  1. That might work in Madden but this is real life and Sammy is fine where he is.

Lol so only in madden do teams use their weapons in the slot?! 50x in the slot is not enough. Knowing where Sammy is on the field every play is not the way to use him. Roman did use him in other places but I expect more. We can revisit the moment he passes 50x in the slot bc it will happen.

  2. I don't recall but were his injuries due to hits?? Your are selling Sammy short. You don't take a guy 4th overall and just use him outside. He is much more talented than that. So ur saying Crabtree is more elusive than Sammy. If u read the article u would see that Crabtree was used in the slot 3x more.. Sammy ran 50 routes from the slot and had 6 catches that is not maximizing his talent or the respect he is going to command. There's no denying that. Allen Robinson was in the slot 99x targeted 24x caught 16 avg. 2.36 yards per route run and 234 yds oh and yeah he caught 6TDs ALL FROM THE SLOT....per PFF

  3. You guys are nuts for wanting Sammy in the slot and on screens, NFL linebackers are unforgiving. Keep him outside just don't ignore him for a quarter of the season.

Far smaller players operate in the slot enough without getting injured. It's the NFL. That is not an excuse lol. If you read the article it was about using him open and to create opportunities for others. He is more than a 9 route runner.

  4. Thanks Erik. I expect Roman to be a bit unexpected this year. I mentioned once or twice that that my respect for Roman is pretty high, Those that box him in might be surprised.

I notice you use the logical approach. Which i respect. The past is a good predictor . but not definitive.

If Bills are on the cusp playoff time , I can see G-Ro getting freaky.

Guy has some depth to him

Look at Sammies College tape and tell me you don't want more

Not definitive, but I also think having an overbearing head coach like Harbaugh hurt Roman's philosophy and approach. In 2014, they 9ers wanted more out of their pass game bc they paid Kap and he obviously wasn't ready. I dont think Roman wanted to get away from the run like they did. I believe he has the freedom and trust of Rex to do what he wants and I think that his true creativity is able to shine now, at his pace.

  5. Steelers do this with AB... I agree

    Thank u

A rather knee jerk retort perhaps?

What the heck happened to his college routes ? I do not follow college are much beyond the Bills generally. But many folks posted he was fantastic after the catch guy. Behind the line was something mentioned i thought, Screens, sweeps etc.

The NFL is surely a different animal then College ball with mismatching.

It seems like you expect Roman to move him around more. Have we seen him in the backfield yet? is it coming? Perhaps he and Bush?

Very exciting to consider Roman loosening up and having some fun this year and next

I do expect him to move him around. He did it w Crabtree. It is funny u mentioned screens, as soon as I started doing research on ways to get Sammy the ball I noticed Roman using a lot more WR screens. But that was his final year in SF when he had boldin who is like a RB playing WR. The Bills did pull that out vs the NYJ in week 17. So yes, I do expect more of that as well...

  6. His speed and explosiveness is so need d on the outside with maybe an occasional move to the slot. Even with the new rules, it is still more dangerous for injuries in the slot and better for larger WR, and TE's.

Remember Sammy stretched defenses when TT hits on him maybe twice a game for 80 yards a piece. The short and inside open up. The key is TT hitting on Clay and possibly Dez Lewis or Woods on the inside.

Thats my point, by aligning him in the slot and running him deep it'll cause Lbs to have to carry him to the next zone opening up crossing routes/underneath routes by TEs and complementary WRs...

  7. We'll see. If Spikes can trim down, can he improve in coverage. Against the run he is a thumper. He was a big reason why we dramatically improved against the run, is those run heavy teams will have to rely more on the pass.

Turner, thanks for sharing. I love when guys like yourself add some of these clips to really help educate us. It is appreciated.

No problem! Just trying to show people that the game isn't just decided by one player, play, coach, etc. A lot goes into this game, trying to open people's eyes to other angles that's all!

  8. I love the concept and as always, nice work TurnerE. But regardless of ways to protect LBs in coverage, they have to be able to excel at drops, depths, angles, etc. Better athletes are just more desirable and I have concerns about Spikes' ability in that regard. P Brown less so, but he isn't the most gifted from an athletic point of view, either. I suspect both can compensate with their football smarts and experience, especially Brown. And Spikes has never been in this kind of physical shape, too, so there's reason to believe he won't be as much a liability as he was two years ago.

    GO BILLS!!!

Yeah Spikes is limited in the coverage department but when he was w us in 2014 albeit a different def he wasn't that bad in coverage. Schwartz used a lot of zone matching where the ILBs were asked to play RAT type coverage. In '14 Spikes was targeted 21 times allowed 14 recs for 134 yds o TDs o Ints 1 PD. His problem is that he allowed 84 YAC.. 2013 targeted 27x, 18 recs for 191 yds, 109 YAC..It will all come down to gameplanning, Rex has to matchup well on paper prior to games imo.

  9.

Let's suppose they did that, how much confidence do you have that he'll make it thru the season intact?

You really need to think some more prior to posting. Consider that a constructive criticism.

I'm not saying where or where not Woods did or will line up, what I've said is that he's a classic slot WR. He's not a classic split WR type. He isn't.

Now, if that's true about him not playing slot last year, why do you think that might be? Seriously, don't read further yet, stop and think for a moment or a few moments, and consider our team, and then figure out why that may have been.

    ..........

