    Gregg Rousseau and AJ epenesa....

When we took defensive ends high... With  Gregg ,AJ and boogie

The goal was to always have the cream rise... They develop them slowly... Especially AJ... Who had a complete body transformation

They limit their snaps and location to keep them fresh.. along with the rest of the defensive line

But when you make pics like this... Sure you want quick impact... But generally there for 3 or 4 years down the line... When they are seasoned veterans in NFL strength and conditioning programs

Now... We have two massive starting ends... Tall and long... Great disruptors in the run game... Gets their hands in the passing Lanes on quick throws

AJ has honestly.. one of the best first steps and get offs in the NFL... He routinely wins off the snap

Gregg is 6'7 270 pounds... Came into the NFL extremely raw... The sky is the limit we just haven't seen it fully... He's a beast in the run and will start manhandling tackles

AJ it's probably the best hands up swatter in the NFL... You can't throw a swing pass or screen to his side... He is so long and athletic.. he's going to get another interception or two this season

This is why you draft defensive ends high... Multiple.. and let them develop

I'm going to call it now they're going to wreak havoc all year..  and we are going to have two of the biggest most tenacious D ends in the NFL

We've been waiting for this... They are going to feed off each other and disrupt quarterbacks and running backs all year

I think they both could be impactful but I need to see 8 to 10 sacks and several RB tackles for losses before I anoint either guy as a successful early round pick. Rousseau bats down some throws AJ has some nice pressures but neither makes enough game changing plays so far. I like your optimism but Oliver and a healthy Jones are our dominant lineman so far. We need sacks or strips in big spots from edge rushers.

  2. Elam’s problem is that he hasn’t been coachable and insisted on relying on his athleticism to play the position. He didn’t change his approach even after being downgraded on the depth chart. Basically, he should have been moved while he had trade value but teams hate to admit whiffing on 1st rounders. I’ll believe he can play the position effectively when I see it, until then he’s a stubborn head case.

  3. Knox didn’t deserve that contract and it’s hard to understand why they gave it to him. He’s not durable and still drops too many catchable balls. If he emerges this season with Brady carving out 12 personnel plays for him maybe they’re seeing untapped potential in him. I personally would rather have an effective blocking TE with Kincaid being a primary target and Josh having better protection.

its a mini rebuild year IMO.... We are making hard adjustments to be able to re-ante for Allens back 9

With Allen anything is possible, but it will require some significant steps up from the players around him. I need to see them play a bunch before I can tell you which way that will trend

Next year we will have cash to spend and will make a splash or 3, this year making the playoffs would be an acheivement given the roster youth turnover and the need for those new faces to get acclimated in the system

No rebuild necessary. This team will be better equipped to compete with  different personnel. Remember Josh makes receivers better and with Kincaid, Shakir and Samuels getting Diggs targets and a new OC approach with Cook being more involved, the offense will be harder to defend. Throw in Coleman, and Davis and this offense is better than last year. The Defense is going to be better because Poyer and Hyde weren’t great and Milano is back. Miller can’t be worse and we have Douglas for a whole year. I like our chances.

  5. I was an 8 year old visiting my sister during Christmas vacation at UB.  We went to a game at the rock pile and watched Kemp, Gilchrist  and the awesome Bills defense dominate the Babe Parilli led Patriots. After that, I was hooked.

I have told this story before, but my grandad was Czech, fought in the Polish army in WW2. He was captured by the Germans and put in a prisoner of war camp but managed to escape and make it to France where he was hidden by the resistance and eventually made it to London after the war. He eventually met my grandmother, they married, had kids (including my mum) and then at 61, just before I was born, my grandad had a massive heart attack and died. My grandmother would still go back to Poland and Czechoslovakia (as was) every few years to visit his family and in the early 90s was in a shop with her friend in Poland, overheard English speaking voices and got talking to an American brother and sister who themselves had family history in Poland and were back researching it. They ended up going for dinner, became friends and in 2002 we visited them in California where they now live for a family holiday. It was August and there was a Bills pre-season game (Lions, who else) on the TV and despite living in Cal they were from Buffalo and the guy is a huge Bills fan. So my dad (who had watched bits of the NFL when it first came to British tv in the 80s) and I sat down with a beer to watch the Bills game with him. I was hooked instantly, from a single, pretty ropey pre-season game. In those first few years as a student about to go of to university watching the games was impossible so I'd just follow the scores online. But in 2006 or 2007 Yahoo had a link up with the NFL and did an international streaming service. It was ropey as hell, buffered all the time, and the picture quality was terrible... but I subscribed. Then after a year the NFL took it in house improved the service and developed International GamePass and I think since 2008 I have missed one regular season game (Saints in 2013 under Marrone because I was at Wembley watching the 49ers instead).

Nice story. You’re a legitimate fan l that has bled internally along with the rest of us .

Well unfortunately Von never became our Chris Jones impact player.  Like Gunner says I'm not expecting much this year.  And the organization will likely part ways in June 2025.  Just an incredibly unlucky event which tends to follow Buffalo throughout the years.

