I think officially, the contract isn't up until the new league year starts, so he's not a free agent.  But the Bills aren't going to be Richards about this

There is no point since the Bills season is over.

Plus, they don't want to start that petty game as they may want to hire a coach in the same position and they don't want other teams being petty with them.

The OC conversation part was really good. There were a boatload of names that they talked through.

Of the three candidates that we know about, I would rank things this way:

    1) Dorsey

    2) Bennett

    3) Martin

I think the positives of hiring an internal candidate and the guy that we know works well with Josh Allen is huge.

I have Bennett second on this list because he has more NFL coaching experience and I like that he has worked within a couple of different styles of offense between the McCarthy offense in GB and the Gruden offense with the Raiders.

If Dorsey chooses to go to the Giants and they expand the search, I would prefer to go with an OC that has a lot more experience. I think this would be my list:

    1) Jim Caldwell

    2) Doug Pederson

    3) Bill O'Brien

All three have been involved with big time NFL offenses and the experience of being an NFL head coach. If Dorsey leaves, I think you could see more offensive coaches leave than just Daboll, Johnson, and Dorsey. Having a more experienced OC that should have the ability to build a good offensive staff might be valuable.

During his tenure as the offensive coordinator, Bennett helped orchestrate an offense that finished with 96 touchdown passes since 2015, the most in the NFC and second most in the NFL during that time frame despite missing All-Pro quarterback Aaron Rodgers for nine games in 2017 due to injury. As a former running back, Bennett was able to guide his running back corps to an average of 4.41 yards per carry in the same time frame, a mark that ranked sixth in the NFL. Additionally, Bennett led an offense that ranked eighth since 2015 with a 58.8 percent conversion rate in the red zone, including a third-place finish in 2017 with a success rate of 61.9 percent.

In 2017, Bennett's offense ranked fifth in the NFL in yards per rush (4.47 avg.), despite having to shuffle the backfield due to numerous injuries, including starting RB Ty Montgomery who missed eight games. The offense also tied for sixth in the NFC with 25 touchdown passes on the season.

Guided by Bennett, Rodgers put together one of the most prolific passing seasons in club history in 2016, tossing for 4,428 yards, completing over 400 passes for a completion percentage of 65.7, while adding an NFL-high 40 touchdowns through the air to just seven interceptions. In wake of Rodgers' success under Bennett's tutelage, Nelson and WR Davante Adams combined for a league-best 26 touchdown receptions. Nelson led the league with 14 scores of his own, adding 1,257 yards receiving and 97 receptions, the fifth most in the Packers history, en route to earning the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year Award. Additionally, the offense as a whole averaged 27.0 points per game, the fourth-best mark in the league.

At the helm of the offense for the first time in 2015, Bennett emphasized ball security, as the team's 17 turnovers were the fifth fewest in club history and also ranked fourth fewest in the NFL that year. Bennett's primary focus was most apparent with Rodgers, as he posted the third-best pass interception percentage (1.4) in the NFL, throwing just seven interceptions on 572 attempts. Bennett oversaw an offense that saw its quarterback post over 30 touchdown passes (31) for the fifth time in career. Green Bay also rostered four wide receivers that notched at least 50 receptions in the same season, just the third time (1983 and 2002) the feat has been accomplished since 1940. The offense's incredibly efficient play helped guide the club to a franchise record seventh consecutive playoff berth (2009-15).

It's always a mixed bag when you hire a former HC as a coordinator, just like it's a mixed bag when you hire a former manager or supervisor as a regular worker.

Sometimes they're happy at the change - they found their previous role too mentally or emotionally taxing and are happy to go back to a previous role in which they were more comfortable, as you say.

Sometimes they aren't happy, and spend their time looking over at you thinking  "I could do a better job" (either literally or figuratively).

All I know about O'Brien is that his final years with the Texans were tremendously destructive to the organization, and I think O'Brien is generally reported to be all about O'Brien, with a very healthy ego.

O'Brien seemed to be OK as the OC for Saban at Alabama this past season.

I doubt it would be a huge issue in Buffalo.

FWIW, Ryan Fitzpatrick credits Bill O'Brien with his extended career (featuring stints as the starter for 3 additional team), saying something to the effect that his year in Houston with O'Brien (who benched him!) taught him more about Football than his previous 9 years with 4 teams.

The thing is - that was 2014, before the Texans went to the playoffs with Hoyer and Osweiler at QB, drafted DeShawn Watson in 2017, and pretty well looked set for a long stretch of contention with Watson throwing to Hopkins and with JJ Watt, Mercilus, Reader and Clowney in the front-7 and Matthieu at safety.

And while it's hard to keep a group like that together, O'Brien arguably blew it up with his ego

So I don't doubt O'Brien's football acumen and ability to design and coach a winning offense.  But I do doubt whether his ego can be reined in and focused, and I don't really want to take that chance.

BOB the head coach and BOB the OC are two different things.

If McD were to hire him as the OC, I doubt he would mess things up. Plenty of guys are way better as coordinators than they are as head coaches. O'Brien could be one of those guys.

Same issue for me as Pederson. Billy O never had an issue calling plays. He can call plays and he does at least run the E-P. But personality would be a no for me.

I think the good news is no news on Dorsey. Every day that passes where he hasn't left he is more likely to stay IMO.

After watching Man In The Arena and his working relationship with Brady, I have a lot of confidence that he could work well with Allen.

Plus, I doubt McD is going to let a new OC change the culture that much.

Hey Mr Minority Candidate….Waste your time preparing for an interview for a job you are never going to get, so we can tick this box..

It may not be a waste of time, even if Dorsey is the guy. If he interviews well, he could get a look at being the QB Coach/Passing Game Coordinator to replace Dorsey.

can we PLEASE get a pass rusher...  PLEASE.  LIKe a real Pass rusher...  I dont care how much it costs...cut someone cut 2 people... we need a freaking pass rusher..  Sorry but Hughes, Addison are not the answer.

The cap will make it challenging to add an impact pass rusher this off season.

Guys like Chandler Jones and Von Miller will likely get other offers that the Bills won't be able to match or top.

Careful with Ford. The risk with him is the weak competetion that he faced at Cincinnati. At Alabama he was 4th or 5th string and barely saw any playing time.

I am not saying that he isn't somewhat talented. I do not however think that he is worthy of a day 1 pick.

    Jmo.

He is likely a mid-round guy. I wouldn't take any RB in the 1st or 2nd round for this team.

And my post talked about how those two were later round to UDFA guys.

And when it comes to adding later round and maybe UDFA offensive weapons, two of my favorite ideas are RB Jerome Ford from Cincinnati and Ferris St QB Jared Bernhardt.

Ford started his college career at Alabama before transferring to Cincinnati. He will be one of the fastest RBs in this draft class and could add an element that the Bills don't have.

Bernhardt likely won't get drafted until the last couple of rounds, or he could go completely undrafted. He only played one year of college football after being the best player in college lacrosse two years ago. He was an option QB at DII champion Ferris State and he could be a Chris Hogan-esque athlete (Hogan played lacrosse at Penn State before playing football at Monmouth. With Beasley nearing the end and the Bills needing some YAC WRs in the mix, Bernhardt is a guy that will be a late round or UDFA roll of the dice. But, I think he would be a really intriguing option for the Bills.

  11. If they can get a potential offensive gamechanger late in the 1st, I think they have to take that guy.

Getting locked into any one or two positions is not great. While QB is off the board, passing a WR who falls due to an injury for an edge rusher or CB would not be smart.

The Bills had two former 1st rounders in the their starting offense this season. Taking an offensive playmaker (or even an OL) would not be a bad idea.