It was because Hogan is a classic slot WR too, probably even more so than Woods. Hogan played slot frequently and was just as effective, particularly with Taylor throwing vice Manuel.

After that we had Harvin who rode the bench more than he was on the field and useful. After that we had junk as WRs.

    Come on.

If what you said about Woods is true, that he can play all over the field, then he sure hasn't shown us much with 600 yards per season. Far more can and should be expected from even above average WRs that can play any position.

I don't understand why people peg Woods as the classic slot WR, what makes them think that? He is fully capable of being a #2, in a higher volumed passing game. Here are his slot #s prior to 15 (15 can be found in the article) in 2014, Woods was in slot 285x, targeted 37x, 22 recs, 2 TDs, 282 yds in slot 49%-'13 126x in slot, 18 targets, 8 recs, 0 TDS, 90 yds in slot 26% of pass snaps.

My point is that using Sammy in the slot will only make the other WRs/TEs outside of him better because he will bring coverage to his side. That rolled coverage is a lot more difficult to execute bc then the LBs are more involved and you know that is a mismatch. It causes other guys to become open....

  10.

    A few thoughts:

    - Woods played very little from the slot last year; he played mostly from the boundary.

    - Ideally, you'd have a group of guys that can play from multiple spots; it appears that both Sammy and Woods can do that. What they're missing is the 3rd guy.

    - Just because Sammy gets more snaps from the slot, that doesn't mean he gets exclusively snaps from the slot. Even if Sammy's slot snaps increase to match Crabtree's in 2012, that would leave over 600 snaps from elsewhere. The same can be said for Woods.

What the team is really in need of is a 3rd option (or a combination of guys) that can take targets in both locations. For example, they'd like to see a guy like Salas or Little prove that he can be a solid possession guy from the slot, and then have a guy like Lewis or Goodwin prove to be able to garner 4-5 targets/game on the boundary. It can be a platoon thing provided that they mix up where Sammy and Woods line up.

We'd all like to have another bona fide boundary target to compliment Sammy, but for a team with a QB that went 0-5 when attempting 30 or more passes last year, that wasn't a priority in the draft.

I don't want to speak for Erik, but I felt that the point was clear: getting Sammy into the slot will create cleaner opportunities for the others--situations where they won't have to be as good in order to get open.

Thank you and you nailed it with the last line. I don't think people read the article, stats or watched the GIFs. But thats ok, bc that was my point. It'll create opportunities for everyone if they use him in the slot. Which plays to your point, with no number 3 yet, Roman will have to scheme more until someone steps up.

Put him in motion from the backfield, line him up in stacks, and keep the defense guessing whether he'll be the X, Y, or Slot.

That will most definitely create mismatches and dictate coverages.

  11.

OK, we'll bite, then where does Woods, who's a classic slot receiver, play?

Who plays the splits? What, Listenbee, Goodwin, Lewis?

2 Slot WRs and no wides.

I'm curious as to your take there.

Just bc Woods is outside doesn't mean he can't be effective. You can still use him on crossing routes short and to the intermediate part of the field. Put Sammy in the slot and have woods flexed like they did vs. KC where Taylor couldn't hit him for the quick pass. Woods route running is perfect for the slot much like Stevie was in the clips I used in the article, which you may not have looked at.

  12. Slot, slants, screens. Get the ball in your best playmaker's hands as much as possible. He shouldn't just be used as a big Goodwin.

Sammy could easily challenge for best wr in the NFL with more touches (and better health).

Couldn't agree with you more! He can dictate soo much.

The Bills need to line up Sammy all over the field to make it harder to gameplan against him.

Exactly and I think they will.

  13. The Bills will need to find ways to get Sammy the ball more in 2016. Using him in the slot will help the offense produce more through the air. In 2015, Sammy was only in the slot 50 times where he caught 6 passes. Roman used Crabtree in the slot 3x as much in 2011 and 2012. Check out this article. It has film and advanced stats to show that using the #1 WR in the slot could pay huge dividends.

  14. Supposedly Thurman said it's not just a matter of the next guy stepping up, there would be schematic changes with Ragland out for the year.

Rex is paraphrased in the article linked above saying that Spikes is a true Mike linebacker which could limit the team schematically.

They clearly have different strengths and weaknesses but how much would the D need to change schematically with Hawthorne or Z. Brown?

Just means Preston is the Will when Spikes is in but prob Mike when Zach is in. Which does change some alignments i.e. On blitz calls etc. They may have to consolidate the playbook bc of it esp if Preston or the others in general can't handle dual roles.

  15.

What I think is curious is how often Roman used 2 back sets in San Francisco and how infrequently he used them here despite the presence of Felton.

Erik covers this but still a surprise to me.

I said it in my run game series but I believe that he wanted to at the start of the season but he realized Shady doesn't run well having to follow a FB. He likes more zone concepts bc he can create. So he adapted concepts and formations to Shady. Unfortunately, those concepts and formations used the fb less and less. When Felton was called upon he struggled blocking in space.

  16. I honestly am expecting a much expanded role for Tyrod Taylor

Yes....we will run the ball....but I expect more over the middle throws....more working of Clay.....more passing yards all the way around as teams identify us as a "run first run often" team that we were last year.

I expect more freedom for TT as far as audibles etc but I don't think he will be asked to pass that much more often. Teams are also going to work on taking away the deep ball so I don't think it'll be that much easier. As far as TT throwkng to clay over the middle I totally agree I have an article in the chamber for later in the week covering that!