Let’s hope the brain trust learned a costly lesson with Miller, and to think he preferred Dallas and Beane blew their offer out of the water. Frustrating

What an atrocious contract that was. Should have been a fireable offense, it's lead weights on the ankles when you're trying to swim. Can we REALLY roll the guy out there this year?

Your frustration is understandable and as a rule paying a 34 year old edge rusher 120 million is not good policy. The fact that he blew out his knee in the first year of the deal is the reason it’s bad policy because the full recovery is a low percentage proposition. Now we’re stuck with the burden of that bad contract on our cap for another season. Beane took a shot thinking Miller would be the final piece to get us a ring. Now we probably should give him this season to make a contribution. Most of the damage is done.

Well, last season at least.  He's a concussion concern going forward regardless and tying-up almost $200M in guaranteed money isn't what they want to do, or should do.  I've heard that they want series of bonuses to hedge their bets, but I doubt Tua/his agent will agree.

Do you think he can take a team all the way? If they have a killer defense and an  O-line that protects and opens holes, I guess he competes, but they’re nowhere near that profile, especially after the losses on their D-line.

That’s right, determine a guy like Williams, who showed flashes and closing speed, is not any good after one season. He didn’t get on the field much last year anyway. Give him a chance.

My apologies, you didn’t dismiss the guy. You’re right, Sean never had confidence in the kid and buried him in the doghouse.

Thought we drafted Williams last year for this. instead, that douchenozzle McDermott decided it was better to have Klein try to cover him after spending the season on his couch planning family vacations.

personally I didn’t want Williams, there were much better TE killers out there in the draft and he didn’t want them. Then he drafted that other kid this year. Maybe one of them will eventually be able to cover Kelce after he turns 40 and can’t run without crutches anymore.

Looking at the roster, the schedule, etc. The team needs to win early and often.
Realistically with all the new WR’s & newish coordinator - I don’t see the offense carrying the team early. It may take a while to find the right pieces and to evolve an identity. I can see lots of 2 TE sets, passing in the middle, running the ball and grinding it out - while missing on long shots down the field (timing, familiarity, scheme fit).
the defense will need to be ahead of the O and keep points off the board!

After 6 or so games, things should start clicking on O and by then we are in the tough parts of the schedule and need that to stay in the playoff hunt.

if Von looks the same, Milano is still recovering form, the safeties are meh, etc it will be a bad start, and in a hole by mid season. Needing Josh to go hero mode to save the season again. He will be banged up come end of the schedule, playoffs.

what do you guys think about the start of season defense?

You’re panicking without knowing what both units will look like. Just remember our receivers were MIA  at the end of last season and Josh pulled games out of his rear end.  O -line should be better with one year playing together under their belt and an improvement at center. I say the receivers and TEs are better this year and our backs led by  Cook and Davis should be improved. On defense, our safeties were old and getting dominated. The addition of Edwards and the 2nd rounder from Utah with Rapp will be better in run support and as good in Sean’s zone defense against the pass. Without a healthy White, and the addition of Douglas, our corners were effective last season until KC. If we get anything out of Elam, I see improvement. Resigning Jones, AJ and Rousseau in a walk year means our D-line if Miller is healthy, will be as good or better if the FAs and drafted guys give us anything. With Milano back LB should be our best position group on defense. The teams that line up against us early have plenty to defend against with vastly different personnel and a highly motivated #17. I like our chances.

  13. Tua is a great kid and has shown that he can stay healthy over a full season.  I hope he gets a long term deal mostly because he’s just not good enough to win in a division with Josh and a conference with 5 superior QBs.(Burrow, Mahomes, Josh, Herbert and Lawrence) He’s also not great in cold playoff venues. If Miami is keen on breaking through, they should trade Tua to a team  in the NFC and try and get a young stud in the draft while their great receivers are still young.

  14. It took 3 years for the Bills play callers and game planners to realize this guy has developed into a big play, clutch receiver that consistently gets separation and catches everything. You want to classify him as #2 or #3, be my guest, but he will be one of Josh’s primary targets when games are on the line.  I think Coleman and Samuel will be great long term additions and our Kincaid is probably the best TE not named Kelce in the AFC, but Shakir has chemistry with Josh and wants the ball in the biggest moments. I’m very optimistic about our receivers and Cook as a matchup nightmare out of the backfield. Good luck covering these talented young guys and protecting against Josh running wild.

I think he's earned the chance to be the Kicker for another season. If he screws up, then you can seriously consider getting another Kicker.

    That's all.

Let me ask you, who is this more dependable version of a Kicker that the Bills can get? You obviously have a player in mind, no?

If fans have misgivings about a kicker heading into the season, you would think Beane has some trepidation about Bass. It’s up to him to bring in some plan B. If he doesn’t and Bass implodes we have to question the McDermott/Beane competence. There’s players in the UFL, undrafted free agents and kickers that get cut that can compete.

    To compare.....

