“Alex Smith was great for Patrick,” Chiefs Coach Andy Reid said. “Alex Smith is a great person and a great player. I wish I would have had him when he was young. I got him when he was a little bit older.”

“I attribute a lot of my early success to Alex, the way he was able to be a pro every single day and the way he was able to go about not only being a great football player but a great human being,” Mahomes said. “It showed me a ton. I learned a lot about how to read coverages and blitzes from him. He gave me a blueprint of how to go about a week and preparing yourself. It showed me how to have success at an early point in my career that I don’t think I would have gotten anywhere else.”

I'm really glad they gave some well-deserved credit to Alex Smith for his selfless contributions to Mahomes's development. Mahomes is one of those rare talents but I don't feel he would have come on so strong without some guidance and time spent watching the starter for a year. Smith could have been a d!ck since he knew Mahomes was his replacement but he chose to help the kid out without any reservations. Pretty rare IMHO

... Then look for the #1 reciever in the draft.

Speaking of which, was just looking at highlights of Jauan Jennings who somebody's mock showed the Bills taking in the 3rd round. This is my first year actually devoting time to this aspect of the off-season so I don't know how he'll shake out. But his brief highlight video showed some good moves and receptions.

  3. Allen is still very much in development despite all of his improvements. He's learning from every game. BTW I loved the way he let Cody Ford spike the ball after the first TD v Pittsburgh.

The Bills need to just keep doing what they have been doing all season. Don't try to get fancy just because it's NE. All normal laws of physics seem to get tossed aside every time this matchup rolls around anyway. Why convolute it now? Trust the process.

The NFC is really strong this year.  Sea, SF, NO, GB, Minn are all going to be higher rates than Buffalo.  NE and Balt should be higher rates in the AFC at this point.   That's 7 teams right there, putting bills at 8.  Being 9 or 10 is accurate and a strong ranking I'd say.

Looking at NFC division leaders earlier this morning, it's pretty impressive that 3 of the 4 are 11-3 on the season.

  5. I'm not & don't pretend to be hyper-familiar with the NFL rulebook. But I would like to hear about that incomplete pass to John Brown where the defender (Josh Norman?) had his ankles wrapped up while #15 was up for the catch.

Was that a legitimate non-call for DPI?

    Thanks!

OK guys, we are 6-2 woohoo!  So why do so many Bills fans act like we are a terrible football team, edging toward implosion?  Some of the posts today absolutely drove me crazy.  I swear some of you are Russian trolls.

    1. Just stop with the "barely beating bad teams" posts.  24-9 is a convincing win.  Redskins are not a good team, but that doesn't mean we are going to win by 100 points.  We had many missed opportunities, but at no point were the Bills not in control of this game.  The R-words never led and never scored a TD.  In the end we won by more than 2 TDs.

    2. We are 6-2 halfway in.  6-2 x 2 = 12-4.  Maybe we drop an extra game or two, but we would have to totally implode not to earn our way to the playoffs this year.  That would be the first time we EARNED our way to the playoffs this century.  Think about that.

    3. Haters cannot have it both ways on Daboll.  He drives me nuts because he outthinks his own self doing the unexpected at the worst possible times.  But here's the thing: we collectively criticized him going into this game as not pounding the rock enough.  And this game, he pounded the rock …  a lot, and successfully.  Yet, somehow, this became a liability late in the game with lots of "stop running on 3rd and 1" posts.  Gore is getting those calls and we want Singletary, I get it but at least Daboll is finally running the football!  Baby steps, sheesh.

    4. Last night I saw upon the stair

A little man who wasn't there.

        He wasn't there again today

I hope he never goes away!

    5. Still so many Allen-cant-get-it-done posts.  He was 14-20, 160 yards and a TD with no INT.  Those aren't great stats for fantasy football, but for NFL football it gets the job done.  His job was not to score 50 points, it was to score more points than the other team.  And once again, he made plays when it most mattered.  And he is learning not throw INTs playing hero ball, throwing it away if he has to.  And OK, I will admit he needs to hold onto the football better when he runs.  But there was at least one put in Barkley post . . . SMH.

    6. Booing your own team is never classy.  I cant imagine it is helpful, either.  Better to circle the wagons and support the team.  Even online.

Bottom line: By now you all know I like a good snark, and we all have fun with "any given Sunday" and "its hard to win in the NFL" tropes.  But it is true that in this league, almost any team can beat almost any other team if they have a good game and/or get some lucky breaks.  We won another game today, and are one win closer to earning a playoff spot.

    GO BILLS!

Really wish I could like your post more than once! Well said!! ????

Sorry. Thanks for pointing that out to me. Not sure why it's posting so large. Am I missing the control somewhere?

  8. "Buffalo can chalk up two wins on missed kicks.

