The tenure of Sean McDermott as head coach and the appropriate "leash" to allow him to lead this team to the Super Bowl has been a topic of considerable debate on this forum. While there's a consensus that he deserves additional time, the crux of the argument lies in determining the precise length of this leash.

To shed light on this, I conducted a simple data study, examining the trajectory of every NFL head coach who has led their team to the Super Bowl (not necessarily winning, just reaching the final game) over the past 40 NFL seasons.

Here is what the data revealed:

    • On average, it takes a head coach 4.2 seasons to reach his first Super Bowl.

    • Only 5 coaches in the past 40 years have made their inaugural Super Bowl appearance after 7 seasons of head coaching. This is particularly relevant as Sean McDermott is about to enter his seventh season as head coach

    • The most frequent timeline for a coach's first Super Bowl appearance is two years, closely followed by five years. This trend suggests that many coaches are capable of assembling a Super Bowl-worthy team within the first 5 years of their tenure (77% of these coaches managed to make the Super Bowl within their first 5 seasons)

NOTE: The data is across the coaches entire NFL career. For example, if a coach spent 5 years on his first team, and 4 years on his second team (before making a Super Bowl) the data tallies 9 total seasons prior to his inaugural Super Bowl appearance.

NOTE 2: The Sean McDermott line is where McDermott will be after this upcoming season.

the chart cuts off some of the names because the list is so long, but the data is there.

How long did it take Belecheat?

Publicly they continue to say he isn't for trade, but apparently privately they would be open to it under the right circumstances...allegedly.

If this report is true, what do you think the "right circumstances" would be?

I'm skeptical of all of these "reports" coming from unnamed sources, these guys have to come up with crap to stay relevant.

It really is just about unbearable.  You’d think we were still in the drought.  Some people are just miserable, or are trying to make others miserable.

And no, I’m not talking about legitimate debate over the roster, whether the WR corps is good enough or if the right moves were made to shore up the OL.

It’s the personal attacks on McDermott, the whining over national pundits, and the presumptions made by a gaggle of “hot pocket” reactionaries who read one tweet and think they know the entire story.

At least we’re only a month away from camp.

I think people are afraid of sliding back into the drought.

So NO coach can now be fired unless the team has a replacement already that is “absolutely, positively, 100% be better?”

When has that been the standard in any sport?  No coach would EVER be fired if you have to have the “absolutely, positively, 100% be better“ guarantee because you could never guarantee that.

Their are reasonable arguments one could make for McDermott not to be fired, the “absolutely, positively, 100% be better“ one is so stupid and definitely not one of them.

    - Rex Ryan who was .500 with Bills and had been to 2 AFC Championship Games with Jets.  Was a certain DC from Panthers with no HC experience a “absolutely, positively, 100% better” choice?

    - 10 Super Bowl winning coaches have later been fired.  Their replacements guaranteed to be better?

    - Of the 11 coaches who won their 1st Super Bowl in season 7 or later (where McD is now) did so after being fired from previous team.  Having already been fired were they guaranteed to be better the who they replaced?

    - 3 NBA coaches were fired in last month who had won recent NBA Championships.

Then why fire the guy you have if you don't have a guy in mind that would do better?

Amazing that they are only starting to understand this after KC and CIN showed offensive speed is not optional the past 3 seasons.

Which also make their reported interest in a big back make less sense, but that's another McBeanie non-sequitur.

We don't need a burner to pick up 3 yards

To keep it simple, NY state income tax is 10.9%, Florida is 0.  That's a pretty significant difference

I lived there for 25 years and believe me they make up for no income tax with fees for everything, vehicle registration and insurance are twice NY's, property taxes are as high there as NY,  home owners insurance is higher plus you have to pay for hurricane and flood insurance separately. For someone making seven figures it's okay, but it's not nirvana.

What's wrong with grumpy old men? I know myself that I worked hard to get to this stage of my life. 😁

I hate to say it, but I don't feel that they want guys like me as consumers anymore. I don't tune in for theatrics, politics, or the type of pop music that litters this "spectacle."

And then, we finally get to the true reason that those who are their loyal, week-in and week-out customers tune in, and then they have systems in place which allow for 1 of 7 underpaid, part-time officials to ruin our primary focus. They take the game and turn it into a mockery.

All of this thrown together, and it gives me the feeling I have better ways to waste my Sunday afternoons. Goodell & the NFL are ruining something I've loved since childhood.

And I even wanted (ever so slightly) for the Chiefs to win.

I was afraid that I was the only one.  I don't get reved up about football like I used to.

  9. I'm 77 years old and ever since the AFL and NFL merged we have experienced nothing but disappointment in the end. I along with many here thought this would be THE year. In hindsight the appointment of a rookie OC and retaining the old DC probably sealed our fate. Unfortunately with the news coming from the front office I don't have any expectations for seeing a Lombardi Trophy in Buffalo in my lifetime

I know we’ll find out tomorrow, but is anyone else thinking they are a special team? They’re absolutely loaded, have the coaches, have the do everything QB, and are hosting tomorrow. They run, they throw short, they throw deep, and I doubt the defense is going let them down an inch.

They were the last unbeaten, and beat down the Giants completely in one half of playoff football. I think they’re the team to put your money on — as everyone talks more about the other three teams. The Eagles are right in front of our faces and might make this look easy.

I think they would have killed the Bills if the two met in the super bowl.

Cook isn't going anywhere.  He has looked better as the season progressed and still has three years left on his rookie contract and has a cap friendly hit of $1.3mm in 2023.  I don't think Beane is going to keep both Singletary and Hines.  It is going to be one or the other.

Nyheim's contract is not cheap, his cap hit in 2023 is $4.79mm, and in 2024 it is $5.48

    https://overthecap.com/player/nyheim-hines/6989

Singletary is an unrestricted free agent and according to Sportrac his projected free agent contract should be right around $5.5mm annually for three years.

    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/devin-singletary-29110/market-value/

Hines is great in the return game and has stand alone value in that respect.  He has more speed than Motor and is probably a better receiving back than Motor.  We haven't seen him carry the ball much.  In his five years in the league the most carries he's had in a season was 89 in 2020.  That year he averaged 4.3 yds per carry.  His career average is 3.9 yds per carry.  The most receptions Hines had in a season was 63 in both '18 and '20.  His career average yds per reception is 7.4 yds.  Across his career, Hines catch percentage is 77%.

    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/H/HineNy00.htm

Singletary had 177 carries this year and averaged 4.6 yds per carry.  He had 38 receptions this year with an average of 7.4 yds per reception.  The most receptions he's had was 40 in the '21 season.  Across Motor's career, his catch percentage is 75%.

    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/S/SingDe00.htm

The question is which back, Motor or Hines, compliments Cooks the best?  In Cook we have a speedy / receiving back.  That is the same skill set that Hines brings to the table, plus his return skills.  Does it make sense for the offense to have their two primary RBs with essentially the same skill set?  Also, are Cook and Hines able to soak up the 170 plus carries Singletary has a season?   Cooks has looked good running the ball but has a smaller frame.  Can we expect him to hold up carrying the ball 100+ times a year in the NFL?

Singletary's projected free agent contract isn't much more than what Hines is under contract for now.  What does Beane decide to do?  The problem is I don't think Beane can afford both.  Beane's last option is to release both of them and build around Cook with new faces.

Cook plus a new face draft or otherwise.
