  1. I think that on 4th and long teams know to test Nate Clements

He got beat in the Jacksonville game because he would not knock the ball down

He got beat again today on a 4th and long for a TD pass to B. Johnson.

Although I must say he played a very solid game outside of that.

  2. I'm not sure what all the angst on TSW about Bledsoe's performance was today.  The summary I take today from Bledsoe's performance is that there is no rush to at all to move JP into the starting line-up.

Even if you judge Bledsoe to have sucked today, the bottomline is that this team can beat a bad team in a laugher even with unimpressive (as you kind folks put it) play from our QB,  Why rush JP along before he is fully healthy physically (as folks who demand that he play and play right now do) and why rush him along befiore he is ready mentally (knows and learns NFL offenses and defenses and get his mechanics down) when we can win the way we did today.

Certainly today was at home against a bad team so no one should expect the Bills to win laughers with unimpressive QB play on the road and/or against good teams.  However, full speed ahead with Bledsoe in the saddle against the Jets at home next week and we will see what happens against a better team.

Assuming Bledsoe survives and the Bills as a team play like we know they can and we want them to next week against the Jets, it strikes me as great entertainment and good football to send the Bills to NE and to challenge Bledsoe to step into the belly of the beast and take on BB.

If he survives that game we'll see. If he actually is on a Bills team which wins on the road in NE and comes out of that game 4-5 I think it will be hard for anyone to argue that Bledsoe will be benched and it will be good news for the Bills as a healthy Losman can really focus his time and effort where I perceive he needs to as a rookie which is learning the NFL playbook from reading and videotape and ironing out his mechanics on the practice field getting reps under the watchful eyes of Wyche.

This would be fairly typical of rookie QBs.  This would not condemn Losman to a losing season next year as folks such as Pennington and Vick have demonstrated one can sit as a freshman QB and lead your team to the playoffs your second year.  This would be consistent with the good points JP has shown (you only learn to play at NFL speeds by playing and you learn to be an effective leader by building on the confidence of success), I think his athleticism and leadership qualities are well developed areas in JP so though he must play its not the first priority in his development, and also is consistent with his weaknesses (JP like any rookie needs to learn the NFL and has a rep for bad mechanics like throwing off balance as he ran for his life at Tulane and both of these facets are best learned off field with the books, tape and repetitious practice)/

Rag on Drew all you want. Assessments of his play as unimpressive are great.  We won big time even with a judgment that his play was bad or unimpressive.  This is all the reason a Bills fan should need to let JP take his time and develop at his own speed.

Folks may want him to play now because they want their candy and they want it now (it is Halloween afterall).  I hope he does develop quickly and that he is better than Peyton Manning tomorrow.  However, I have seen enough football to not expect this wishful thinking to come true.

It's fine with me for MM to sit JP for the entire season if he judges him to be not ready physically or mentally to play and develop into our QB of the future. Goes any Bills fan disagree?

BLEDSOE CANNOT WIN ON THE ROAD

  3. Special teams really won the game for the Bills

Brian Moorman was excellent kicking into the wind

Good blocking and good returns in the kickoff and punt game

Good call on the fake handoff on a return

Even Lindell made all his kicks, although his kickoffs leave much to be desired.

Good returns from Nate Clements and Terrance Mcgee

    GO BILLS

  4. Right now educated options would be

Elton Brown OG 6-5, 335 Virginia

Anttaj Hawthorne DT 6-3, 310 Wisconsin

Orien Harris DT 6-4, 300 Miami

Alex Barron OT 6-6, 310 Florida State

Marcus McNeill OT 6-8, 340 Auburn

Michael Munoz OT 6-5, 315 Tennessee

David Baas OG 6-5, 310 Michigan

Jammal Brown OT 6-6, 315 Oklahoma

Andrew Whitworth OT 6-6, 325 LSU

Logan Mankins Sr. OT Fres. St. - Kiper projects him at #24

Tom Donahoe mostly does not like to draft players from the state of Florida so we can pretty much rule those guys out

Althogh I think getting an offensive lineman is more important, I also would not be too suprised if he went with a CB since Nate Clements contract is up after the 2005 seaeson

There is still a possibility the Bills could get a 2nd rounder for Henry.