The Bills’ season-opening 17-16 win over the New York Jets came in a game Kaare Vedvik missed an extra-point and 45-yard field goal attempt. In a 14-7 win at Tennessee in Week 5, Titans kicker Cairo Santos missed all four field-goal attempts including two from inside 40 yards."

Maybe I'm suffering from a case of Cranial-Rectal Fusion but, since no one will ever know what would have happened had those teams actually made those field goals, doesn't this fall under the category of "taking what the other team gives you"?

Who's to say if the Titans & Jets HAD made those kicks that the Bills wouldn't have still won?

I haven't drunk so much of the Kool-aid that I don't realize the Bills aren't fully developed yet. This schedule, however, is based on last year's record, which wasn't great.  That's just the way it works.

As McDermott and many of the players have said ad nauseum, 1) the weekly goal is to end up 1-0 (which they have done pretty well so far), and 2) records don't mean squat BEFORE a game. For what DOES mean squat, see #1

Yes, the team that has given the Bills their only defeat thus far is the "defending" Super Bowl champs who themselves had a fairly pathetic offensive performance against this possibly not-so-good team even with all the turnovers.

The time to make an intelligent determination of just how good this team is or isn't would be sometime in January 2020.

And I make this topic statement, because not to dwell on past games coaching decisions, but on today's game coaching decision.

I'm watching Green Bay with 44 sec.left in the half, and Green Bay's coach is calling plays as if they're down 17 points instead of leading 17 to nothing.Green Bay is trying to close this game out in the first half!

Now,I reflect on us today, with the exact same 44 sec, to the half and we throw a short pass for two yards and the next play hasn't even setup yet with time on the clock and we're heading to the locker room with a 7 to nothing lead.

I would like our coaches to have a little more aggressive mindset in these remaining games going forward!

IDK but maybe they're being overly cautious given this offense's tendency to turn the ball over? (Just giving them benefit of the doubt)

it was more a meltdown than a regression. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen Allen more rattled under center.

As much as I despise NE, their D is #1 for a reason and they showed up last week. I honestly don't think Allen was ever not off balance. The Bills D held Brady to his worst game in over a decade. Allen doesn't have even 10% of Brady's experience. The effects of those hyoertough defenses works both ways.

Not to imply that Allen didn't mess up - he definitely made poor decisions with hair all over them. I just don't think he was ever able to get into any kind of rhythm against the Pats.

Today he was so subdued I almost felt sorry for him. For the most part he protected the ball but it was almost like he had had a lobotomy.. His decision to slide instead of stepping out of bounds to me was very telling.

I hope he gets some of that fire back into his play that has made him so exciting to watch and such an X factor that has given opposing defenses fits. Provided of course he still takes care of the ball.

I heard they were making fun of Allen in the pats locker room.  They also were making fun of buffalo and it’s fans. They also said tyrod was the best QB buffalo has ever had. Brady said he is gonna play without shoes. He wants it to be fair.

It's BS like that that makes the Pats the most despised team in the NFL. And their fans are 100x worse. I know that first hand - the neighbors behind us are rabid NE fans. Even their dog is hideously obnoxious. BTW, who names their dog Steve? ?

  12. Hands down, Cowboys

Gotta go with Dallas, NYG then Washington.  In the winter I live near a lot of Dallas fans and they are insufferable.

I lived in the Rio Grande Valley (McAllen, Harlingen, Brownsville) for 8 years, my wife - a Buffalo native - lived there for 25 years. Insufferable hardly begins to describe Cowboys fans!

I am usually chill with mispellings, just think that pointing them out can be overused as a tool to discredit sound debate.

Heck most of us are on our phones where typos easily happen and auto correct can have unforeseen consequences. Like a friend of mine that sent out a mass corporate email that ended with "Sorry for the incontinence".

You're right but, as a writer, it's just maddening to me. My wife, whom I love dearly, omits all vowels in many of her texts and frequently uses "too" instead of "to". What can I say, I'm quickly becoming an old fart. LOL

Favre helped Rodgers?   That's not what everyone else has heard.

Patrick Mahomes didn't need Alex Smith.........his old man was a long time major leaguer........he grew up knowing how to be a pro athlete.

I think Allen got all the QB room learnin' up he needed from Derek Anderson.........sometimes the lesser QB's actually make better teachers.

You're right but I doubt Rogers was twiddling his thumbs all that time sitting behind Farve.

Not dismissing the very real talents of Mahomes or Rogers. Just opining that had either been put in a starting role immediately after being drafted might not have seen the same longer term results but who knows.

Both might still have become greats but to the point of the hackneyed statements that the Bills woulda, coulda, shoulda about both players it's just one of those things we'll never know.

  15. Can't help but wonder what his % would have been had they not stopped passing in the 4th.

Particularly loved the completions he had on the run in the 1st & 4th. Honestly was holding my breath fully expecting an INT both times. He almost made it look easy.

Was thinking how sick all the JA haters must be after the first two games. Unfortunately, they'll just save it as ammunition for if/when the Bills lose a game.
