1. Bro,

There giving Prozac to almost anyone these days.

Moulds today, or 5 yrs ago is worth more than the prospect of Kyle Williams being the next Warren Sape at this point.  YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT KYLE WILLIAMS!!!  Who the Fu0K is he?  Eric Moulds will post later and call you out...

744125

According to Pro Football Weekly Draft Guide; Kyle Williams-The way we see it: Does not have great measurables but plays much bigger than his size and warrants comparisons to Vikings 2000 FIRST ROUND pick and currant Buccaneers DT Chris Hovan. A rolling ball of butcher knives, he will slap and push around anything in his way to get in the backfield. A throwback, old school tough guy who needs to play in a penetrating, upfield attack where he is on the move. 2006 Draft projection - 3rd round That is who Kyle Williams is - not the next Sapp ( not Sape you idiot) but the next Hovan
2. Holcomb is just plain terrible. I think 80% of Bills fans will agree with that. I don't think he should be cut because of a potential mutany, he should be cut because he sucks, and has no potential to get better. It is not like the Bills are contending for the Superbowl this year, I think most of us agree on that. We therefore do not need an aging vet, with no upside, who could possibly win a game or two if needed. Last year Tampa Bay had a much better team than the Bills do this year. They did not go for the aging no talent vet for a back up. Gruden chose three young guys to back up Brian Griese- Chris Simms, Tim Rattey, & Luke McCown. Tampa Bay found the future QB of the Bucs when Griese was injured & Sims took over. The Bucs drafted Bruce Gradkowski in the 6th round because Gruden loves his potential. If any of you cought the Jets - Bucs game Gradkowski looked like a 1st round pick (I don't think Pennington had a completion longer than 10 yards). There was speculation in todays newspaper that Rattey would soon be cut or traded ( He looked decent against the Jets - better than Pennington in my opinion). My opinion for what it is worth, is the Bills should go with Nall as a back up if they feel he has potential, or if not trade for Rattey or another young QB with potential to back up JP. There is no point in keeping Kelly on this team, the cap hit can't be that great - he was signed as a back up & the Bills have plenty of cap space.

3. OK I firmly believe NE is the most underrated team in the league, there I said it.  All I keep hearing is "OMG they lost McGinest", "watch out for Miami" and somehow they're not in the same league as Indy/Pittsburgh anymore after they suffered 5,000 injuries in their secondary the last two years and finished the season strong still.  If Denver doesn't get a couple fluke bounces in that playoff game they win the SB again last year (yes I know NE was looooooong overdue for some bad luck/calls but still I'm talking about strictly last year).  So go ahead and flame.  :(

743515

Without calls from the Refs "the tuck rule, ......" & Adam Vinateri The Pats would have been also rans.
4. I must be the only one who finds these games interesting.... I like watching guys who are drafted late or sign as free agents. The Raiders selected a WR in the seventh round named Kevin McMahan. This kid sure looked the part, and for a team that has a fair ammount of recieving prowess, he's likely to be cut. The Raiders also sign Jabari Levey, a OT out of South Carolina. Again, he passes the "eyeball test" and played very late in the game. Generally, the Eagles, even in a 16-10 loss are going to be happier about their first teams' efforts than the Raiders group. I thought Aaron Brooks looked like his New Orleans self, and the offense he ran only scored versus the Eagles 2nd string. Conversely, Andy Reid had to love the way Donovan McNabb and his first string "D" performed. I found myself watching Winston Justice real closely, as I anticipated the Bills taking him at #26 back in April. He definately has a ways to go!! For me, the game is a benchmark to start the season, and being excited about football again. Love the NFL!!

737100

I'm with you. Many thought the Bucs were going to take Justice, and thought the Bucs reached when they took guard Davin Joseph instead. It is funny if you read articles about the Bills or Bucs all you have to do is insert one name or the other. " The --- reached for this player and could have gotten him much lower than they picked him." Both were the top player at there position & who knows if either team would have gotten the player they wanted had they moved down.
5. Hmm if  $44.95 = Free then Adelphia Expanded used to pay you over $10/month to get the NFL Channel.