K Mike Nugent could very well be there for the Bills in the 3rd round

  5. All GMs make mistakes, but the one that hurts us next year was the restructuring of Drew & the signing bonus that hurts us in future years.  The best part of taking on Drew's NE contract was that if we left it alone it gave us time to evaluate Drew this season & activate the buyout on November 1st.  Instead, TD gave him more $ and puts dead space on next year's cap (& possibly 2006 cap if we mitigate it with a 6/2/05 release) When we drafted JP, we had 2 viable options that gave us nothing bad on the cap: Release Drew & take a $0 cap hit.  Keep Drew this year & buy him out in November-he would still finish the season under the terms of the contract -the only thing is we'd have to save $2 million on the cap during the season to do it.  Instead TD took the shortest sighted thing & restructured the contract.  Does anyone think Drew will be back in 2005?

Now after the first paragraph, I'm going to defend TD against those who want to fire him.  TD has made some bold moves which could very well pay off in 2005.  If McGahee gets any more speed back, which he probably will, we're looking at a genuine superstar who TD got at pick 23.  Anyone who sees the way he carries tacklers ought to be impressed, & he's still not 100%!  If Losman is as good as many of us think, he'll be here for the next decade.  TD's 1st draft was excellent, yielding hits on his 1st 5 picks.  Now everyone would have done some things differently than TD, but he hasn't been afraid to draft for the future. Personally, I would have drafted McKinnie instead of Fat Mike, & picked up Anthony Weaver instead of Josh "hands" Reed.  I also would have taken JP at 13 instead of trading away the picks & found a speed receiver through other means.  But overall I think next season will be a great one & all this fire TD talk will be over & done with when he gets a major extension.

    ESPN.com

On another contract front involving a high-profile quarterback, ESPN.com has obtained the figures for the new three-year deal signed by Drew Bledsoe of Buffalo last week, and they show that the team realized a 2004 salary cap savings of $4.18 million by reworking the pact. The three-year contract is worth $18.5 million and drops Bledsoe's cap charge for 2004 from $8.33 million to a much more palatable $4.147 million. Bledsoe, who is coming off the worst season of his career, received a $6.5 million signing bonus. His base salaries will be $2.25 million (for 2004), $3.3 million (2005) and $4.35 million (2006). There are roster bonuses of $1.05 million each for 2005 and 2006. The salary cap charge will rise to $6.5 million for '05 and to $8.316 million for '06, but those are still far less than the cap charges for those seasons under the old contract. As noted here in the past, Bledsoe was due an option bonus of $7 million by Nov. 1 of this year to trigger the 2005-2007 segment of the contract he originally signed with the New England Patriots in 2001. Had the Bills agreed to pay that option bonus, Bledsoe would have been compensated in 2004 to the tune of $13 million and would have earned $25.5 million 2004-2006. But it is very doubtful, given his 2003 performance, that the Bills organization would have made such a huge commitment. Instead, the club likely would not have made the $7 million option payment in November and Bledsoe would have become an unrestricted free agent next spring. That fate, as players like Kerry Collins and Kurt Warner might attest, isn't nearly as attractive as it once might have been. So Bledsoe and the Bills made a mutually beneficial move. Bledsoe will still earn $8.75 million this year, hardly chump change, and the Bills get to keep the 11-year veteran around, probably for at least two more seasons, to help tutor heir apparent J.P. Losman.

As horrible as Bledsoe played in 2003, I certainly would have to say that Donahoe made a mistake with the contract extension. I'm not saying that I totally disagreed at the time of giving Bledsoe an extension but I felt the #'s were too high.

I also liked Anthony Weaver instead of Josh Reed with that 2nd round pick. Although many mock drafts had Josh Reed going in the first round, many mock drafts also had Weaver going in the first round too.

In hindsight it was an extremely bad draft for Donahoe.

    The Awards

Tulane quarterback J.P. Losman collected a host of awards following his senior season with the Green Wave. The California native earned Second Team All-Conference USA honors as well as Honorable Mention All-Louisiana recognition. In addition, Losman was one of seven finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award given to the top senior quarterback.

    The Record Book

Losman set the Tulane career record for lowest interception percentage (INTs per attempt) with a mark of 2.73 (27 INTs in 987 attempts). He finished his career ranked in the Top 10 in 18 categories, including third in TD passes (60), completions (570) and passing efficiency (129.81). In addition, he ranks in the top four on 13 different lists after just two seasons as a full-time starter. He also ranks in the Top 10 all-time in Conference USA in 10 different passing and total offense categories.

    The Stats

Losman completed 251-of-422 passes for 3,077 yards and 33 touchdowns as a senior. He led Conference USA in passing and touchdown passes and his 33 touchdown strikes are the second-highest total in Tulane history. It was just the third 3,000-yard passing season in Green Wave history. In each of the Wave's 12 games, he threw at least one TD pass.

