  1. It will be interesting to see how the draft needs shift throughout early free agency.

Right now, here is kind of how I would rank the team needs.

    IOL

    IDL

    CB

    WR

    EDGE

    RB

    TE

    QB

And even though WR, RB, & TE are lower on the list, I do think that they need to try and add one more offensive weapon that other teams need to worry about as they prepare for the Bills.

    Regarding NFLPA:

This is a collectively bargained thing. So, the NFL & the NFLPA agreed to these changes to the off season. It will be interesting to see how the language changes in the next CBA as coaches and some players are not thrilled with the current language.

This doesn't get into how much contact coaches and players can have outside of OTAs and Minicamp.

Here is the whole CBA if you really want to dig into it.

And given that the Bills have the same head coach, I doubt they get a ton of leeway just because they have a new OC and some new position coaches.

Can CAR get rid of him without too much dead cap hit this year?

Seems more like a 2023 destiny to me.

    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/cap/

It looks like his $18.858M in 2022 is fully guaranteed. So, there is no cap savings to cutting him and I doubt the Bills have any interest in an $18M cap hit for a back up QB.

Any new head coach may want to make their own choice around an offensive line coach, but Brian O’Neill gave a rousing endorsement for Phil Rauscher to return after Rauscher replaced Rick Dennison following Dennison’s refusal to get vaccinated.

“I’ll play football for Phil Rauscher any day, anywhere, anytime, anyplace,” O’Neill said after the season. “I respect him as a coach. I respect him as a man in what he was able to do in the situation with the fall, with Rick Dennison and how Phil was able to come in and do an unbelievable job with our group. I’m proud of the way he coached us and proud of how he grew throughout the year. He grew with us, and we grew with him. We went through the growing pains together, and I think we’re better now than at the beginning when he first got here. I think he’s going to be an O-line coach in the NFL for a long time, and I’d love to have him coach me and our guys because I know our guys in our room feel the same way.”

If Rauscher is the next Bills OL coach, here is presser when he was elevated to the Vikings OL coach job last year. [You need to click through to YT]

This would be an interesting plot twist.

Right.  And then you get to things like the rumor the Texans will hire Josh McCown, a former QB with like NO coaching experience at any level: Really?  You can't find a better choice with more experience at ANY level?  He would be like the poster-boy opposed to the concept that owners want to win at all costs and hire the best coaching talent they can get.

Or the hiring of re-tread coaches like Doug Pederson - and he's far from the most egregious example, as he did win a Superbowl with Nick Foles and got a single amazing year out of Carson Wentz.  After which his OC was hired by the Colts as HC, his QB coach was hired by the Vikings, the team exited the playoffs early, and Wentz fell apart and now seems irreparably broken, which casts some doubt (in my mind anyway) as to who was most responsible for that, but I digress

The point is, by the time NFL teams hire relatives of former coaches, retread coaches, offensive coordinators of current playoff teams, and the occasional Whisky Tango Foxtrot? hire like McCown 1) it's pretty hard to argue that some kind of process based on coaching experience and results is going down 2) there aren't a lot of openings left to give promising, well-qualified coordinators a shot.

One thing they did say with regards to the Giants job was that the Giants defense that they didn't hire Flores because of Schoen's prior working relationship with Daboll and not because of Flores being a minority would be a strong argument.

“Everything starts with the quarterback and the fact that Josh is the most comfortable with Dorsey, the rest will all fall into place,” Dawkins said, via the team’s website. “Dorsey is a good dude. . . . If you notice every time we score, I find Dorsey and I sprint at him. It’s been a fun thing to do. It just shows that he’s relating to his players in a special way and now that we are officially his players, he’s already one step ahead.”

This was an interesting podcast that goes over legal cases and they took a look at the Flores lawsuit.

One thing that was crazy was how many NFL coaches and coordinators are related to current and former NFL coaches.

I wonder if this gets announced today.

  10. I wish the Bills could have all three helmets, all three jerseys, and all three pants available to create different looks.

That is 27 possible different helmet, jersey, and pant combinations.

I think the white helmet with the charging buffalo, red jerseys, and white pants would be a cool look.

The Red (helmet), White (jersey), and Blue (pants) combo would be cool, too.

Ah.  So was it really his play calling that sucked, or was it the lack of a QB who could execute it, and injuries to key players?

McDaniel might not have looked good without Deebo Samuel.

I don't watch Carolina so have no idea.

I have a feeling it was a little bit of injuries and a little bit of Brady being in over his head as an NFL OC that early in his coaching career.

I think being a QB coach on this staff is a good spot for him to learn and grow. Plus, if he is happy here, he could be the next OC in a few years if the offense continues to hum and Dorsey gets a head coaching job down the road.

Agree. I would also hope that Dorsey has a few original ideas to incorporate that seemed to escape Daboll from time to time last year. Such as generating better YAC, incorporating a better screen game. Different ideas to set up ALL available talent on offense to succeed.

He's got a lot to prove. Let's hope he's up to it!

I am sure that Dorsey will have his own take on things.

Plus, the personnel will change and that will likely allow him to do new things.

Josh thrived with play action...so that would be a huge plus.

That said, being he ran that offense in college doesn't mean it is something he runs now. People evolve and learn. We will see soon what Dorsey's philosophy is.

The Bills offense under Daboll and the Carolina offense when Dorsey was on the staff there likely have much bigger influences on how Dorsey will do things as OC than what he ran in college.

Should there be a sense of Urgency this offseason to address certain areas of this team in Free Agency as opposed to the Draft?

I would say that I am optimistic moving forward.

I also would like to see a little bit more Les Snead in Beane. But, I also know that due to the cap situation, we might need to wait a year for a big name impact player like Chandler Jones or Von Miller to be a realistic option.
