1. I heard she was doin' the keyboard player.

Donna Jean Godchaux-Mackay is still singing in the Heart of Gold Band along with the son she had with Keith. Before she joined the Dead, she was a background singer for Elvis, Etta James, Boz Scaggs, Neil Diamond and others. Hard to believe she could sound so awful at times. But I am sure the drugs and alcohol didn't help.

One favorite memory of a Dead show was when Keith was toasted and hunched over his piano just plink-plunking on one note and Jerry came over and gave him a stiff kick in the ass. It didn't help much and the roadies helped him off during a space jam and he returned more focused a bit later.

  2. Roger Waters leaving Pink Floyd. I love all that is Floyd, even "Momentary Lapse of Reason," and "The Division Bell,"  but it is not the same.

    205826

Very true...but those latter two are so disappointing to me that I don't have them. Waters wrote 90% of their music and he wanted to pack it in even before The Wall came out. Instead he booted Wright out of the band. Waters defines the embattled, tortured musician. But I read a recent interview and he has mellowed somewhat after the protracted legal battle with the rest of the band. But I don't believe you will ever see him and Gilmour having tea and crumpets together.

I won't be surprised if TheMadCap chimes in on this, too.

  3. I can understand everybody's concern with IT outsourcing but oursourcing is not limited to IT and impacts nearly every aspect of the economy. Everyone is looking to cut costs. Sorry to see that you had a bad experience.

I own a software development shop in the US but my staff is in China (I used to work in Shanghai for a large US corporation).

But none of our jobs has been to replace people here in the states. In all cases, either there was not enough IT staff to perform the development or web designers did not wish to do the coding. The latter preferred design work over programming. We are a temp agency for software development.

There are certain functions that are difficult to offshore in IT, such as operations, but they can outsource or "re-badge" (EDS, IBM, etc.). I will give you my perspective of where IT offshoring, for the most part, is headed. If I were a US IT software professional, I would look to become a software design or architecture person. Designing and creating the specifications for an application are parts that companies want to keep "in house". Then passing them off to whomever performs the development and monitoring and checking those deliverables in the production environment are also important "in house" functions.

Just like foreign firms in Asia have become the producers of a great number of physical commodities for the US (and other nations), so will the production of software follow a similar vein. The US firms have become the so-called "brains" behind the design of products and the Asian firms are the "brawn". I have made generalizations and there are certainly exceptions to what I have stated but the world is getting smaller and certain adaptations are necessary.

  4. It's good to hear that - congrats - and keep going, you'll do it.

I dropped 25 lbs three years ago and have not gained it back. I did not use the fad diets, instead I exercised more, cut back the amount of food, and dropped snacks.

Now, my diet has morphed into one that is low on fats, protein, salt, and sugar and uses low glycemic index complex carbs (rye/pumpernickel/grain breads, oatmeal, spinach pasta, etc.), fresh veggies, and fruit. Sure, I still have wings, pizza, and a Zweigles but that is an exception relegated to some Sundays. My cholesterol is 25% lower and I recently ran a 7:08 minute mile. In my mid-forties, I am pleased with that but my goal is mid sixes.

Eating healthy is not too difficult at home but presents a challenge when you go out. But once you understand caloric and diet nuances, you can find something on a menu that tastes good and is relatively healthy.

It can be done solo but it helps if your partner is into the weight loss thing and healthy diet modification. My wife is also athletic and in amazing shape and has adapted her cooking to this healthy diet. She didn't need to lose weight but wanted to eat healthier. Another impact is that my children look to eat healthy, too. They will eschew a pastry and select a fruit. The veggie selection is still limited for them but they always like fresh carrots and broccoli.

If you're inclined, get a book from Border's or Barnes and Nobles by Birnbaum.  A good idea is to stay at a Disney property (they have "All Star" Sports, Music, Movies, and Pop Century for $77/night usually) because everyday you get to get into a park an hour earlier than non-Disney guests.

And if you check out Epcot, and you should, make sure you visit Ice Station Cool.

    200702

I agree with staying at a Disney property because it is so convenient. But waiting for the buses in the morning and evening can be a pain. My .02 - pick a location (Epcot, Animal Kingdom, etc) where you will go for a day and get up early and drive there right before it opens. You will get a fairly close parking spot and will not have to wait for the buses going there and coming back. Since you are staying in Disney, parking is free at their parks. For about the first 2 hours in the morning, we (kids and us) were able to get in the popular rides without waiting. And read the nuances about using Fast Pass. Once you get the hang of it, use it to get on a ride right away when the lines are 2 hours long.

  6. Should be a great game in a great city ! Bob or any other takers interested in organizing a TBD party here?

    200649

Wow - this is another monumental decision in 2005, go to SD or NO? The last SD trip was a hoot. Parts of the trip to Tijuana are still in remission but I remember Cipro being sold everywhere "We have Cipro - No prescription required" because of the anthrax scare. That was Halloween weekend and we dressed up at the tailgate party in rubber football masks with Buffalo horns. But the painted breasts in Bills colors (who was that?) at the tailgate was the best "costume". It was nice to meet up with some of the regulars here - Bob Lamb, AKC, Hardy, Jay, and others. Found out that Steve Christie is quite the partier.

