Whether or not Bills fans agree with its implications, we’re all familiar with the image: Josh Allen on the sidlines, eyes glazed, staring into the distance. I recall seeing it in the horrendous Jaguars game a few years back (in Jacksonville iirc, not the one in England), in his first playoff game against the Texans, and now in back to back playoff games against the Chiefs. It doesn’t happen often, but it always seems to foreshadow a Bills loss.
I love watching Josh Allen play; having watched nearly every game during the drought, I could never say enough about how he has uplifted the organization and the community. I’d argue he means as much or more to Buffalo than any athlete does to their respective team in American sports. He’s the most important individual in the building, and it’s not even close. The issue is, he knows it. He knows about the superbowl losses and the drought, and how desperately Buffalo wants one, just one, Super Bowl victory. And I believe this is what weighs on his shoulders every time I see that absent-minded stare from the sideline.
I’ll always root for Josh; he’s almost beyond criticism, knowing how much he does to win, what he’s already accomplished in his career, and especially for being a genuinely great person and leader. But, when I see that stare, I immediately get the sense that the game is over. We can point to specific plays, bad calls by the refs, poor coaching, or simply talent, but Josh is the unquestioned leader of the team, even more than McDermott, and I think when his teammates see that from Josh, they feel it, and their confidence is drained from it. And the worst part is that it keeps happening against the chiefs in the playoffs, and with each year the pressure is amplified. Although he played pretty well overall against the chiefs, he didn’t display that heroic, game-dominating mentality that was on display against the chiefs in the regular season game. As much as I hate to admit, I felt the Bills would lose last Sunday as early as the first quarter, though I didn’t initially realize why. Now looking back, I am convinced it is the thousand-yard stare that reveals how overwhelming the pressure is to be the savior of the Buffalo Bills.-

I think that video posted early in this thread is telling, where the reporter describes how weak Purdy’s arm looked in practice last Thursday. I’m no doctor, but it just doesn’t seem like something that is fixed in a week, I predict he’s riding the bench on Sunday.

does this only apply to his defense? I imagine it depends on position, but I do recall Edmunds and Benford getting playing time pretty early on, linemen too (though that is a different category). It doesn’t seem to be the case on offense, as Kincaid, Cook, Torrence, Coleman, and Knox got playing time pretty early iirc-

By this are you implying that Bishop has issues tackling? I haven't watched closely, not sure what his deficiencies are.

Is there any specific reason why he's hardly playing? I know he was injured early on in the year, and he did fill in for Rapp when he was injured, but it is strange to me that even local media never mentions him. Is it assumed that he is adjusting to the system, or has he just underperformed? Given that he was a 2nd round pick, I was hoping for a player who could come in and start almost immediately. It's frustrating to see players routinely getting open with space to run, and to my untrained eye the subpar play of Hamlin is a big reason for that. Maybe someone can fill me in if they know something I don't about Bishop's role on the team thus far.

I watched their game against the Jags, and believe me the disparity between the Texans and the Ravens is immense. The Texans o-line played one of the most undisciplined games I’ve ever seen (I can’t remember how many, but there seemed to be a false start on almost every drive), and just barely beat the Jags, who did not look much better than they did last week. Moreover, the Jets lost to the Broncos, whose offense looked pathetic. Of course each team plays differently week to week, and the transitive property can’t predict any outcomes reliably, but based on what I saw from both the Texans and the Jets, I can easily see the Bills taking care of both of them.-

There's a telling quote in this article:
"It's been a nice road," Diggs said. "I look at him as family, not just my quarterback. I'm rocking with him through thick and thin. I always tell him I am with you when you're right, I'm with you when you're wrong."
I wonder if there's a scenario in Diggs' mind where he is, in fact, the one who is wrong. I'd be willing to bet he's going to be negative influence on the sideline/in the locker room at some point this season.

Have you watched him play this year? I'd rather take a late round flyer on someone else than bring him back, he is exactly what we saw in Edwards, Manuel, and to a lesser degree, Tyrod. I can't imagine Beane wanting him back based on his play this year.

Just putting it out there, he's the greatest receiver the Bills have ever had. Reed and TO may have accomplished more up to now, but I've never seen a Bills wideout perform at this level. He's so consistent highpointing the catch that I feel at ease when I see the ball going in his direction, and watching him run routes is like watching Muhammad Ali box.

I'm no scout, but if Cook becomes a weapon for the Bills he has a very obvious nickname lined up: Captain Cook (or The Captain). Same name as the explorer, alliterative, and figurative meaning. Anyway, looking forward to seeing how Josh and Ken Dorsey use his skill set. GO BILLS!!!

The debate of whether it was scheme, line play, or personnel ended when Antonio Williams got a chance to play against Miami. I know it was garbage time, but he hit the hole harder than moss or singletary did the entire season. I trust my eyes, and I was convinced from that game alone that he should’ve immediately been the new rb1

Another detail to keep in mind is the very noticeable fatigue of the defense beginning early in the second half. I can't speak on the x's and o's of what was happening on the field, but the incessant pressure brought on by Henderson and the successive long drives completely gassed the defense (the commentators mentioned it at one point). They are pros, but anyone who's played sports knows all too well how ineffective you are when your body is exhausted. I attribute their breakdown to this more than anything, but perhaps more insightful viewers picked up on other issues.

You seemed to have missed my point. If you play sports or even watch enough of it, you’re probably aware of how important momentum and confidence are. What I was trying to point out is that the immense amount of pressure that Josh is under seems to manifest in these big moments, and that his teammates can surely sense it. Everything that happens on the field is a consequence of what is going on in their minds. that fear of not coming through for thousands and thousands of people looking up to you seems written on his face at times, and understandably so.
