  1. I'll assume that is the reality, and if so, excellent. I don't know if I like fully guaranteed rookie contracts.

so says Fox Sports (AP). Is that you JW?

The Buffalo Bills signed rookie quarterback EJ Manuel to a four-year contract worth $8.9 million on Friday.

The team announced the signing, and a person familiar with the deal revealed the terms speaking on the condition of anonymity because the Bills did not release any details of the contract. The person said the contract includes a $4.84 million signing bonus.

  2. The bolded statement above is pure, unadulterated conjecture on your part. Why anyone would believe a QB competition is conducted and/or completed based upon non-contact practices in helmets and shorts is beyond me.

Some believe, as you, that the "rep count" indicates who the staff believes is "more ready" to play. Others believe they are just giving Manuel less so as to not overburden him as he learns the system. Still others believe the staff knows Manuel is a given, so they are giving more reps to the vets in an effort to see who is picking things up more quickly. The bottom line is nobody knows, and we won't until training camp and preseason are upon us.

The clear trend is to start 1st round QBs immediately. It would be the exception, not the rule, for Manuel to sit.

I thought I clarified "more ready based on rep count" as IMO; of course it's pure conjecture! Did I even hint that the QB competition is conducted or completed in OTAs? I don't think so, and I certainly didn't mean to.

I don't have any stats, but there's not many instances (again IMO) where a coaching staff sits their perceived best player (especially if he's a rookie), and consistently gives more 1st team reps with the 2nd and 3rd tier vets to see who is picking things up quicker. The less-reps-so-as-not-to-overburden-the-rookie? Possible, but the only way he's gonna learn is by taking reps, if you buy into the trend.

You can argue about the trend, and clearly the most talented rookie QBs will see the field, compared to the watch-and-learn strategies of the past. However, they have to first prove that they're the best option, especially since the current CBA has eliminated the historically exorbitant rookie contracts.

Of course there's a lot of camp ahead and preseason games to be played, EJ could rise to the top, and I hope he does. I'm just saying, based on the current snapshot, rep counts and press conference quotes seem to indicate where they're at right now.

I do agree with your statement that nobody knows.

  3. Has there been anything said as to why Green was cut by the Pats? According to teh article he's started 28 games the past 3 seasons.

    Boston Herald says

Green, who started 13 games last season for the Chargers, didn't receive any guaranteed money when he signed a couple weeks ago, which was surprising given his starting experience. He also had a $10,000 weight bonus built into the deal, so the Patriots were clearly concerned about the interior lineman's conditioning.
  4. Obviously running around in shorts in OTAs don't say a lot about who is winning the QB battle, and a lot will change by the end of preseason, but based on pure numbers of reps, it appears that the coaching staff believes KK and TJ are "more ready to start" than EJ at this juncture.

This is not about how TJ might've led the 1s today, followed by KK, then EJ, with tomorrow KK gets the 1st team, followed by EJ, and then TJ, etc. Every time they count off the reps, it's KK and TJ getting the bulk of the work, and EJ getting considerably less than the vets. If you combine that with EJ's confidence with the playbook (his words, inferring it's not the terminology or complexity of the scheme), quotes from the OC and HC that EJ needs lots of work, and "he's farther ahead of any rookie QB, compared with other teams that I've been associated with" (true, but not a glowing endorsement), tells me that it's more likely one of the vets will be under center on Sept 7th.

EJ could kill it in TC and the preseason, and be given the keys for the opener, but IMO the coaches think he needs more grooming. Of course injuries and poor vet play at the start of the regular season could move up EJ's debut...

  5. here's an article from 2009 on the SB Nation KC Chiefs page, about EP's holdout history, and the perceived winners.

What's interesting is that, at least according to the writer in 2009, EP (and therefore, his client) either won or considered a draw in every holdout, except the Jason Peters/Bills situation, where he declared the Bills as winners.

You're the agent of the #3 overall pick and you negotiate more money than the #1 pick, who was a quarterback (Eli Manning) no less? Eugene Parker is a shark of an agent.
  6. Is there any indication that the back is at all related to the week 1 prognosis? Everything I've read is all forearm with the back just being an offseason tuneup

as Stephania points out, the hope is that rehab will happen concurrently with the forearm and back, but as Ian Rapoport says in a recent report, they just don't know the extent...

Clearly, there is uncertainty. The team does not know how bad Gronk's back is. And with his forearm healing for another two months at least, it might be time to start moving back his timeline. Ready for training camp? Seems like a long shot, in my opinion.

Think about it. Gronkowski hasn't been able to work out and lift like he's wanted. And with back surgery possibly looming, he likely won't for a while. Maybe it's time to turn the focus to a possible stint on the physically unable to perform list and a midseason return. Thinking of this situation in those terms might help for all parties.

  7. Detailed analysis by ESPN's Stephania Bell regarding Gronks injuries and surgeries, along with his chances to be ready for the season opener.