733344

If you are saying Adelphia charges under $35/ month that is a great deal. Down here Comcast charges over $60/ month for basic cable, and so far they do not have the NFL Network. Verizon is going to offer service soon, can't wait to see what they have to offer.
6. Everyone, please forgive my ignorance on this subject! I have been living on hand-me-down CRT TV's forever! I live in Orlando, FL, and there is no way that they will be televising any Bills games down here this year (except for maybe the Miami games, if Jax isn't playing at home that weekend). I have been asking (read:begging) my wife for at least 3 years now to let me spring for the Ticket. She gave me the go ahead, and I started poking around some more in to it. My plan was to get the Sunday Ticket package and then get rid of it after the four months. I don't really care about cable, as I have been living off of the network channels for years. I just wanna see some Buffalo Bills football! Anyway, then I found out that a year subscription is required, and if you cancel early then it is a $12.50 a month for the remainder of the contract penalty. Disappointing, but not too bad. To complicate matters, our hand-me-down pick-them-out-of-someone-elses-trash TV just crapped out.  So, I need a new TV. I figure an upgrade is long overdue, so I am trying to get the best deal on a TV in combo with the Ticket. Sounds like I am just gonna have to go with the Ticket in regular definition cuz I ain't payin any more that I am already expecting to.

Anyway, that is my story, and I am sticking to it! I appreciate everyone's assistance (though some was like reading Greek). I hope that I can figure out what to do.....SOON!

731683

If you get a HD TV ASK for the HD package to be part of the deal for free. As Fezmid said they will give it to you for free.
7. The difference being: guys have died from the heat at training camp before, so there's a certain visibility of camp activities in the heat that encourage coaches to curtail said activities if there's a risk of heat-related injuries.

But no one's died from the heat in a game yet, so who cares?  The moment someone DOES die of heat exhaustion in a game, though...then we'll see a whole new slew of regulations, including but not limited to letting the officials delay the start of an early, outdoor game if it's too hot...

732914

A couple high school kids just died down here during football practice. The key thing with heat is hydration. The Bucs, Jags, & Fins all make sure their players get plenty of Gatorade & do not push a player if they are dehydrated.
8. The Bills game in Miami can be just as hot. Are they going to cancel the game just because it's 90 degrees? I think not. They better get used to those types of conditions now so that they will be ready for it week two in Miami.

731942

I just heard an interview with a Tampa Buc yesterday, He was asked if the heat is an advantage to the Bucs early in the season. He replied "Hell yeah, I remember the Buffalo Bills came in here last year and we could see they were just dying from the heat."
9. That's stupid.  They make people pay for one channel?  Damn.

NFL Network is good during the season, and even right after leading up to the draft, but it sucks between the draft and training camp.  RICH Eisen is annoying, as are most of the Total Access hosts.  I'd love to see them upgrade to more knowledgeable hosts like Solomon Wilcots.  He may not crank out the corny, stale jokes like Eisen, but he sure knows what the heck he's talking about.

732858

I have DTV and it is free. It is still NFL football programing, even at its worst. I agree about Wilcots though, he is the best ESPN has.
10. You have a few options.

If you want an HD DVR right now, you'll get a TiVo box.  DirecTV is no longer making TiVo boxes, but the HD ones are still for sale.  Call DirecTV, ask for "Customer Retention" and you'll get a deal.  You shouldn't have to pay more than $200 for it (along with a 1 or 2 year commitment because they're subsidizing the hardware for you; leave early, and you generally have to send the hardware back or pay a penalty.  Fair enough).  This box does NOT support the new MPEG4 streams, which will be used for local HD channels (see below)

If you want to wait for DirecTV's new HD DVR, it should be here in a few months, although nothing official has been announced.

If you want a standalone DVR, you'll probably be stuck with one of the NDS DVRs, and they suck from what I've read.

You can also try to buy a DirecTV TiVo used.

