. You guys should hire Perry Fewell as your next head coach, he's going to be a good one.

  18. Oh come on guys...granted, this dude may not be the most eloquent fellow ever to visit the board, but is he really all that bad?

I mean, he came on here, openly said he's not a Bills' fan, told us he was referred to the board, and started a ligitimate football discussion. He hasn't dissed the team, fans, organization, etc., and he's been totally respectful in his posts.

I think maybe you guys are being too hard on him.

I'm not offended in the least, so far I find him entertaining. I love the put on "concern" for our team, absolutely hilarious...LOL

If I were doing the same for Eagle fans I'd tell them that they will never win a Superbowl with Andy Reid as their head coach. He's officially become the NFC version of Marty Shottenheimer.

  19. I third that! lol....yeah, I'm thinking that Dareus is a much safer pick than Fairley! I do think that Fairly has a tad more Superstar potential, but I think he has more bust potential than anyone else in the top 10 picks except for maybe Cam Newton. I know the NFL is a big step up from College ball, but when Dareus faced tough competition he was not pushed around at all. I don't put too much stock in the combine workouts, I think the interviews can be more useful if approached in the right manner by a NFL Team.

Don't get too attached, the Bills are going to draft somebody at #3 who can formulate a sentence coherently.

  20. im not worried about getting the 3rd pick 1billsfan its a matter of what will u guys do wit it....we can all voice our opinions but buffalos fo is the ones who ultimately make this decision...kolb is a very coveted player rite now, probably the most of the qbs who have been deemed available. he may not have had a better season than fitzy, but he played 3 games and a quarter. also, he didnt get to play the likes of cincinati and miami (2 times!!). He played the falcons and he tore the !@#$ out of them

if buffalo wants to return to prominence, it wont be with fitzpatrick as the qb and yes kevin kob excelled in an offence that is gushing wit weapons but that isnt the point, he was also behind an atrocious interior line with a horrible right side. btw thx for jason peters that wuz a good trade for all of us. Im saying that kolb succeeded becuz he is very calm and smart with the football. We dont kno who is better between him and fitzy, but we all kno who has more potantial and the ability to win.

i have to go ill talk later pce bills fans

    buffalo_bills=you suck

Not worried about getting the 3rd pick????…LOL

"thank you we see the logic the bills cant wait any longer they need a franchise qb now more than eve…well in my opinion here is an actual legitimate trade…philadelphia eagles receive: buffalo 3rd overall…buffalo receives: kevin kolb, 23rd pick, 2nd rounder, and a 5th"

Dude you not only are full of you know what, you sound like a bad used car salesman. If only you'd have the gonads to admit that you hadn't even watched a Bills game last year and haven't a clue what our team needs are.

You have your answer, we think that Kolb isn't as good, and will never be as good, of a QB as Fitzpatrick is right now. Peace.

  21. like i said this is my opinion, and sure vick may not throw as many, but vicks pick numbers wont be in double digits hell also have about 600 yards rushing to go along wit about 3700 yards passing, im happy wit that any day. Also he can lead my team to the playoffs so im not here to talk smack talk eagles is for other forums, rite now its about this debate over who should be the leader for buffalo next year and i am stating that it shud be kolb. he gives the bills the best chance rite now

Sorry, but Kolb isn't a better QB than Fitzpatrick. His production is the product of the west coast offense and his TD% last year was half that of Fitzpatrick's. Then there's the huge intelligence gap between the two players. Enough already, you're not getting our #3 pick.

  22. i believe that buffalo can win in two ways wit that trade i said

1.kolb can be the franchise qb this team has been dreaming of

2.rading down may accaully help, as those players will firstly cost less and some may even amount to better players than those in the top 10. For example, at 23 jimmy smith may be available. He is a top 15 talent but becuz of character concerns he will drop. These concerns are bout the people around him, not him. Never been arrested. If he could handle himself back than, he can handle himself now. a great value at 23, could end up being better than amukamara and mayb even peterson

I just believe this may turn out to be the best scenario for this team

Dude, you've got to be kidding me!

Kevin Kolb isn't as good as you or the Eagles apparently think. Fitzpatrick made a huge leap in his performance last year. He's also a hundred times smarter than both Vick and Kolb combined. Kevin Kolb works well in the Andy Reid west coast system, that's it. You guys aren't going to get a 1st round pick from anybody for him, let alone the #3 overall!...LOL

I happy with having Fitzpatrick as our QB next year. Dude threw a perfect pass that should have won that Steeler game and he'll probably end up with more TD passes than Vick in 2011. You can keep your backup west coast QB thank you very much.

  23. interesting interview

    youtube.com/watch?v=wKidIDMI0Xk&feature=fvwrel

seems to enjoy the game, but like i was saying, might not lock himself in the gym without someones help. also doesnt read like a huge leader or especially "adult" but if he loves the game and is willing to do whats asked... i dunno....

i generally think hes a safe pick

another tide sports interview from last offseason -- just more chances to get familiar with the guy

    youtube.com/watch?v=Gu76hw3Uv30&feature=relmfu

He literally laughed at the workout warrior question, and this is the guy that some want as the #3 pick? I heard that his favorite thing to do is watch cartoons. Again #3 pick? Seriously? Dude can barely speak!

In contrast, here's a video of a Quinn interview. This sounds like a man, not a big kid like Dareus...

I think the Bills will be smart and pick a mature person like Quinn, Miller, Peterson or Green. Dareus strikes me as the defensive version of Mike Williams.
