  1. There were quite a few VT games on TV this year and I was impressed by him. He's mobile but he always makes sure to set his feet properly before he throws. I was impressed. I actually think he has more of a grip on being a true passer than Vick did when he was in Atlanta. He's determined and wants to prove himself. Don't we have an extra 4th round pick?

Another suggestion for a possible mid to late round QB pick would be Ricky Stanzi from Iowa. He has excellent size, is a good character guy, and improved every season at Iowa. Could be a steal in the 4th - 5th round.

Agreed. I think he'll go higher than you think; maybe late 3rd-early 4th. Another good option.

  2. My curveball pick is Robert Quinn. I think he's the guy who could go in the 5 to 15 range, that's quite a spread, but I don't get a true sense of who covets him. I think he's going to be a great player and he would fit the Bills scheme. I think that is my only possible shocker at #3 for the Bills.

I don't want the Bills to give up picks to trade back into Round 1 to go after a QB like Ponder. But.....if that's who they covet they should do it in reverse.....trade out of #3, draft Ponder with whatever 1st round pick they receive and then spend the extra picks on defense.

  3.

A Newton gamble with #3 overall....and it IS a gamble especially when a Fairley/Bowers/Dareus is passed over....is maximum risk/max reward.

Newton is a big gamble. Too big for this franchise given the state its in.

As a fan I have to support getting someone to help the front seven. The Bills defense has been a sieve: in 2010 #1 in the NFL in rushing allowed, #5 points allowed, #9 in total yards allowed.

  4.

    - We cannot stop the run or set the edge to save our lives

    - We used two high picks on the D line last year

And a part of me wants to keep drafting players for the front-seven until we get it right. The Bills should be nicknamed "the team that made Willie Parker famous". They haven't been able to stop the run or rush the passer reliably for YEARS.

    Having said that....

    1) I'm not a fan of Newton. I don't like the offense he played in at Auburn. Gabbert bothers me in somewhat of the same way, plus he's a Junior. But if the CBA and/or salary cap isn't changed to lower the rookie salaries, a QB (or a OT) might be one of the few offensive positions worth investing in at #3. See #2.

    2) Von Miller might be a stretch since it isn't often you see a LB go that high. His size (weight-wise) is worrysome to me. It's a true need though.

    3) If I were the Bills I'd start making googly-eyes at CB Patrick Peterson if he's there at #3 (maybe WR A.J. Green too) and try to find a trade-down partner that wants one. Heck, maybe Peterson is the pick; McKelvin is inconsistent, McGee looks old and broken-down at this point, and Florence is a UFA.

    Babble off.

  5. Costanzo is a 1st round pick---they also had him playing ALL of the offensive line positions at the Senior Bowl, so he's versatile. I was impressed with G/C John Moffitt, however his ex-college teammate Kraig Urbik might be the same guy.

  6. Not by me brother. I like this kid a lot. He just seems to be under the radar. I say grab him.

Mayock was just talking about Kaepernick on Sirius NFL. He's not going to be under the radar for long. All of the hosts have been talking a bit about him today. Consensus is that he's a bit of a project/developmental guy but with BIG upside. Mayock said his delivery was a little different but the ball comes out at a very high RPM; better athlete than Tim Tebow---might run in the 4.5's.

My analogy might be to a guy like John Skelton in last-years draft, albeit about 20 pounds lighter.

And I should add that unless he blows up (in a bad way) during the Senior Bowl game or the combine, it's my prediction that he'll probably go no later than the 3rd. Too many teams need a QB in a weak class.

  7. I think he's a great athlete, but I'll be surprised if he makes a great NFL QB. He operates almost exclusively out of the shotgun and his footwork when he throws is erratic at times. At the best he might be Jason Campbell/Vince Young and at the worst Jamarcus Russell or Ryan Leaf. It depends if he really wants to put the time in to succeed.

  8. Modrak is just the chief scout. Who actually makes the pick for Buffalo? Ralph? Sure as hell hope not!

If someone offers us a killer deal for the #3 pick, who has the power to make the deal? I don't think anyone know with this franchise.

  9. Poz was on Sirius today with Tim Ryan/Pat Kirwan and they asked him about that play. He said their LB coach today told him "that's a tough play", meaning trying to cover anyone especially Calvin Johnson running down the middle of the field. When asked what he would do differently next time, he said he'd try to get a hand on him at the snap, and then try to turn and run with him knowing that he SHOULD have safety help deep.
