The general consensus around the league the last 50 years is that your back-up QB should be able to hold the fort if your starter goes down. Not win games for you but not lose them either. And if you can break even, say, go 2-2 if your starter misses four games versus 0-4 or 1-3, you have a good back-up. Barkley is not that guy and five teams have already decided that.

This isn't a question of experience or a guy finally getting it. Barkley "got it" a long time ago. His physical limitations are what always did and always will hold him back. He's also capable of having games like he did against the Jets. He never had one like that in his whole career but he is capable of it if his weak-ass throws are not intercepted when they could or should be, like happened in that game. He's always been a smart guy with pretty good accuracy. But he's Peterman Plus and that ain't good enough, which is why the Bills are his sixth team.

Not sure who is going to be available. The Bills thought DA was a much better choice before they signed Barkley.

Not true, Barkley was still recovering from his knee injury when DA signed.

It's nice that people are getting emotional and talking about a guy's reaction.

Still, that doesn't factor into whether it's best for the team to keep someone.

Barkley had one start where, a few weeks before, he was out of the NFL.  If he's good enough to mentor Allen and, if necessary backup, then sure, sign him.

His celebration on the sideline doesn't matter.

He was injured in preseason and reached an injury settlement.  Wouldn't have been cut otherwise by the Bengals

The bills haven't had great drafts in the past 10yrs. The Bills of the 90's built a great team with their drafts. Beane has brought in some talent Josh Allen I believe is going to be a great player in this league. They need to build a offense that can protect him. Their running game with shady isn't going anywhere its time to draft a star running back. Their receiving core is mediocre at best. Time to draft a dominate receiver. On the defensive side of the ball they haven't had a dominate pass rusher since Bruce Smith. Beane needs to get the best players in the draft in order to be considered a playoff contender.

Im guessing you mean draft wise? Schobel and Mario Williams come to mind, before Rex ruined the defense...

If Foster is basically a number one and Zay and Mckenzie are developing nicely and have roster spots all locked up next year, then why is Allen taking so long back there to find guys, complete so few passes, and only score 14 points? We can't have it both ways so which is it?

Foster is getting better every week.  McKenzie too.  Don't forget he was carted off and came back 15 minutes later.  Zay needs to get more consistent

I agree.  And Allen is just a rookie.   He has a lot to learn.   Actually, there's a part of me that wants McKEnzie, Jones and Foster to be the starting receivers next season just so Allen will work with the same receivers for an entire off-season and season.   I think that alone would show improvement over this season.

In fact, I'd be astonished if the starting wideouts next season were those three.  Someone better will show up, in free agency or the draft.

Others have commented over the past few weeks, and it fits in this discussion, about how it's hard to remember one great catch this season.   We're not seeing many out and out drops, but we aren't seeing great catches from any of these guys.   I expect there'll be a better pass catcher somewhere in the lineup.

I like Foster and McKenzie a lot.  Feel like Zay might need a sports psychologist for his drops.  He has good games followed by brutal ones.  It's like after he drops one, he drops them all.

Thanks.  You make a really good point.  I'm not sure either you nor I know whether he's a conservative coach or he's a smart coach being conservative now because that gives his team the best chance to win. I've said often the past few weeks that I hope and expect he'll open up more next season, when he should have stronger offense.

One of the reasons I say he's conservative (or at least playing the season conservatively) is  that it seems very clear to me that he doesn't seem to care much if his team scores in the first half, so long as he keeps the game close.   He doesn't take risks in the first half.  I call that conservative.  I get it, and I don't particularly dislike it, but it isn't wide open football in the first half.  And, although I agree it's unfair to conclude he's Jauron all over again, Jauron's philosophy very definitely was stay close until the end, which meant play good defense and don't take chances on offense.  Until McDermott's team starts regularly putting up 21-point first halves, I think that at least that part of his coaching style can be called conservative.

Also, EVERY coach whose team is out of the playoff hunt is going for it on fourth down now, so I wasn't surprised when he did it yesterday.   It didn't take any courage to take that shot.

Plus, his certainly looks like a bend-don't-break defense, which is a conservative approach.   Now, that too may change as his talent improves and his guys know his system.

Still, I think what you say is probably true.  Next year we'll know, because next year he should have a roster with players he wants playing the way he wants to play.   Then we'll know better.

I think he's been getting more aggressive as the season's gone on, and as Allen's been healthier.  Same with Daboll's playcalling.  Having WRs actually running routes unlike KB also helps.  Foster and McKenzie seem to have good chemistry with Allen.  It was nice seeing WRs run past the first down marker for a change instead of stopping short.  The past few years, on 3rd and long,  we might as well have punted.  Now, I feel like there's always a chance, even if the odds are bad of making it.

he is 4-5 because of the trash out there we have catching the ball

he is 4-5 because he is a rookie

he is 4-5 because he is RAW talent with much to learn

he is 4-5 because of the trash offensive line we have.

Most Bills fans get this, A troll on the other hand would point out stupid facts like this,. Thus one would wonder.. With the amount of posts you have saying "He's 4-5 as a starter right?" is going to make people think you are a troll.

He's basically 2 plays away from being 6-3 as a starter.  If Clay caught the pass and the defense stopped the Jets in the red zone (I believe there was a 4th down conversion on that drive), then there'd be a whole different narrative about Allen nationally.

Didn't you see all those passes that went flying way out of bounds?

I'd rather he be sure it goes way out of bounds on a throwaway than risk a pick.

Where are all the people that said we screwed up not drafting Equanimeous St Brown? Foster now has double his receiving yardage.

I'd still take St Brown over McCloud.  I'll never understand the McCloud pick

Even the one that was out of bounds was probably the most acrobatic catch by a Bill this season.  Barely missed

Id love a link to the schmuck that called the post game show and tried to bait the host into saying that this was Allens best game- just so he could "put the host in his place" by pointing out that Zay was wide open and Allen threw into double coverage on the Foster td. Thus arguing he isnt getting it by making the "wrong" decision.

A decent game by Allen is awesome BUT it sure does bring out the nut balls.

    POLORIZING kid, thats for sure.

That had to be one of the most ridiculous calls I've ever heard.  Based on their days today prior to that, who would trust Zay over Foster if both were open on a play?

I'm sorry but anyone watching this game with an open mind knows damn well that Allen has thrown the ball GREAT today.  His receivers don't give him any help at all.  It is not reasonable to expect Allen to make perfect throws every time.  I believe that 90% of the WR's in the league make all three of those catches on that last drive.

The Saints and Rams alone each have about 6 guys that could make those catches....
