Did anyone read the article and not just the clickbait tweet?

He wasn't in the building b/c his wife went into labor. He's not immediately coming back because he has a knee injury and going to IR.

Last week, Smith addressed the press and gave a preview of the looming decision to make a change at quarterback.

“We will have some very intense meetings in the next couple of days. Obviously, I know where we’re at. We understand, too, that we’ve been in some close games lately and we need to get back over the hump,” Smith said. "There will be changes made. Everything that we decide to do I will be as transparent as possible.”

That day, Smith also informed the press that Mariota wasn’t in the building because his wife went into labor with their first child.

Smith added on Monday that Mariota was also likely to be placed on injured reserve with what Smith described as a “chronic” knee injury.

    This is no fun.

I prefer to think he told his agent he was entering the transfer portal.

The only Vickers I've heard of is the machine gun?

If we could set it up in the middle of the field in the secondary we could probably cut way down on crossing routes.

I don't see how the NFL could object as long as it comes with a safety

Not sure there has ever been a reward for just making your conference championship. Still need to have no more than 1 loss at the end of the day. They’ve been very consistent about that. “Championships won”, however, is one of the tiebreaker criteria. So if usc had won last night they would go over Ohio state because they both had one loss but usc won their conference.

I hear you. My point is the committee can speak out whatever side of their mouth they want to in order to support the outcome they ultimately desire.

THis is why I am looking forward to the playoff expansion. The controversy over who makes it will shift from which "elite" team fails to make it which "good" team fails to make it.  Feelings will still be hurt regarding seeding and which "good" teams are left out, but in any given year all the "elite" teams will be in the dance which I think is what most fans care about.

Powers that be want OSU and Bama in the worst way

"Reward for conference championship" or "body of work"? I think we know which one the committee will value THIS season

Just rewatched the play and now I understand what the OP is saying.  Mac Jones is actually falling back into the end zone on his own accord before any contact is made by a defender.  He does release the ball outside of the end zone and before Groot gets to him, so obviously no safety, but if he holds onto it instead there appears to have been a decent chance he would have fallen flat on his azz in the end zone before being touched.  So yes, the throwaway conceivably could have saved the two points there.

Agreed.  A few people have mentioned forward progress in their responses but if untouched and moving back on ones own there is no forward progress.
