Depends largely on what his contract status is, which IDK.  Are you inheriting a cap friendly contract for a few years, or at the other extreme is this a "one year rental" at market rates?  The former - yes; the latter - no.

He has one year left on his rookie deal. So, his cap number for 2022 is amazing. But, he will want to get paid after that.

If you look at the Bills UFAs, WR, DE, and DT are all areas that need to be addressed.

With Wallace being a FA & White's injury likely push CB up the list of needs.

I just think that they go DL, again. At a minimum, it is a safe bet given their track record.

It will be interesting to see how FA changes things and what the needs are looking like closer to the draft.

  3. If the Bills lose Daboll and Dorsey, O'Brien wouldn't be a bad option at OC...

5 super bowl rings and just coached a first round pick to the best rookie season of the draft despite being viewed as firmly before 3 others.

Not saying I think he'll be good, especially given the track record of BB assistants,  but he's been very successful.

McDaniels has been with NE for all six SB titles.

And given how BB looked bad as the head coach of the Browns and people were wondering why the Jets and Patriots wanted him to be their head coach, I get why a team would talk themselves into giving McDaniels another shot.

And the Raiders love offensive minded head coaches...

On the most recent podcast, talking about the Chiefs devastating loss, Fina made some really interesting comments.

He hit on a reoccurring theme of his, which is that our DL-men do not have a "first move" and they do NOT know what move they are going to try prior to the snap.

He points out that they sort of "wiggle" left/right/left/right at the snap of the ball, as if to make the OL guess at what they will do, and then they decide what to maybe try or not try.

He points out that this is your DREAM as an offensive lineman, b/c the delay the DLmen are providing makes all the difference in the world.

Further, Fina points out that as a DL man you should DEFINITELY have a move in your mind before the snap, and then you should execute it IMMEDIATELY at the snap---that's what makes the OLman's job difficult.

He pointed out that Bruce Smith ALWAYS had a move in mind, and would do it---and that he didn't care if it got stopped several times because eventually it would work.

Fina said he doesn't know if this is just a function of the guys themselves, or if FRAZIER is teaching this crap, or what...but that that it's terrible and needs to stop.

I found those comments really interesting.

If Fina were young and on our OL now, he'd immediately be the best guy on the field.

That would seem like more of an issue with Eric Washington and Jacques Cesaire as the DL coach and the Asst DL Coach than it would be on Frazier.

Technique stuff is usually more the domain of the position coaches.

There is an out. But, it comes with $24M in dead cap space if I read the contract details correctly.

I'm not sure that Chicago wants to deal with that or not.

And I am not sure that Buffalo outbids everyone else if Mack hits the open market.

    Quote

The only good thing about Mack’s contract is that it is still tradeable. Moving Mack would reduce the Bears’ 2022 cap hit to $24 million (creating $6 million in space) and take him off the books in 2023 and 2024. Meanwhile, a team trading for Mack would only be acquiring his base salaries and roster bonuses, which are non-guaranteed. That means a team would still have to pay a relatively fair price of about $17.5 million for Mack’s services in 2022, but would not be on the hook for any money in 2023 and 2024 if it doesn't work out.

$17.5M would be fun to try and make fit within the Bills cap. It would be possible. But it would also be challenging.

Cole did have 82 catches and clearly Josh has a comfortability with him in key spots…I’d expect him to be asked to restructure rather then just be released as it isn’t easy to replace that kind of production but I highly suspect the Bills will add a speed receiver through

    free agency or the draft

With Sanders and McKenzie hitting FA and the questions around Beasley and his contract, it will be interesting to see how Beane deals with the WR depth this off season.

Here are the WR targets this season:

    Diggs 164

    Beasley 112

    Sanders 72

    Davis 63

    McKenzie 26

    Kumerow 6

I won't be surprised if they let Sanders and McKenzie walk, restructure both Diggs and Beasley to create cap space, and then they add one WR in the draft and a FA WR on a one year 'Prove It' deal.

I will be mildly surprised if Beasley is cut unless he chooses to not re-do his deal to help with the cap.

Better be a restructure then.  I love Beasley but unless he was playing injured he's lost too much athleticism. Yards after catch really really lacked.

Actually, it was his Yards Before Catch that were way down in 2021 compared to 2019 & 2020.

    Yards Before Catch Per Reception

    2019 6.7

    2020 7.5

    2021 4.7

    Yards After Catch Per Reception

    2019 4.9

    2020 4.3

    2021 3.7

  8. It seems like a pretty simple career choice for Dorsey.

Be an OC for a defensive minded head coach, get to call the offensive plays, and continue working with Josh Allen

    or

Be an OC for an offensive minded head coach, not get to call the offensive plays (most likely), and work with whomever Daboll's team's QB is...

Taking the Bills OC job should be a no-brainer if it is offered to Dorsey.

Jordan Palmer talked a lot about his work with Allen in this interview last week.

Josh has already said that he is heading back into the lab with Palmer this off season. After working last off season on being ready for the last 4 minutes of a playoff game, my guess is that it might be about building more consistency week to week.

The Bills could have, and maybe should have, been the #1 seed in the AFC this year. Making sure games like the Jacksonville and Indy games don't happen might be what they look to shore up.

Edmunds contract is only guaranteed if he is cut.  If the Bills find a trade partner he has no dead cap.

    Yup

In the Edmunds thread I talked about how they either need to extend him and reduce that cap hit for next season or find someone to take him in a trade.

If they walk him to FA with that cap number next season...

    27. Buffalo Bills

Why they're ranked here: The Bills draft class' biggest contributions came from their top three picks, as Greg Rousseau and Boogie Basham were each part of a strong defensive line rotation while Spencer Brown played 726 snaps on the offensive line. Rousseau recorded 30 pressures and 38 defensive stops, but injuries limited Basham to just 200 snaps in total. Brown played over 600 snaps at right tackle, and although he allowed just one sack, he gave up 30 pressures and accrued a 51 PFF pass-blocking grade.

How their top pick fared: Rousseau flashed the kind of athleticism and size that makes him a problem for offenses to deal with, as he was a useful part of Buffalo's defensive front. He was particularly impactful in the run game, but his pass rush was more inconsistent. He posted an eight-pressure game but also has five games in which he failed to record any pressure at all.

Best value pick: Brown became a starter on the Bills offensive line, spending most of his time at right tackle but even filling in at left tackle when needed. He recorded two elite run-blocking performances, which was his stronger area of play, and was rarely a liability in pass protection.

I think last year's class was an outcome of being too focused on Kansas City and not enough on how to make their team better.

Yes, the road to the Super Bowl in the AFC goes through KC for the foreseeable future. But, they need to focus on how to improve the Buffalo Bills for 20 games a year and not just one or two games.

So, I would lean more towards the drafting/evaluating side of things than the coaching when it comes to the guys they have drafted along the DL lately. The coaches aren't the reason they can create pressure and not get home.

  12. Dorsey is the guy for me at OC and I expect that is the move given what McD & Allen said this week.

If they go another direction at OC and bring in a guy from outside the organization, you are likely to see Dorsey and one or two other offensive coaches leaving. This team does not need to revamp their offensive staff.

If Frazier were to get a head coaching job elsewhere, my guess is that they promote from within on that side of the ball as well given how McD talked about wanting to promote from within and all the benefits that brings. DL coach Eric Washington has been a DC in the past and likely gets the job if Frazier leaves.
