He might be yesterday's coach, but he is a winning yesterday's coach ! Stop and thing what he brings. We need new QB's. Who is going to develop them? We need a proven winner to bust though our culture of losing.
Holmgren didn't bust through Cleveland's culture of losing. Why would our situation be different?

There's a YouTube video a couple pages back that has Kelly saying something along the lines of needing to design the offense around the players you have. He said he would run a power I system if his players fit that. Kelly will adapt his system according to the roster by all indications.
If the Bills hire him and he's successful, nobody would be happier than me to admit that I was wrong. I just don't have a good feeling about him as a head coach and he obviously won't come as a coordinator.

Bengals over Texans
Packers over Vikings
Ravens over Colts
Redskins over Seahawks

The Bills are going all in on Chip Kelly tomorrow. If he's not our new coach by Saturday, Lovie will be by Monday, imo.
Please, then, get me to Monday.
I don't think Kelly's style will work well with veterans over the college players he has today. I'd hope that anyone coming in would be hired as a head coach and not also a coordinator for either the offense or the defense.

Yesterday's "baby". I can't live on it anymore.
You always love your "babies", no matter how old they get. I saw it in NYC on my girlfriend's tv. I made her stay with me. We're celebrating our 20th anniversary later this year. I've seen two replays in the past 20 years and I still get worked up as though it is a live broadcast. Someone should show that game tonight.

I wondered this also.
No offense but saying so isn't good enough. And be nice.
Good stuff.
The most salient question is this:
If he were cut and became a free agent, would he want to sign with a team where he is viewed (again) as a temporary starter to keep the seat warm for a highly-drafted quarterback of the future?
Because at this point he knows how the league works and he has something to prove. If he plays well, then the pick sits. Not every coach does what Harbaugh did (most don't).
-
I'd be fine with Alex Smith on a 2 year deal to keep the seat warm for whatever QB we take in Rd 2 (after getting the best LB in RD1)
Exactly this.
-
Lovie Smith should be target #1. Get a FA QB like Alex Smith and draft a QB in round 1 or 2 and focus the rest of the draft on defense. Maybe the AZ defensive coordinator for that side of the ball. Smith is a guy who has won more than he has lost. He's looking at us and would take the job. He has won with middle of the road QBs and a really inconsistent offensive line. We will be in the playoffs next year if we do this. I say Alex Smith because he does not turn the ball over and we could focus on running first. He would be an upgrade over what we have now and he has something to prove at this point in his career.

You can actually set your clock by the late game interception.

In true Bills fashion they would make the playoffs in year 6 of the new lease. Then win the super bowl in LA the following year.
Colorado Avalanche won the Cup their first year after leaving Quebec.
-
Playoffs in 3 out of the next 4 years.

I say go for boom/bust then. Who really wants to settle for another game manager? And if you want that type of player why not hit free agency with someone that has already shown what skill sets they have?
San Fran has both of these guys this year and they have both played well and won games. I would get the game manager in FA and still pick a boom/bust guy (or even one in round one and in round three). I think the Bills are likely to keep Fitz as the game manager and make a boom/bust pick, especially if Chan stays next year. With a new head coach that might change.
-
As soon as I heard the news about the new lease, I thought about all the posters here who say that they won't give Ralph another dime until he upgrades the team. I figured now those people can really stay home and listen to blacked out games on the radio until the team starts to win. It does put pressure on the team to upgrade, at least in the short term, until "year 7" draws closer. If I still lived in town, I would go to the games regardless of their talent or record, but I see the other side of the coin (no pun intended).

Isn't it more important to check out the losses to teams that had losing and .500 records? Those are the demoralizing season killers.

Ok. I'm trying to stay from this thread but I just can't hold it anymore.
FWIW, I agree that continuity is the better way to go. I agree that Chan could probably do much better with a better QB leading the team. I agree that with the defense either continuing to improve with what we've got, or with a new DC and a few more pieces he'd be better. And I agree that no real coach would want to come to this sinking ship of a franchise.
However, here's a few things that should be clear why we want Gailey to be fired immediately.
-regardless how bad the QB position is, Chan has refused to run the ball more. The inability to utilize Freddy and CJ more as our offenses best weapons.
-the horrible time management, player management, gametime decisions, and inability to get this team into the winning mentality.
-regardless if the defense is not his thing, he hand picked his DC. He still refuses, no matter how bad, to speak of the unit. Your the HC, you must have accountability.
-even if we did manage to get the best young rookie QB in the draft, does anyone really think he starts over Fitz? Chan has married himself to Fitz and it should be his demise. Also, even if the QB was picked up, do you really trust Chan as the one to coach him? I sure don't.
-no matter who the next HC is, he's gotta be better than Chan and his 15-33 record.
At the end of the day, we could have all the weapons in place and Chan would still make the wrong personnel decisions on game day. Would still make all the wrong play calls in game day. Would still be a losing coach.
That's all I have to say. I have no faith in Gailey. If he's here, ill still be buying season tickets because I love this team. Because I love the NFL experience. But I have no hope for this team until Chan is gone as our HC or he proves me wrong and were playing in January.
Well said.
I also agree that continuity is extermely important and I think that the only way to have a shot at the playoffs next year is to keep either Fitz or Chan, but not get rid of both. That will set everything back another 3 years. I think Nix should stay until the draft while Whaley looks for a head coach and an OC. Then Whaley takes over while Nix retires. Pick the next QB in the draft and sign Levitre and Byrd and Leodis. I think everyone believed we had most of the pieces in place at the beginning of this year and I would like to see what we could do with this group and someone different calling the plays and running the games. At least that's what I would do.
-
I am just afraid that the Jets somehow wind up drafting just before us and taking the QB that we want. That's the only reason why I want them to win tonight and next week so we can beat them on the 30th and not worry.
-
That Tebow series was pathetic. Then Sanchez comes in and throws a pick. Wow.
-
I just want a coach that has some fire. Somebody that will get in Carroll's face after a punk move like Sunday. Someone who will be quotable. If we suck at least we'll get something interesting. Not an Andy Reid type. Is Kevin Greene ready for the big time? What about Mike Tice--ready for another shot?
Sounds like a description of Hank Bullough.
-
Personally, I would rather have a pocket passer with a good strong arm and accuracy first. The legs part of it helps, but one day when (1) the league's defenses catch up to the read option, or (2) your QB is getting too beat up, then you're going to need to be able to sit in the pocket and throw the ball well.
-
to simplify my take in playoff contention = win not in playoff contention = wins don't mean much, season's already shot
root on if you want....i go the disgusted with chan/fitz/aaron williams route. clean this house and draft that qb.
I think that if you get rid of Chan and Fitz both then you it will take another couple years to get to the playoffs. You won't care about too many games for the next couple years. Seems to me that this team wins in spite of whatever Chan does to prevent them, while Fitz only throws a couple games away per year. And Fitz only throws so much because of Chan.
-
If you're only looking at the draft to make the team team better, then losing out is probably a better way to go, although they still need to make a good pick wherever they are. But I think they also need to re sign their free agents and attract new free agents to upgrade talent. They can't just get it in the draft. They also need to get a better head coach. The more games the Bills win will make it more likely to (1) re sign their free agents (2) sign new free agents and (3) get a better head coach.

I agree with everything you've said, except the bold portion. Have you read the game day threads this season? Aside from that, I think the fact that the Bills have a lot of options more than one option for a head coach is a huge improvement over three years ago and a nice first step..
