First NFL player I ever got an autograph from, far and away my favorite player from that era.

We were visiting Buffalo to see some family, I think is was the summer of '75, and we went to watch practice a few days before they were going to play the Packers in a preseason game ( I think it was the game where Robert James suffered a career ending injury).  Earlier that summer, OJ got into a fist fight with Neal Craig, a defensive back. I remember Craig mocking OJ when he was signing autographs after practice. I remember the look on OJ's face, if looks could.....anyway they got rid of Craig soon after. Chandler was sitting on his helmet on the sideline during practice and we got close enough to get his attention but we had no paper for him to sign. He scrounged around on the sideline and tore up a used envelope he found, signed that, and handed it to us. Gave us a wave, we yelled "Go Bills!" and he gave us a thumbs up and went back to sitting on his hat.

James injury happened against Rams when Lawrence McCutchron hit him.

Thanks again, Chandler; you're keeping me sane before training camp!

What a shame Rashad blew out his knee in '75. The Bills gave up on him, only to watch him become a perennial pro-bowler with the Vikings. But surgeons were just not that good at fixing knees back then: think of Jerry Butler and Jeff Nixon -- and (no offense to Tre White and Butch Byrd!) the Bills' greatest cornerback ever, Robert James.

Speaking of knees, never forgave Lawrence McCutcheon for basically ending James career after an interception in a freaking preseason game.

What is happening? TSW is starting to look like a police blotter. Four separate disturbing topics on just the first page. Is it CTE, stupidity, addiction, depression, maybe a combination of issues. It's getting a little scary how this is happening as much as it with these professional athletes.

4 out of 2400. Guessing better then other population samples.

This is also true. However, my original response was to Jokeman's post that said, "Thank God Polian intervened and said we should take Bruce instead" - at which point I responded that decision was made easy for Polian because Flutie signed with the USFL in February.

Your statement is true. But it still wasn't Polian who made the decision to pick Bruce and not Flutie. Flutie agreed to sign with the USFL in late January, and actually signed his contract on February 6th. Bills GM Terry Bledsoe had a heart attack right around that same day, prompting Ralph to ultimately let Polian take over as GM.

Polian did do a good job signing Bruce as Bruce had also been drafted by Baltimore of the USFL, and was receiving a large offer. But the decision to take Bruce and not Flutie wasn't really made by Polian. I have doubts whether Polian would have chosen Flutie over Bruce anyway, but that decision was basically made for him.

Flutie wouldn’t have been picked till the 5th round or lower even if he hadn’t signed with the USFL. The only decision for Polian was Bruce or Childress.

  5. The K gun was named for Keith McKellar.

Polian's decision not to use the first pick on Flutie was made quite simple for him. The reason Flutie went on to not be drafted until the 11th round is because In January he was drafted by the USFL's New Jersey Generals, where, in February, he signed a contract making him the highest paid pro athlete at the time. Two full months before the NFL draft.

This is true but when Flutie signed with New Jersey he stated the Bills never contacted him.

    Lemme check the ole budget..

    We can offer $14.82..

But apparently Fromm has trade value now so let’s just trade him for Jaire Alexander. You know Green Bay loves having multiple quarterbacks on the roster

There is still plenty they can do to open up space without doing harm to the future.

    For Bills only:

Going back to the 1970s it has to be Terry Miller, but the most recent was Robert Foster.  Miller was a 1st round pick who fizzled out after a solid rookie year.  Foster was an undrafted free agent so not much was expected of him.  A funny re-draft of the 2018 draft in the off season after 2018 had Foster as one of their 1st rounders in the redraft.

    For the NFL:

In  1969 Greg Cook was the Bengals 1st rounder (5th overall) and looked to be a franchise QB as a rookie.  He wrecked his arm & didn't play again until 1973.  He played in only 1 game that year & was done forever.  If you never heard of him, here's a good story:  https://thegruelingtruth.com/football/greg-cook-he-could-have-been-the-greatest-ever/

More recently it has to be RGIII.

Greg Cook might have been a hall of farmer if medicine was the same as now. For me, one hit wonders shouldn’t include guys derailed by injury, but that is just my opinion.

I am not sure about this - is it over and he is Bills player for 2,1M this year? Or can some other team steal him from us if we get som draft pick?

Bills have right of first refusal so they can match any offer he gets if they choose to.
