  1. I watched baseball on TV last night for the first time in about 15 years.

After watching two innings, I turned off the TV, even though I saw some runs being scored.

    Baseball is BORING!

My god, it is SO slow. It's like trying to watch golf on TV.

More than a minute between pitches?

At least in football and hockey, you can hit members of the other team.

I can't understand why all you guys get your panties in a wad over this sport - geez, baseball makes the Bills' offense seem action-packed!

What is it that I'm missing?

  2. Laptop Computer #1 has a dial-up modem.

I plug Laptop Computer #1 into the phone jack at home. I try the dial-up and it does not work with any of the access numbers. Listening on the telephone extension, I hear the standard telephone error message “Your call cannot be completed as dialed – please hang up and try your call again”.

I plug Laptop Computer #2 into the phone jack at home. Using the same dial-up service and access numbers, it works fine. I also try my desktop system at home – works fine as well.

I take Laptop Computer #1 to my neighbor’s house and to the office (using the fax machine line). The dial-up works fine with every access number at both of these locations.

I pick up the home telephone and manually dial the access numbers – they work fine, because I hear the connection tones on the other end.

I can get the dial-up on Laptop Computer #1 to work at home by doing the following:

    - Clicking the “dial” button onscreen to connect (this gives me the telephone error message described above).

    - Unplugging the telephone wire from the laptop, then plugging it back in 5 seconds later.

    - Picking up the telephone extension and manually dialing the access number. Once I hear the connection tones, I hang up the telephone extension. The internet then connects about 10 seconds later on Laptop Computer #1.

So what we have is, Laptop Computer #1 cannot connect to the internet at home, but it can connect everywhere else. But I can connect to the internet at home with my other computers using the same internet service.

Any ideas on the problem and how to fix it?

  4. I have hired over 300 people over the years.

Here's a little trick for you.

Anytime that I have had to hire a "senior" person or a "manager", as soon as they arrive for the interview, I take them out of the office and have them get in their car (with me in the passenger seat) and have them drive along a specific route for an hour - I interview them while they are driving. At the end of the interview, I give them $20 for gas and wear and tear on the car.

    This serves the following purposes:

    1. If they come to the interview immaculately dressed and organized, and the inside of their car looks like a pigsty, then their day-to-day existence in the office will be a pigsty and disorganized.

    2. You will interview them while they are driving (multi-tasking). By them diverting their attention in order to drive, it will be harder for them to give measured responses to your questions, and you will get a lot more honest answers.

    3. I have them drive down highways that are very busy or under construction. By putting them in a "pressure situation", you can see how they respond to these annoyances (just like what happens in a real office).

It's sneaky, but it works 99% of the time.

  5. From AP:

Sammy Sosa was fined one day's salary for arriving late and leaving early at the Cubs' regular-season finale at Wrigley Field.

Sosa arrived 70 minutes before Sunday's first pitch, and he apparently left 15 minutes after the first pitch without putting on his uniform, according to security cameras in the team's parking lot. Sosa told the Chicago Sun-Times he was in the clubhouse until the seventh inning and also said he was tired of manager Dusty Baker blaming him for the Cubs' failures.

''It's certainly inexcusable for him not be at the ballpark and not dressed with his teammates,'' general manager Jim Hendry said.

And his salary is for one day is...

  6. Braves vs. 76ers

    April 18, 1976

    ESPN Classic

Saturday 10:00 p.m. to midnight EDT

    (repeats Sunday 4:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.)

For those of you who may not remember, this is Game 3 of the best-of-3 series which took place in Philadelphia. Bob McAdoo makes two free throws with no time left in regulation to tie the game and the Braves go on to win in overtime.

The only playoff series the Braves ever won!
