It's just classic mythic structure. The thirteen-second game was the turning point and if that game ended differently everything would be different for this franchise. Right now we are living in a Shakespeare tragedy, because of a tragic flaw...terrible coaching decisions, we can not get over the hump. But there is still hope that Josh is our hero and will help us overcome our flaws. There can still be a happy ending here.

    So you're saying there's a chance?

"30 points a game", much like the good to great defenses we've had, is a regular season analysis.

    27 vs the Ravens

    29 vs the Chiefs.

33 was the magic number for the AFCCG.  Mahomes and Reid continually outcoach opposing DC's, and stacked defenses.  If you forget the recency bias of the SB, Mahomes has won the SB ~50% of his seasons.  It doesn't matter what studs you put out there on defense, theyre going to outscheme you, and limit your defenses star players.

Trying to copy Phillys defensive mold would take us throwing everything out, and starting all over again... you can put an All-Pro player at each level of the defense and they'll find a way to scheme that guy out.  We are never outscheming them like that, and we don't have the resources to implement a DL like PHI has, and especially not at the same time as we're filling out the back of our defense to PHI's caliber.  We're miles away.

On the offensive side of the ball, we had a chance to put that game away.  Our defense was -- THE OFFENSE.  Control the ball, score at a high clip, and TD's.  The offense got bogged down one too many times.  Chiefs were able to pu minimum resources to our outside WR's, and sell out to stop the run, protect middle of field against our TE's/Slot.

Adding one bonafide outside threat ( A.Cooper hurt and thrown into the grind mid-season, without TC or a chance to develop chemistry, does not count) into the equation, helps overload Spags' defense and completely alters their defensive gameplan... that game isn't coming down to a 4th and inches (was a 1st on 3rd down anyways).  We're instantly a better balanced team. We sustain more drives, or cap them off with 7's instead of 3's.  Mahomes is forced to play from behind, and unable to make a mistake, or settle for 3.

Bills get to play more loose, take shots deep that hit. Or aren't the end of the world to waste a down on, if the defense cant crowd the line/middle of field.  We can stress a defense with; the run, short throws, medium throws.  There is zero threat deep, or to the outside of the field.

TL:DR  1 single player, a legit #1 WR takes the offense over the top.  Its the only position group on offense where we have no true weapon.

                  VS

Rebuilding an ENTIRE DL & SECONDARY.

^^forget what we've done in the regular season, it doesn't matter.  We had/have a potential 1 player solution to our PLAYOFF problem.  If it's not DK, then package some of our 10(!!! 10 !!!) picks in the draft/trade market to go make it happen.  We have the best QB in the league, and he has 1 WR, who's in the slot

I've been wrong before. If they get DK then I hope I'm wrong again.

If you have this team and the early 90’s teams had both QBs, who starts? It’s a rhetorical question. The gap from Allen to Kelly is as wide as Kelly to who is 3rd.

I'll give you that! But Kelly to his credit has had more clutch game winning drives. I need a little of that Kelly clutch end game performance out of JA. I was confident that JA was going to drive down the field on that last possession and win it this year. Sadly, I was wrong. Go Bills!

I would agree if we were guaranteed landing either Garrett or Crosby.  But those scenarios are not a given.  Then factor in Beane has kinda sucked drafting defensive players. It's basically pick your poison.  Keep trying unsuccessfully to build a D that can stop KC?....or increase your scoring level from 30 to 35? Choose, but you can't have both.

It's not only KC, Rams had their way with us (any good offense did too) and Eagles aren't getting any worse.

If Cleveland is holding firm on not trading Garrett and the Raiders reload with Stafford (thereby signaling they aren't tanking and appeasing Crosby), I think the FO pivots and turns to third on the overall list of big moves and goes for DK.

It doesn't mean they give up on D line, it just modifies the way they go about it.  The big draft capital and money goes to DK and a decent sized FA goes to the D line with a lot of the remaining draft capital going to D.

I'm not the smartest guy out there but our defene is a glarring issue and really needs to be the focus on all levels- DL, DE, LB, CB S.

No but he can make the defense practically irrelevant if he helps us score 35 PPG. Any DT (or any position for that matter) we draft at #30 is not likely to become an elite player. Metcalf is already elite and in his prime. There's no need to overthink it. It's a no brainer if he's available.

It's funny that scoring 30 points a game is not enough. . .. losing in Divisional and AFC Championship b/c you allow 30+.  Defense needs to be a priority, more than enough points

Kelly was in no way better than Allen.  Using Super Bowl appearances is nonsense, especially in the case of Allen and Kelly.   The Bills haven't failed to make the SB because of Allen.

In defense of Namath, it was a very different era.  Actually, the top QBs back then seldom had completion percentages above 55%, and many were below that because they threw so many more "bombs".   My guess is that if Allen or Mahomes or Burrow were throwing many, sometimes most of their passes to WRs 30 or 40 yards downfield, their completion percentages would drop significantly.  Also, Weeb Eubank who coached that SB winning team, and he was probably the best HC the Jests ever had.  After he retired, the Jets sucked, especially on the OL, and Namath got beaten up pretty regularly because there were so many fewer rules protecting QBs.

Both O'Brien and Pennington were pretty good QBs.  I would put them both above Todd.  O'Brien was in the class of 83 with Elway, Kelly, and Marino, so he suffered in comparison -- and the fact that the Jests were barely competitive with the Bills and Dolphins.  Injuries plagued Pennington, but he got the Jests to the playoffs nearly every season that he was able to play all/most of a season.   After the Jests released him, Pennington led the Dolphins to a playoff berth before another shoulder injury ended his career.

I know Bills win bc of JA. Not his fault not getting to a SB, but down 3 with possession and unable to pull it off last two years, just saying.

So using this moronic logic, Doug Williams, Jim Plunkett, and Jeff Hostetler would all be better QB’s then Kelly and Allen.

Love your hot take.  Keep ‘em coming

    Era weighted

    1. Kelly - It truly is a shame the kick went wide right and they never finished after. He was an era defining QB and helped change the position. Allen will pass him soon but he had a great run as the standard and gave so many great moments.

    2. Allen - He is a SB appearance away from leap frogging Kelly. He has done everything else and has the MVP, just one last breakthrough to finish taking the throne.

    3. Kemp - Was a superb QB for the time and won two AFL titles. For the AFL he was one of the two star QBs and they were a game away from playing GB in the first SB

    4. Joe Fergy Ferg! - He was a very good QB that happened to be in the 2nd level of QB starters when Bradshaw/Roger/& Tarkenton where thee guys at the time. In todays terms he was a guy like Dak and with todays playoff back then he would have gotten more press.

    5. Doug Flutie - The two years he was the true starter 98/99 the team was legit and people had major playoff aspirations. He was very good in 98, 99 lukewarm but the team believed in him and I do believe the 99 team makes some type of run had he started in the Titans game.

    6. Tyrod - His play in 2015 was legit good and if Rex didn't destroy the defense they were an 11 win team. Following two years he couldn't match what we hoped but he was still decent and he had a part in killing the drought. Call me sentimental but loved the dude.

    7. Bledsoe - First year great, lukewarm following two years performance wise but he still had some moments in those two years

    8. Fitz - I still think he gets more hype that reality of what he was, but I will say on a talented roster he makes a playoff

    9. Daryl Lamonica - Whoops wish they kept him

    10. Kyle Orton - He was serviceable and threw for 300 yds a few times while almost breaking the drought. He also is better then any QB I can think of in the 11 spot.

Always wanted to drink bourbon with Orton.
