It's more about cap hit. Allen's cap hit the next couple of seasons may in fact be top 5 for the position, not sure. Eagles have paid to WR's because Hurts contract hasn't kicked in yet in terms of big cap hits.

Once those other QB's who signed big deals last year have their big cap hits come due, the Bills will be in a better spot. For a year or so anyway until Allen signs a new contract for the highest paid QB again before his current deal is up.

    It's not

They didn't really have that all-pro TE for more than 60% of last season, and their ROOKIE WR was a MUCH larger piece of the puzzle than Beckham Jr. In fact, Beckham's numbers were closer to BOTH TEs (including the injured one) than they were to Flowers. He DID way outpace Agholor and Bateman lol, I guess.

Baltimore is not where WRs go to flourish. So that's in fact a benefit to Beckham's prospects. Those highlights are sharp. But still, he has not logged a complete, successful season, in a LONG time.

From what I saw of ravens he was good last year and as importantly he looked engaged

Yes he is older and not as physically capable but he's still got the complete repertoire of an NFL wideout. It's not a Davis situation where the guy's ability isn't commensurate to his spot on the depth chart...similar to Sanders who played a very useful WR3 role in the 2021 offense, a guy like Beckham Jr can definitely contribute in the right offense imo

Not sure why everyone thinks he is totally washed. It's upsetting that Beane didn't think this type of talent was worth Deonte Harty money when our outside WR depth chart is the worst in the league. I just don't get it.

Because to admit that he'd probably walk in here as WR1 would mean maybe things aren't as buttoned up as people have convinced themselves they are

How does anyone forget the Jets preseason hype machine? Is it the unbelievably hilarious and predictable Rodgers flop that ended their season four snaps into week one (despite Allen's nightmare efforts to lose that one)? Oh man, him running onto the field with an American flag. So good.

They did play us tough in 2022 in general, including their 3rd string QB nearly pulling something off on the road in the playoffs. That was troubling. But seems like McD and his D have since adjusted to Miami's mostly scripted first-read attack. And now that their defense has lost mucho talent in the front-7 (to injury and FA)...I think they're even less of a threat than ever.

Allen was an effing beast in that game, and ironically it was HIS bad throw at the end that was the difference.

Miami's only win involved all of these extenuating circumstances. It's remarkable what it takes for the Dolphins to beat Josh Allen.

Gotta be real here: this highlight package is super impressive. Looks like the OBJ that generated so much buzz so long ago.

So was it just injuries, and then (when healthy again finally) being part of a Lamar Jackson offense that diminished his impact? These are Baltimore highlights, but from the look of them, you have to at least wonder, "why aren't there more of these?"

Because Baltimore also has an AllPro TE and TWO first round picks at WR to spread the ball around

Why would they let their OC have major influence? He's their 3rd in 4 years. Under McDermott it's written in stone that we'll have to hire a new OC every 2-3 years because the current one will always eventually be fired or hired away as a head coach. And it's not like McDermott is dictating the long-term offensive philosophy beyond a vague oversight. So any time we add players to the offense it won't be with any particular system in mind. They're going to throw a bunch of low investment guys at the coach and tell him and Allen to figure it out.

A lot of fans have seemingly convinced themselves that small ball, ball control offense has been the plan all along. I don't think that's true at all. I think the personnel investments have forced that to be the only valid offensive philosophy we can use this year. Is it what Brady wants? The guy that coached an LSU offense featuring Ja'Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson? Color me skeptical. But it's the offense he'll get and he'll like it, or else we'll cycle on through to the next offensive coach getting their feet wet.

I do actually think it was the plan all along

I think it's a mistake, but I believe that Brady is going to execute the kind of offense McDermott wants

So let me see...you're frustrated that people are not wallowing in the negative viewpoint end of the pool where you swim 365 days a year on everything Bills related?  Maybe...just maybe...if you were not the one who has like a 100% success right of putting a negative emoticons on every post here that has any positivity to it what so ever and only ever liking ones that support a negative view point others might actually discuss more rationally your view points.

Bottom line is pretty simple with Coleman...if you line him up with a faster corner and just say go deep in a straight line, he isn't going to run past him.  But that doesn't mean he doesn't have the speed to still be a deep ball guy, the speed to get open, the speed to be a great WR1 in the NFL.

He is fast enough and as fast or faster than many of the best WR's of the last 10 years.  Whether he will develop the technique and skills to reach his potential is still to be seen, but there is a reason to be optimistic he will because he has the attitude, the work ethic, the drive, etc to believe he will put in the work to get there.

agree on fast enough, there are a lot of different ways to win your route than just pure fast. understanding leverage and body control vs nfl dbs is at least as important as straightline speed

hoping this kid can pick it up quickly...get adam henry in his ear as much as possible and maybe we found mike evans comp

Unpopular opinion in the NFL world where Mahomes is God but when Kelce was struggling earlier in the season Mahomes looked ordinary. The talking heads kept saying "Mahomes has regressed because he's having to be superman" to which I thought "Allen has to be superman every season, every week and he's better at it than Mahomes".

