I pity you for following them during those years. I only remember two things from that era of the Bills. Watching them beat the Jets in 1968 for their only win of the season (the year the Jets went on to win SB III). And, that I had a Bills beanie hat. I walked to the corner store wearing the beanie and the owner said he'd give me the candy I was getting for free if I could name Dennis Shaw's backup, this must have been 1970. I don't think I even knew who Dennis Shaw was so I obviously wasn't really following them. The first I really remember being a diehard fan was OJ's 2000 yard season, 1973. I watched every game that was televised, knew all of the stats every week, and made sure to announce them in school Monday morning when Mr. Sealy asked how our weekend was.

I was at that game vs. the Jets.  I think Jack Kemp came in to lead a big comeback.  I left 2 months later for Vietnam - oh I remember it well.

  2. There has been a lot of discussion on this Board (and I love this Board) about a contract extension for GM Beane.  McDermott was hired first by the Pegula's.  It was an odd situation in the NFL when a HC is hired before his supposed boss.  He also got  a long-term extension beyond 2020.

    • "Beane's actual power is still in question given his hand selection by coach Sean McDermott, who was hired long before Beane. The Buffalo News suggests McDermott "will be the one that makes the final call" if need be. Beane has a strong background as a personnel man, but it's become clear he won't have total control in Buffalo."

I have a feeling Coach McD runs the show. He tells the GM the players he wants to add or cut from the team.  Beane goes after them in Free Agency and in the draft.  He handles the signing details. Some of the salaries for F/A's has been out of line.  Mitch Morse and Trent Murphy still getting $7 mil/season as examples.

I don't know if Beane will get a big contract.  He might want to go back to Carolina where their current GM is under fire. He was the GM several years ago, was fired, and then re-hired in the same position by the Panthers. Beane worked under him.

It's all a  big MYSTERY!   ANY COMMENTS??

Edmunds makes defensive adjustments in response to motion etc.  It would be highly confusing to have two players doing that.

Seems like something you're just saying

Again - if all he does is make adjustments from the radio in his helmet right before the snap it IS confusing.  He's not a true MLB making calls.  I've never seen the DB's or DL shift at all at his command.  I don't wan to argue with you - this is just what I see.  We're both Bills fans.  Me for a long-long time.

Edmunds moves players before the snap all the time.  It's part of his role as the MLB.  He has the helmet with the radio in it and he makes the defensive calls.  There are a couple pieces breaking down the Bills D and where it struggled just this season where you can hear Edmunds yelling "back, back".  I'll see if I can find one or two.

Perhaps you could indicate the games and plays where you've seen Klein filling this role?  It would be interesting because it would indicate a clear change in roles.

I don't have specific plays for that.  I sense his veteran status allows him to help with defensive alignments.  I don't think Edmunds does anything more than listen to the radio in his helmet and repeat what he hears.  He had the LOWEST Wonderlic score at LB in his draft class.  I don't see leadership.

Hey, at least it's talking about football, and not talking about hypothetical trades for Josh Allen.

    I realize that's a low bar, but...

I wonder if you would say more about this point, because it should be Edwards job

Edmunds is a great athlete but not necessarily a leader.  He plays 'light'.  I really haven't seen him move players before the snap on defense.  I do see Klein trying to do that!

  6. Phil came to the Bills after a great career with the Raiders at age 31. He was a 4-time All Pro and helped the Raiders win a Super Bowl.  In Buffalo he was past his prime.  He wasn't a pass rusher and had NO SACKS in his 13 year NFL career.   Phil was an emotional & tough play leader on defense.  When he tackled someone he nailed them straight up.

AJ came to the Bills at age 29.  He is also past his prime. He's never been voted to a Pro-Bowl.  Over his 8 years in the NFL he has 14 sacks with 3.5 of them with the Bills in 2020.  He yells instructions on defense and when he tackles it's a tough,  hard hit.  Toughness and and leadership are missing on the 2020 Bills defense.  AJ  can help with that!

Yea, I would think that the DE's job in that situation would be to set the edge and ensure that the play does not go outside. On both TD runs, the interior looked like the parting of the Red Sea and Murray raced into the endzone pretty much untouched. The fault there is with the DTs and LBs IMHO.

It was a quick play down near the goal line where LB's had no reason to back out in coverage.  Where were they - - twice??

Also, what the heck happens at halftime that they play so poorly in the 3rd Qtr?   I don’t know how much of anything can be done in 12 minutes, which includes the walks to and from the locker room.  Do the players take a 5 minute nap, then come out groggy?

Obviously, if the coaches are making adjustments, they’ve determined them before getting into the locker room.  Not much time to draw it up.

Marv Levy didn't believe in adjustments. Just go play as coached!

Well I certainly saw it coming from a mile away, but that's easy for me to say sitting on my couch. But if Hughes rushed Murray instead, it would have at least force him to try to juke him and could have given time for defenders to help.

The Cardinals set that play up based on OUR defense.  It was all too easy!

Yeah, so every other coaching staff is a bunch of idiots, too. How about, he’s freaky quick, fast and shifty and like Lamar last year, it takes some adjustment.

I wonder about the complainers. Are they perfect in their jobs 100% of the time? I’m thinking probably not, but it doesn’t happen on national TV. The NFL is a tough business. We are getting better year over year. I’m not freaking out over a loss to a good team on maybe the best individual play of the entire season.

We certainly have places we need to improve (even McD will tell you that about himself), but I like the big picture.

Not a complainer - a realist.  With this defensive talent all over the field the big picture may be sad and frustrating.

Any other negative thoughts for us? Get them all out of your system.

As for those plays. The first was a great fake. I don't blame them. The second one they should have saw it coming. But they didn't.

both fakes were great - but - -who was supposed to stop it?

DE's have been getting sucked in on plays like that all year long. Why should yesterday be any different. This has been bugging me the most about this coaching staff. I haven't figured out if the coaches don't know what they are doing, or the players are dumber than a box of rocks. Either way,  things need to change soon.

I think the box of rocks is closer to the truth!