Seven on 7: Seven Quick Notes on #7

    1) Rated as one of top quarterbacks for the 2004 NFL Draft.

    2) Finished his career ranked in the Top 10 at Tulane in 18 categories.

    3) Set the Tulane record for lowest interception percentage.

    4) One of the nation's top senior quarterbacks who has been named one of seven finalists the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

    5) Among the top 10 in the nation with 33 touchdown passes.

    6) Completed 59.5 percent of his throws (251-of-422).

    7) Put on a fourth-quarter clinic vs. Mississippi State to bring Tulane back from a 28-14 deficit. Completed 13-of-17 passes for 146 yards with two TD passes in the last 8:22 of the game and finished the game hitting 29-of-47 passes for 349 yards, four TDs and no INTs.

    Going Deep

J.P. Losman was successful with the long ball in 2003, completing passes of 50 yards or more in five different games. In the season finale against East Carolina, he hit Chris Bush in stride for a career-long 87-yard touchdown pass, the second-longest completion in Tulane history and the fourth-longest in Conference USA history.

    J.P. in Draft Ratings

Losman has garnered plenty of preseason attention of his own as he has been rated at the top of the NFL's scouting service rankings for senior players. Losman and Ole Miss quarterback Eli Manning are projected as the top two senior quarterbacks in the nation. Last summer, Losman was featured in an article in ESPN The Magazine.

    7-11

While Mewelde Moore and Roydell Williams join Losman as the "stars" in the Tulane lineup, Losman had no qualms delivering passes to other players. In 2003, #7 has completed passes to 14 different players. Williams led the way with 66 receptions while Moore came out of the backfield for 39 catches. In addition, Losman found nine different players for touchdowns. Williams registered a team-best nine, followed by Chris Bush with eight and Tristan Smith with five. Moore caught four TDs while Bubba Terranova collected three. Nick Narcisse had a pair of TD receptions, while Carl Davis, Jerome Landry and Fred Smith have caught one.

    Back-to-Back-to-Back-to-Back

Quarterback J.P. Losman joined his predecessors, Patrick Ramsey and Shaun King, as the only TU players to record back-to-back 300-yard passing days in the first two games of the season and then added to the streak with 300 yards in each of the next two games. Losman is the first player to accomplish the feat in the first four games of a season. The record for consecutive 300-yard games is five by Ramsey between Sept. 11 and Oct. 16, 1999.

    Practically New

An impressive aspect of Losman's impressive statistics in 2003 was the fact that he did it with a very young offensive line. For most of the season, Tulane has started an O-line composed of four sophomores and a redshirt freshman in Derek Rogers at right tackle. All told, the five had just 26 starts between them entering the season. Rogers, center Joe Traina and guard Donald Madlock had not started games prior to 2003. Guard Matt Traina (twin of Joe) and tackle Chris McGee both have started 25 consecutive games dating back to the first game of last year.

    J.P. LOSMAN

    Position: QB

    Class: Sr

    School: Tulane

    Conference: C-USA

    Ht., Wt.: 6'2½, 224

    40 Time: 4.71

    Grade: 4.03

    Selected by Buffalo Bills

    Round 1, pick 22 (22 overall)

BIO: Second-team all-conference selection in '03 after completing 59.5 percent/3,077/33/14. Replaced Patrick Ramsey the prior season and passed for 57.4 percent/2,468/19/10. Had a solid Combine and displayed some of the best long-passing skills.

POSITIVES: Nice-sized athletic passer with an NFL arm. Quickly sets up in the pocket, has a short, quick delivery and the pass explodes from his hand. Patient, buys time in the pocket and a tough passer that takes a hit in order to get the throw off. Senses pressure, gets outside tackle and easily eludes the rush, making the throw on the move. Looks off the safety and goes to secondary targets, not forcing the issue or making bad choices. Challenges the vertical game and at the same time makes all the throws. Zips the outs into tight coverage, drives the ball downfield, yet also puts touch on passes when required. Makes plays with his legs and has an aggressive running style when he takes off from the pocket.

NEGATIVES: Throws flat footed at times and as a result will be high of a target. Too often relies on his strong arm to make the play. Holds the ball too long in the pocket and takes unnecessary sacks.

ANALYSIS: A confident quarterback with the tools to back it up, Losman is a physically gifted passer with the ability to play in multiple offensive schemes. Offering a good upside for the next level, he will eventually be a solid productive quarterback in the NFL.