Then as the playoffs grew closer Reid schemed Kelce open more and Mahomes suddenly looked like the Mahomes of old. Look at the TD against the Bills in the playoffs, Kelce was so wide open Zach Wilson could have hit him in stride, then after he scored the announcers immediately started praising Mahomes and his genius.

i think they were managing his minutes in the regular season tbh

chiefs play above the rim rn

That's the bottom line: whether they're right or wrong, the Bills like someone in the Shorter/Shavers/Hamler/Thompson/Isabella group and feel they have a better shot to contribute this season

that doesn't really make me feel better considering last season they were counting on Sherfield and Harty

i mean at this point it honestly feels like we do this w the WR room every offseason

You have a QB that's a Maserati. He's built for bombs away. But instead of building your offense for that, you build it for plodding, 10 yards at a time max, 10 minute drive offense. So I ask, what is the point?

What's the point of having a guy who's designed by nature to bomb the football deep and whose weakness is dink and dunk stuck in an offensive scheme that is built to do just that?

Why not offload him for someone who's better suited for that kind of thing if you refuse to play to his strengths? That's what I can't wrap my head around. It makes no sense.

the answer imo is that either the QB or the OC (HC if he's an offensive guy) defines the offense

thus far Allen is and has been several orders of magnitude a better QB than whatever OC we've hired. that's why there's never been a consistent philosophy or team building strategy on offense...doesn't matter if it's Daboll/Dorsey/Brady, they add their own unique perspective but the focus is still on maximizing Allen's physical abilities because his talent is so overwhelming superior to their own.

You don’t need an elite QB but you need a QB who’s having an elite season.

i can give you the examples of why this isn't true, but my point was rhetorical anyway

having more excellent players should be the goal. finding reasons as to why they may not be components of certain SB winning teams is missing the point imo

If you're going to evaluate the Bills offense under Brady and not include the two playoff games, you're doing it wrong, simply put. The HAVE to be included for the simple reason that they're the most important games! And they're against playoff teams! Allen had 7 total TDs and zero turnovers in those two games and the Bills averaged 368 yards and 27.5 points yards despite the kicker missing 3 FGs.

The game plan and execution on offense vs KC in the playoffs was Brady's best work bar none. And realistically it could only have been done w a QB like Allen.

I do believe that is the style this team wants to play at this point. Unfortunately as shown by the result even a perfectly executed ball control game script doesn't beat the Chiefs in the playoffs.

Could not disagree more.  Gone are aging/expensive players on the downsides of their careers.  The lone exception was Gabe Davis — who was clearly not a difference-maker for this team.  Spots are opening for young talent to emerge.  Young guys who got off to great starts and are poised to get even better (Bernard/Kincaid/Cook) are now leading the way.

This draft brings a lot of energy and, yes, leadership, to an established franchise that needed something new after just getting to the doorstep for the past four years.

How anyone can say that takes them farther away from a Super Bowl is beyond me.

    Hope youre right👍

I don't disagree with this assessment.

What I ponder is: what exactly were the Bills supposed to do about it, given where they started the offseason?

As you point out, even with some resources expended on lower-tier FA signings, a late 2nd round and a late 3rd round draft pick, it's possible our D won't be as good this season. So were we supposed to use no resources on it, 100% on offense, and have the D just totally blow?  That's not likely a recipe for playoffs or playoff success either.

More, we all know even a top of the 1st round pick has only about a 40-50% hit rate.  So if we mortgage the rest of this year's draft class and next year's to get there, what alternatives does that leave us?

That's really what I want to hear from people on Team Unacceptable WR Room: what would be their plan to fix it?

People have been talking about our lack of investment in wr for several years now

The plan would have been a meaningful draft and FA strategy starting exactly when it became apparent Allen was the guy

I can name some that are the best on their team.  But what defines a # 1 WR is not universal as you can see from answers here.

    Tyreek Hill

    Jefferson

    Adams

    Lamb

    Evans

    Cooper

    Chase

    Brown

    Kupp

    Previously Hopkins and Julio Jones

Guys w the tools to succeed above scheme or QB

Maybe it’s kincaids turn to be that elite TE.  If not this season, soon.

If the defense stays healthy and von doesn’t stink, we just need to execute.

Loved what I saw out of Kincaid last yr but he's still a ways off from best TE of all time conversations

When I say we need a legit #1 guy I mean I think the Bills need it, not that you generally can't win a SB without one. Imo this specific team w all their attributes benefits most from a wideout of that caliber

How many elite WRs did Brady win super bowls with?  Mahomes the last 2 seasons?  The eagles?  I just don’t think elite WRs have any correlation with winning super bowls.

Great QB play+ coaching and defense

I would count gronkowski and Kelce as functional equivalents

The Bills only have 1/3 of your equation come playoff time...that balance has to be made up somewhere