This is still very much an evolving situation for the young star tight end, and there will be much more to watch for as the summer progresses. The optimal scenario would have Gronkowski fully healed and ready to start the 2013 season on time. While not impossible, it certainly does not seem likely.

Everything would have to happen perfectly from here forward, and the road has been anything but perfect thus far. A more likely scenario would have Gronkowski joining the team at some point after the season has begun, but it is too soon to say just when that might be.

While the Gronk is tough as nails, I think the telling story is how his medical staff will want to avoid re-injuring his forearm, and limit the danger of serious damage to his back, so IMO, he'll be on the PUP list for the season opener, or at least held out the 1st game or 2.

  8. interesting article from Pre-Snap Reads about what DM's offense could look like...

If Manuel proves he can run the typical offense consistently, then this just becomes another color of the Iguana offense that defenses would have to expect, but couldn’t really prepare for. Defenses can prepare for the option and contain it, but when it’s one of 20 or more different directions the personnel on the field hints at going it, it’s very difficult to set yourself up to stop that and expose yourself to a standard drop-back pass, because that standard drop-back would then have a dramatically slower pass-rush threatening it.

The potential layers and adaptability of the Bills’ offense for the upcoming season is terrifying if the quarterback position can figure itself out.

Unfortunately for Bills fans, that same “if” has never fallen in their favor in recent times.

  9. Or just maybe she's not quite the b*&%$ the original report made her look like...Just maybe a man with mega-millions could be in the wrong too? Like...maybe a guy who just singed an $100 million dollar contract wanted to be free to do whatever he wanted to do despite his engagement and promises? Because that certainly never happens...Right? Well...admittedly they do usually marry them first...So I'll give Mario the nod there...At least he was man enough to break it off before he married her...

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with breaking off a relationship that is not working either...But if you're going to file a suit like Mario did you best be ready for the other side of the story...Boys will be boys...There's nothing wrong with what Mario did...But deciding to drag this girl through the mud publicly afterwards may come back and bite him big time in the court of public opinion...

Just love to hear the Neanderthal view on things...Always realistic and well informed...

turns out she has a side, and might be able to prove it

They reconciled in June and Williams returned the ring to Marzouki.

In August, she moved to Buffalo to be with Williams.

Williams broke off the engagement several more times, according to the counter-claim, but never asked for the ring.

"A part of Williams wanted to be married and start a family, while another part wanted to continue to live the life of a wealthy bachelor who could do whatever he wanted, with whomever he wanted, whenever he wanted," according to the counter-claim.

"Williams made it abundantly clear, in writing, to Ms. Marzouki and several others that he wanted her to keep the ring," the claim states.

  10. Yes, every LB should be able to cover and play the run. The coaches are emphasizing positional versatility this offseason. We know he's great as the 4-3 MIKE. Now what about playing inside in the 3-4 or 3-3-5 and how well can he play it?

KD never played IL in a 4-3 before the 2012 season, here is a decent article that discusses his transition to the 4-3 last summer.

Can he play inside in a 3-4? Pretty damn good!

  11. Mayock doesn't think Smith is a good fit in Buffalo, having seen him play a couple times in cold weather

From a value perspective, I don't think Geno Smith makes sense in Buffalo...

...If it's not him, do you want Matt Barkley or Ryan Nassib or EJ Manuel at 8? That's way too high, for me.

He goes on to say that Buddy won't wanna give up his 1st to get his QB, that he'll more likely be willing to give up a 2nd or 3rd...

  12. Their weapons are a joke. Period. The ones that landed and the ones that got deflected. If they weren't, the media would be constantly shoving that footage in our faces.

they're shooting BM-21 Grad missiles that are 122mm, carry 6.4Kilos of explosive, and are spit out of a 40-tube launcher. It was built by the Russians in the 60s, but definitely not a joke.

Iron Dome is popping some, maybe a lot, but to poo-poo this type of rocket as some kinda homemade bottle shows you really don't know much about this particular thing...

  13. Once again, Reality vs Rhetoric. You love to accept and embrace the rhetoric.

Those were bottle rockets. They caused bottle rocket type damage. If they weren't many more people would've died.

BTW. I'm referring to the rockets that actually hit. Not the ones taken out by the Iron Dome missle defense system.

so Grads and Qassams are bottle rockets? If you're saying that Iron Dome is picking these up, partly, but not all.

  14. Romney is a moderate who said whatever he needed to say to get the nom. Huntsman would have had to do the same or not go anywhere. And rich is rich. Barry and his henchmen would have delved into Huntsman Corp. and found dirt, and portrayed Huntsman as a silver spooner.

maybe, but a silver spooner isn't a corporate raider, and I'm not making judgements either way. Of course they would've gone after him and his family company, but they'd have to find a very different way to win against someone like JH Jr.

And his positions on issues like immigration and gov't stimulus (amongst others) take away quite a few arrows from their quiver. Just saying it would have been a very different campaign and perhaps a lot closer.