The MPEG4/local HD thing is an interesting twist.  Personally, ,I'd go with an antenna, as the locals look MUCH better OTA (off the air) than they will from a satellite (or cable, for that matter).  I've done A/B comparisons from my local channels OTA vs the NYC feed, and the OTA is definately better.  The dish you need to get MPEG4 is also HUGE -- 28" x 24" if I recall.  They're making a smaller/lighter one that should be out in a few months from what I've read.

Hope that helps -- post if you have any more questions (although, being out of town for the week, answers won't be as quick as usual :w00t: )

When I bought my HDTIVO from DTV ( after reading a post of yours FEZMID - thanks for that.) I got them to agree to upgrade me for free when the local channels came out in HD. A few months ago they prvided me with a HD receiver which picks up the locals in HD. & they installed the new dish to make it work. It is much Bigger but well mounted and supported. The receiver is a lease (they charge the same for it as they do for an extra receiver so no big deal). The local channels over the sat look as good as over the air, but they don't offer the extra channels you can receive over the air, they also are affected by rain ( much more than regular sat channels ) so my opinion is if you can pick up over the air that is the way to go. They are comming out with the new HDDVR in August I was told.
11. Your problem is editing after recording. The full 3 Hrs were recorded, but you are just hiding the commercals ( they are still there ). What you want to do is pause during recording during a commercal to eliminate it & save the recording space on the disk. I bought a Philips DVD recorder a couple years ago for about $300 from Circuit City (open box special ). It just died, so I replaced it with a Magnavox from Walmart for $99 after reserching on the net. It is as good as the Philips if not better - except the remote. Has a very good owners manual & an option to record for 2.5 hrs which provides better Quality than the 3hr. You could record a game without commercials in the 2.5 hr mode and have a BETTER looking DVD.

12. Personal Opinion, all indoor HDTV antennas are horrible.  I have tried 3 without much luck.  I am very close to the broadcasting station, I just cant get a good signal.

Oh, and the one DirecTV installs...don;'t waste your time OR money.

719411

I upgraded to HDTV last year. I got a great deal (at the time) on a HDDVR. I am located about 90 miles south of Tampa and about 70 miles north of Fort Myers. DTV claims I am in the Tampa market based on Zip Code even though I am closer to Ft. Myers, so my local channels over the Sat. are from Tampa. When my new dish was installed they also installed an over air ant (for free). It is powered by the DTV receiver, so the receiver has to be on for it to work ( the only drawback). When the installer left I could only pick up the FOX channel from Tampa (ch 13) and an indipendent channel. I got up on the roof and turned the ant in the opposite direction the next day. I was able to pick up every channel from Ft. Myers and 1 from Naples Fl ( south of Ft Myers) + I get the local channels from Tampa over the sat. So... as far as wasting time & money on the DTV ant, I spent about 2 hours adjusting it, and it cost me nothing, nada, zilch, well worth it in my opinion.
13. Thanks for all of the input. I went ahead and pulled the trigger and will get it installed on Monday. They did tell me though, that not only do I have committ to DirecTV for two years, but I have to agree to the Sunday Ticket for two years as well. Since I plan on having the Sunday Ticket for as long as they offer it, this wasn't that big of a deal. Now I just have to find a decent off air antenna for local channels, and I will be all set.

720127

If you live within 70-80 miles of a city hook up the ant. You should call DTV and tell them you NEED them to throw in the ant. at no extra charge. ( They did for me ) I agree about the quality of the box though - its not there. Great picture but poor quality hard drives. I would advise you to get the protection plan - $5 / mo covers the entire system except your TV. My HDTIVO just died last night, I called in the AM they will have a new one here in 2-3 days (no charge, but you have to send the old one back - no charge, within 7 days or there is a $400 charge) They should also throw in the HD NFL package for free. Ask for this first - if they balk, tell them you will commit to the protection package ( it is well worth the $5 as the boxes are crap but expensive to replace ) The bummer about my TIVO dying is I lost all recorded content on it (as with your computer back up what is important to you ( I just bought a Magnavox DVD recorder for $99 from Walmart, It is great except for the remote. ) I procrastinated and lost a lot of stuff I wish I had recorded, oh well. Finally the reason they offered you this deal is they are comming out with a new HDDVR unit in August that will receive local channels in HD from the sat.
14. This is my 500th post so I thought I’d put together something with a little more depth than a normal run of the mill post.

