It’s strange, but in some ways I enjoyed the games more when I didn’t expect to win. I wanted the Bills to win, but I didn’t expect it. So, I enjoyed the wins more and the losses were a lot less gutting.

The solution to this problem is to win by three scores.

But I know what you mean. When Orton won that game in Detroit, I was over the moon. Crazy how disappointed I would be to see a game like that on Thanksgiving.

Poyer wasn't terrible in Cleveland.  Definitely not what he became in Buffalo, but when given consistent playing time, he performed pretty well.  They just changed coaches so often that he got passed over a lot.

I shouldn't have said "terrible."  It's pointlessly inflammatory.

I watched some YouTube vids that didn't make me anywhere near as excited as I was about Hyde and Hyde was himself a backup. I'm not a coach or scout but he looked to me like he struggled. Lots of those vids misrepresent promising players. I stopped watching film on Josh Allen at Wyoming after a single dumb vid.

You don't come to camp and compete to then sit out.

And he had injuries didn't he? Especially the final year when if memory serves he had won a starting job coming out of camp but then only played a few games because of injuries. He was untapped potential but he had flashed in Cleveland for sure.

The torn kidney was the one that completely freaked me out. I just can't imagine tearing an inside bit. Shudder.

  3. I don't think safety should ever be a priority. And with this staff, a dropoff in DB talent isn't going hit as hard as other positions.

These are the guys who closed the season for the number one defense in the NFL last year:

Jordan Poyer (7th) terrible in Cleveland.
Mikah Hyde (5th) backup safety/slot in GB. Great playoff run his last year.
    Taron Johnson (4th)
    Dane Jackson (7th)
    Levi Wallace (UDFA)

That's three studs and two competent backs, all from pretty humble beginnings.

Given the supposed attention other front offices are giving Benford (6th), I don't think McDermott is just finding diamonds in the rough. He's polishing whatever rocks he finds into gems and he can keep on doing it for a lot less money than Poyer is asking. He can't turn Dane into Reevis, but they won't be totally exposed with a mid round pick. Ehem, Josh Norman.

This isn't really the case at any other position, so I'd rather see money spent on skill positions or even o-line, the latter being filled with turds that can't be polished. (I'm holding out hope that Kromer changes this.)

On the other hand, be a witch Mr. Bean and keep him here. (at 2/32M)

  4. Most recently, that Levi wallace would get eight or nine million to stay in Buffalo.

But the worst is a tie:

That Peterman could be a top ten QB.

That Tyrod could be a top ten QB.

That Manuel could be a top ten QB.

That Orton could be a top ten QB.

That Fitz could be a top ten QB. (I STILL CLING TO THIS ONE! ).

There are others but I don't want to belabor the point. I'm a total homer.

This is my conjecture: He will be 27 next season and wants to finally get paid, and will go to whoever offers him the most.

    I don't blame him.

Neither do I, which is why I said in the very next sentence, "if he takes less to stay it won't be by much." And why I finished with, "may be close to 9." The Bills will value him as much as any other team and will pay market value or very near.  He gets paid.

What i don't see is them dropping four or six million on some mediocrity nor rolling with Dane and a rookie to start the season.

It depends on what he wants, what the Bills feel he's worth, and if they can get a better player for the same or less.

This is my conjecture: he will want to stay, the Bills will want to keep him and every team will put his value at about the same level. If Levi plays for less to stay in Buffalo, it won't be by much. And if the Bills replace him, it will have to be for a significantly better and much more expensive player which I doubt they can afford. I do not expect them to roll the dice in the draft and I don't expect to see a marginal EJ Gaines type replace him.

In sum, I expect to see Levi signed, probably for more than the 5 or 6 mil that lots of posters seem to think is a limit and it may be close to 9.

  7. With White's injury, Wallace should be the presumptive CB1 week 1. If they don't pick up a premium player in March, I can't see them letting Levi walk in the hope that there's a day-one starter available to them in the draft. He also seems like an archetype for McDermott -- disciplined, available, good tackler, rarely out of place, etc.

Like they did with Milano, I think they pay him plenty and lock him up for three or four years. DBs are not the problem, why make them one? Just a slightly back loaded deal with guarantees, my Amazon Prime make cap go brrrrr.

  8. Why is Summertime Sweatshirt guy getting a pass here? When we took basically the same personnel from the Chair Tossing Kiddie Puncher to the Popcorn and Movies guy they absolutely face-planted. Sure a power blocking offense is the only one my fool eyes can follow, so I'm biased, but maybe it's more than talent here. We hired a rookie line coach and our line stinks way too much for it to be laid all at the feet of Morse, Williams, Dawkins and any two randomly selected scrubs.

But I agree with your post that if somehow they change their mind this regime has earned the trust of the fan base.

Not that I miss those days, but Hackett, Marrone, and Whaley made me feel smart. Nowadays, it's best that OBD just not read my letters.

  10. If Beane doesn't want to piss away the tiny amount of cap we have left on an already elite secondary by signing a glass-boned me first malcontent in the downward slope of his overrated career, I'm fine with that.

If, on the other hand, Beane wants to use his cap magic to turn a great secondary into an incandescent secondary by signing a perennial pro-bowl win-first premier playmaker in the prime of his career, I can accept that too.
