  1.

Tough loss today, and it reminded me quite a bit of 1989. For those too young (or not yet born) to remember, in 1989 the Bills were a promising young (but unproven) team on the rise.

Yet, a very tough playoff loss ended that season, much the same as today. So close in both cases...

There was lots of blame to go around too in 1989 (most focused perhaps unfairly on Harmon) and pretty much everyone had an opinion on what was wrong, and how awful things were after that loss.

But the core players (along with a great coach and GM, and a franchise QB) were there then, and they are now as well. A strong off-season, stable leadership that "stayed the course", coupled with a good draft in 1990 (adding a few key players like Lodish and Parker among others) and the Bills were on their way.

So yes this loss stings -- just like it did in 1989. But I wouldn't bet against Polian having a good draft, and I'm not betting against Beane.

And I wouldn't bet against Levy to coach and build a cohesive team, and I'm certainly not betting against McD.

And yes, I wouldn't bet against Kelly to lead that team, and neither will I bet against Josh to lead ours now.

So what will happen to the Bills in 2020?

Of course no one can say, but I'll tell you for sure I'm looking forward to this off-season and this draft more than I have in many, many years.

Perhaps more than at any time since 1989....

  2. Think the Bills will absolutely light up NE on Saturday.

For the past 3 games, Bills have been feeling the pressure of making the playoffs - some tentative play, some missed opportunities, etc. -- but overall great wins and now playoff bound.

All that pressure is now gone - and Bills are also in a celebration mode, want to have a chance at the division, and also to continue to showcase their progress on the national stage, and a bit of payback from the earlier game this year.

Add all that up and I think NE is toast - and think this also becomes that truly "breakout" game for Josh -

Going to be fun to watch - Go Bills!

For you young 'uns this is a must watch video

Totally clean hit - nothing dirty, just great technique -  lead with the shoulder, wrap up, tackle.

  4. Sure--hindsight is 20-20...and it's not just the "bad" teams that missed on Mahomes....think about it--

If say the Pats thought he was as good as he now seems to be before the draft, wouldn't they have traded up to secure Brady's replacement? There were 10 teams they could have traded with to secure that pick...same is true for any other NFL team you can name.

EVERYONE in the league (save the Chiefs) missed the mark on this kid (not just the 'bad' teams).

Bottom line: predicting QB success is elusive. And the jury is still out on all of the 2018 (and 2017 for that matter) QBs, including Allen.

  5. Lots of folks lamenting the fact that the Bills passed on Mahomes...but looking back at the 2017 draft it sure seems the Bills weren't the only ones...

Recap: Mahomes was drafted 10th--looking at the players taken before him, we see:

    • Myles Garrett (Cleveland)
    • Mitchell Trubisky (Chicago)
    • Solomon Thomas (San Francisco)
    • Leonard Fournette (Jacksonville)
    • Corey Davis (Tennessee)
    • Jamal Adams (Jets)
    • Mike Williams (Chargers)
    • Christian McCaffrey (Carolina)
    • John Ross (Bengals)

Yes, certainly the Bills may have some "selection remorse" now for not taking Mahomes--but I'd argue that *any* of these teams would now gladly trade their pick for Mahomes. Sure there are some good players on the above list, but I'd bet that each and every one of them would be traded straight-up for Mahomes at this point...(one might even add the Rams to this list as they traded the fifth pick to the Titans...)

And remember as well that there were a lot of questions about Mahomes at the time--some folks felt he was a great talent, while others were sure he'd be a bust...

Just proves (yet again) that it's simply not that easy to predict success in the NFL, and particularly at the QB position.

  6. So everyone's been asking: "Which QB are the Bills interested in?"

But I'm wondering if that's too narrow a focus...

Could it be that the BIlls are ok with any of the top two, or three, or four QBs? (Or more?). Maybe they truly see a few of them as absolutely equivalent?

Would a trade to #5 (for example) be "ok" with Beane et al if either of their top 2 (or 3) QBs were there? Or even staying put at #12 if one of their top 4 "I'd be happy with any of them" were still available?

So--are there QBs the Bills would be happy with? And (maybe more importantly) are there any that they would NOT take?

(Thinking back--I'm betting anyone would be happy with Kelly, Elway or Marino...so that's kind of the idea).

Would love to hear what other folks on the board think....