    FG%

    Brandon Aubrey* 94.7

    Justin Tucker  90.2

    Harrison Butker  89.1

    Daniel Carlson  88

    Chris Boswell  87.2

    Jake Elliott  86.2

    Tyler Bass  84.9

    Jason Sanders  83.3

    XP%

    Justin Tucker  98.7

    Jason Sanders  98.3

    Tyler Bass  97.6

    Jake Elliott  95.8

    Chris Boswell   94.8

    Harrison Butker  94.5

    Brandon Aubrey*  94.2

    Daniel Carlson  88.3

Brandon Aubrey has played only one season in the NFL.

Bass is in the lower rung of the top Kickers when it comes to Field Goals. However, he is one of the best when it comes to Extra Points.

No question that he can be a lot better at field goals. I'm just willing to give him another season before thinking of replacing him.

Why are you defending Bass? He sucks and do you deny that your ass doesn’t pucker when he’s got an important kick. Give it up he’s just a kicker. We can get a more dependable version.

Agree. Something was off with Bass last year. And I don't know how easily a kicker regains his confidence.

McD seemed to lose confidence in him as the year went along - rarely going for 50+yds - and it culminated with that final kick.

They once said Haack was the best holder in the game, maybe Martin isn't (with Haack holding in 2021, Bills' kicker Tyler Bass posted a career-best 87.5 success rate on field goals and made all 51 extra-point attempts.). So I guess by bringing Haack back to compete, they're trying to address that issue.

I don't know, Bass should be a little more resilient.

If the Bills are going to play a plodding, ball control style of offense they absolutely need an automatic kicker. They can't chew up 8 mins of the clock and then shank a FG.  There is absolutely no room for error with that style of O and there is really no room for error in the playoffs either against quality teams. Your kicker can be the difference between losing in the division round every year to bringing home a few Lombardis. Just ask Tom Brady

    Full agreement

1 hour ago, Mark Vader said:

Operative word being "should". Not every Kicker is going to be automatic.

Baltimore, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, KC, Miami, Dallas and Vegas all have better kickers than Buffalo.

I don't think that Bass is this glaring problem on the Bills that a lot of fans are making him out to be. He's not the reason that we lost that playoff game to the Chiefs. Did anyone see our defense in that game?

Yes, field goals were an issue last season, yet I just chalk that up to Bass having a down year, it happens. That does not mean that he can't rebound from it. Bass is still very good when it comes to Extra Point attempts, which is a key statistic that everyone overlooks. Extra Points are no longer chip shots.

I'm comfortable with giving Bass more leeway, because I think he can do good for us. I'm not going to dismiss him.

As far as Special Teams goes, I'm more concerned about Punter than I am Kicker.

He may have not been the reason we lost, but he certainly didn’t help. He also kept the Steelers in the game with a 27 yard duck hook. You can’t let kickers crush your soul and don’t get emotionally tied to a kicker. They should be automatic.

  19. 10 hours ago, Mark Vader said:

Do you think he can rebound?

So, are you saying that Bass is done as a Kicker? His career is over and the Bills should get rid of him this season?

I think he should be on a short leash and not be given the upper hand in any competition in camp. He was an average kicker last regular season and an abject failure in the postseason. You think he should be given a pass for his performance because he was good 2 years ago? Any other position he would be on the outside fighting for a spot on the roster.

  20. 12 minutes ago, Mark Vader said:

Overall, I think he's been a very good Kicker for us.

People here saying that we desperately need a new Kicker on the team is a big overreaction.

I think that it's fair to give Bass another chance.

Also, he's 205/210 on XP attempts. That's pretty good considering that extra points are no longer "chip shots" anymore.

Missing a 27 yd FG to lock down a playoff game against Pitt with an amateurish duck hook and then effectively ending our season with that clueless slice on a 40 yd chip shot is not nothing. He WAS a good kicker. That’s what happens with kickers. All of a sudden they’re a liability. If you think the rest of the team can stay committed when a kicker starts blowing automatic kicks you’re just not being realistic. It also changes the strategy of an offense. When you see kickers like the ones on Balt, KC, Cinn., Miami, you realize legitimately teams can’t accept mediocrity. These spirit killers rarely rehabilitate themselves.

NFL Network showing a replay of Chief-Bills playoff game and got me thinking again about Bass' performance. Throuout most of his career he was nicknamed "Bass-O-Matic", but in this game he not only missed the field goal at the end of the game with a wicked slice, he barely made 2 extra points with the same slice (worse than my driver-- and that's bad)

Has anyone done a deep dive on why the downturn? I'm curious if there was a hold issue, technique issue, or injury issue.

Has to be more than a mis-hit with three of them in one game.

At least so far, the Bills don't seem too concerned as they haven't announced anyone they are bringing in for a tryout.

Bass is not our guy anymore. When kickers have down seasons and then miss chip shots in big spots in the postseason, it’s a crisis of confidence. Why not bring in some unconscious, automatic star from a college and call it a day with Bass. We can’t let this guy destroy us. These guys play too hard and care too much to let Sean’s loyalty and hoping and wishing he gets good again.
