  1. if  only ONE QB is worth drafting in the  first round....couldn't  that  mean MORE D linemen would be  be picked, not fewer?  If you trade down to 12,15 or 20, you have  fewer DL options to choose from  because, as you said, this draft is loaded with DL talent. I wouldn't assume teams  will wait on impact players dropping to them. Beane claims he will go BPA. If Bills take Hockenson at #9,and want a DT, they have to take someone like Tillary in the 2nd. If they select Oliver , Wilkins, Sweat,et.al at #9, they could maye get Irv Smith in the  2nd, possibly wait for Josh Oliver or Knox? So which combo ,overall, has more value? Hockenson/Tillary or Oliver/Smith?

The gist is that teams should draft a high QB even when they have a good one/franchise type.   Not only does this give a backup and safety net for the present starter, but also does the following, I think.  You keep the newbie for a few years and he becomes somebody who has learned the NFL game and has increased in value.  You then can trade him off for a good draft pick return and get a great return on your investment.   That doesn't make sense for the Bills right now but I wonder if a reason for having Anderson and Barkey on the roster might be for their value for a mid-season trade to a team that had a QB injury?

I don't see Barkley or Anderson being traded mid-season; but, adding a QB will happen one way or another; need 4 for training camp. Anderson has to prove he can play; if the #4 guy outplays him, Bills might move on from Anderson. I dont think he will have have much trade value. As to developing a QB; Bills want to maximize production and value before a rookie deal expires.  dont want to develop a guy into an effective NFL QB and then lose him. Beane could surprise by picking a QB, but i think a more likely scenario is he signs a young  QB who has at least been exposed to the NFl and has PS eligibility.

Whether Beane trades down or stays put I can see him bundling some picks to move back into the end of the first to nail his 2nd must have.   With the depth on defense in this draft there will still be huge difference makers available late first early second so it will warrant the move.

Preference is trade back get Hock, trade up with the extra second or 3rd and get best DT/edge available.  Draft OT, LB and RB with whatever is left.  We have enough duct tape on this oline to justify grabbing your franchise tackle next year and not this year.  Just my take.

per the Old" draft pick chart, Bills 2nd + 3rd (720 points) = a later 1st (26-32),so yeah, Bills could afford it. At this point, with  70 guys already on the  rster, 10 picks doesn't seem "necessary" but they have  value; whether you keep  them ,trade up,trade down, or trade for future picks.

  4. Bills 7 late round picks (4th through 7th) have a total value of 197 points. The equivalent of a mid-third round pick.  Some of the trade-up proposals I see are outrageous. I CAN see picks traded for veterans on expiring contracts, for example, but all this "trade a couple 4's  for a 2nd" are wishful thinking.

I am an all-knowing soothsayer.  These were not random dart throws.  These are players that Beane and company feel will make us a much better team.  I think they actually have too many players now.  But that is an opinion, not a fact from an all-knowing soothsayer.

Dawkins, Spain, Morse,Feliciano and Waddle/Nsechke. Bodine and Long provide experienced interior depth, in case Morse gets hurt. Bills  liked Sirles enough to  re-sign him. Teller got some reps but ideally would have been on the PS. McDermott and Boettger are PS material. Cant believe Ducasse is still around. i can see them drafting depth for the future.

I have not seen anything about it here, and he is still listed on the Bills' official site roster. However, his Wikipedia page lists his as a free agent as does the Bills' depth chart on Ourlads. Hmmm.

    "Official" site?

  7. All your numbers are giving me a headache, but I'll ask a question. Did you note  how many WRs and TEs were PICKED  in each round? Since MORE TEs are likely drafted in the  3rd than the first, why are you so  surprised that more of the "top"  or "elite" TEs came from the 3rd? Did you calculate the % of ERs or TEs drafted in a particular  round are consider "top" or "elite"? i.e.you numbers  indicate which round a 'top" or "elite" ERE/;TE is picked in....take into consideration something like ";what % or WR's  taken in the 2nd round will eome "top"or 'elite"

  8. What about Sirles and Teller?  You can delete Boettger and McDermott ; they hardly had any snaps, certainly not statstcially significant. I wont accept these numbers at face value so i might look them up myself.

Ironically, you are referencing PFF; They named the Bills O Line one of the FIVE MOST IMPROVED position groups after free agency.

I’m going to a hypothetical scenario to express my point. I realize that contracts can be manipulated so the length of them may not really come into play. Beane signed a bunch of players this off season and in FA. They range anywheres from 1-4 years, I think only 1 or 2 was for 4 years (Morse & Beasley?) but most were shorter term.

Here’s the hypothetical, let’s say the Bills were to trade for Stefon Diggs (current contract is for 5 years that he signed last year) and either the Bills keep that contract or re-sign him for a new 4 year deal and then were to draft someone like K’Neal Harry either late 1st rd or in the 2nd rd, would that be a way of putting a competitive team on the field presently while grooming the future replacement? I’m not saying that Harry would be the direct replacement for Diggs but I would have to think that Diggs would be the #1 WR. John Brown is 29 years old and was signed to a 3 year contract and his forte is speed. While if Brown played out his contract he’d be one side or the other of 32 years old and one would have to expect his speed to diminish. Enter Harry. He could be the Peerless to Eric Moulds type of compliment. In a couple of years after that could Harry then be the replacement for Diggs?

This is just not regulated to the WR Corp neither. Beane seemed to put a lot of 1 or 2 year contracts out there as well in other position groups. Is this a way of keeping a steady stream of good players flowing all the while of managing the salary cap between veteran and rookie contracts?

Tipster; check out "Spotrac" or " Over the Cap" to see contract details. I think Bills have an "out" with Brown after 2019; possible both he and Diggs 'salaries are only guaranteed for 2019 (I could be wrong). Cutting a guy before  the contract expires can cause a significant dead cap hit.

  10. I dont think you grasp the concept. In a recent article, Beane said that last year,he needed a QB and had to trade up to get one. He felt Allen was good value ,worth the picks, and ,yes filled a need. If Bills had stayed at their original spot (21?)and drafted a QB because they NEEDED a QB, that is "drafting for need".  But the QBs still  available at 21 were not worth the #21 pick so,a bad value. But,lets say the top rated Center or pass rusher or other good VALUE player was still there in other words, "best player available", regardless of position or team needs.

This is what the Bills get this year:

    1st - 1
    2nd - 1
    3rd - 1
    4th - 2
    5th - 2
    6th - 1
    7th - 2

Likely the first 4 rounds picks all make the team. Assume one from the 5th and one more from the 6th and 7th. That is 7 rookies or 13% of the 53 man roster. Imagine trading down in the first for a 1st and a 3rd. Throw in a undrafted rookie and your up to 9 or 17% of your roster. At some point, and I don't know what that point is, the inexperience becomes a liability especially early in the season. IMO, they would be much better served if they traded down and got future draft picks. For example instead of a 1st and a 3rd a 1st and next years 3rd.

Bills had a lot of 1st and 2nd year players on the roster. With all that cap money available, I dont see the need to stockpile draft choices just to fill out the roster. Beane will fill needs in FA and bring in talented rookies. i dont think he cares whether he gets a DT, OT or Edge, etc. at 9,a s long as ti is a "good value" pick, BPA