I have recently read MARV LEVY: WHERE ELSE WOULD YOU RATHER BE?  His autobiography for those wondering.

There has been much discussion following his selection as Bills GM so I thought I’d supply some quotes from his book on relevant topics.

Marv Levy: “What it takes to win is simple – but it isn’t easy!”

PLAYER CHARACTER

The stay-out-late guys are easy to spot.  They show up at practice at the last minute, and they often doze through the team meetings.  A general listlessness begins to dull their performance.  They never reach their potential, and only rarely does this type of player ever mend his ways.  How do you motivate a person like this?  You don’t!  I readily admit that there is a secret involved in how to motivate NFL players.  It’s simple.  Bring only intrinsically motivated players onto your roster.  They hunger for guidance.  They’ll observe, and they’ll listen when you show them and when you tell them how they can get better.  I have found that the high lifers enjoy short careers.  As I have often told our players, “You can’t hoot with the owls at night if you want to soar with the eagles during the day.”

Bill(Polian) and I had both agreed that high character and good attitude needed to be essential ingredients in the makeup on any players brought onto the roster…Norm(Pollum) tried one last time.

“Marv, if you take my guy, I guarantee you he’ll go to the Pro Bowl.”

“Norm,” I countered, “I want to pick someone who is going to help us go to the Super Bowl!”

Note:- Marv won & the player they ended up picking was Shane Conlan.

PLAYER POTENTIAL

Big money!  For a guy with “potential.”  That is too heavy a gamble to take.

“Potential” is an imposter.  Potential has gotten more coaches fired than injuries have.  Potential has served to erode the credibility of many general managers.

YOUNG QBs

I cannot find exact quotes but Marv is clear in his belief that young QBs should be allowed to develop slowly.  A year or three learning as a backup is his ideal setup for a young QB.  Let him learn the ropes without the pressures of having to be the savior.

TEAM BUILDING

…any team that adopts the philosophy that they are “building for the future” is always building for the future.

This next point is in reference to being HC not GM but I feel is relevant.  …if you sacrifice this season in order to build for the future, what you are really doing is building for a future coach.

GENERAL MANAGERING

…a sensitive touch in dealing with the players…That is a trait that all good general managers possess.  It is a difficult quality to refine, and there are many general managers – well qualified on every other count – who do not succeed because they come to be viewed by the players as being antagonistic.  Those general managers who treat the players fairly, who tell them the truth, and who feel and display a personal interest in sincerely getting to know them individually are the GMs who succeed.

This next is in reference to being both a GM & HC.

Any coach who thinks he can handle all duties required by both of those positions is a fool.  How do I know that?  Because when I agreed to take on that additional role, I became one of those fools.

Marv was both HC & GM of the Montreal Alouettes in 1974.

DEFENSE WINS

When an outstanding offensive team meets an outstanding defensive team, the defense will win every time.

One of the reasons I believe so strongly in defense is that there is more consistency of performance.  Offenses have off days.  Freakish plays occur in the kicking game.  But defenses tend to play at the same level, game in and game out.

We were always desirous of increasing our depth and improving our talent along our defensive line…

“Offense sells tickets.  Kicking wins games.  Defense wins championships.”

717581

Great post, thanks.
15. Are you thick?  The organization was not going for any promising coordinators or guys (Sherman) with good track records who wanted more control than Ralph and Marv were prepared to grant.  The promising CO route was a complete failure for the last five years.  The organization needs stability more than anything.  The two current coordinaters will have a chance to show their stuff.  Marv is here to set a direction and stick to it.  Guess that's too hard to see.

The previous GM was a fraud and his HCs didn't know their asses from first base or the kicking tee, which may be more appropriate.

717577

Show me how Sherman is a better coach than Jauron.