  7. i designed a very bisc website for a firend of mine... she thinks its great - but it's really very simple. i have dabbled in web design a little - but only at the very basic end - just cobbling together graphics and text with lots of white space to make it look funky :w00t:

I reckon I am a pretty basic level. i know enough Javascript to get me thru some tricky spots, but can't author much...

now comes a request froma friend for me to have a look at a site of hers to have a go at enabling the site for e-commerce. bugger. i'm not sure i know where to start. anyone got any advice (other than get a professional!!) or know of any good easy ways to make e-commerce happen?

I think i'll have a lot of qns about this - so a PM might be better.......

    200926

    Nick,

If she wants to get things moving on her site and a professional impression is important to her, it might be best to have someone experienced with e-commerce enable it for her. Then you could look at the source and add some things, enable others, etc. If there is no quick desire to have this up, I suggest you look at some books by Jennifer Niederst.

I own an off-shore company (but, then you are already off-shore), Chone, LLC, that does software development. Mostly, we augment staff or perform the actually coding for web designers.

I'll send you a PM with some of our costs. I can guarantee you that you will not be able to find better talent at a better price.

By the way, don't know how much international calling you do but have you checked out Skype? It's the rage in Europe & Asia. I call and teleconference my staff for free using it.

    Tony

  8. It's a balanced article you can read later in the morning on the front page. Gives Bledsoe his props. But his reasoning is this...

" Bledsoe's preformance in the seasons biggest game was like a two-by-four to the head, a jarring reminder of his shortcomings and his tendency to become unglued at the most inopportune times. "

" In the end, he will always let you down. In a big game, he will make throws that will leave you scratching your head. He will hold onto the ball too long. He will fail to sense an oncoming blitzer, and imminent disaster. "

" It's true no one knows what to expect from Losman But we've learned to expect the worst from Bledsoe in big games. Sunday was the latest example. If the Bills expect to win a Superbowl with this guy, they're kidding themselves. "

He predicts Bledsoe will enter 2005 as the starter and Losman needs to get himself ready this off-season. Suggesting the transition could occur during the 2005 season. That's a valid assumption. I believe Bledsoes' cap hit is about 6.5 Mil next year, jumping to 8.3 Mil in 2006. I seriously doubt he'll ever see that $$ for 2006.

*Additional note - Our non-divisional Away games for 2005 are Oakland, San Diego,Cincinnati, New Orleans and Tampa Bay . Home games include Denver , Kansas City, Houston, Atlanta and Carolina.

    192010

I can't believe the Bills would consider using Bledsoe as a marketing tool this offseason for season ticket sales. If they did, there might be a decline in sales. Marketing's gotta be on Willis and Evans.

Tough situation for MM and TD - good team core but do you stick with Drew or give an unproven and untested JP the helm? I am sure the lack of performance by DB in big games and against good defenses is not lost on them. I guess they keep hoping that he'll break out of the funk. I am not going out on a limb by saying this but I think JP and DB will be splitting time with the first team in mini-camp and pre-season though DB will be the "official" starter. I guess we'll see where it goes from there. But, my sources also tell me that JP better become a "student" of the game and not simply believe that his talent will do it for him.

  9. Air Borne the product

Anyone who is feeling like a cold coming on. Try this stuff fantastic. Worth the money.

    186997

Having worked in research in the pharmaceutical industry, count me in as skeptical about this product. It contains antioxidants, vitamins, herbal ingredients, and other OTC ingredients. I believe some natural remedies are efficacious or, rather, there is a chemical in them which is effective. But using vitamins to prevent colds & flus goes back to some work Linus Pauling had done many years ago but has never been clinically proven. None of the ingredients in this have been clinically demonstrated to prevent influenza. On the other hand it has been demonstrated, in limited studies, that positive or optimistic thinking may provide benefits in battling some afflictions. Perhaps thinking that this medicine will stop your flu causes the body to offer a better defense mechanism. OTOH, your can ingest as many herbal remedies and be as positive thinking that you want and it will never prevent a type 1 diabetic from requiring insulin. But still people buy Enzyte and Enhansulin and snake-oil hair remedies - P.T. Barnum was correct.

I would go with the clinically proven remedies. I had seen where flu shots were now available in many states. I would do some more checking around. I received one about a month ago and have had no flu though those around me have had one or two.

  10. Hey Tony, how's it going?  Are you surrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre you can't go this weekend?

    Did you get my money?

    180737

    Brian,

I just received the mail and it has not arrived yet. I am nearly certain that I will be unable to attend the finale. It stinks but that is why I posted this. I want to continue thinking, however remote, that there could be another home game to attend this season.

  11. Perhaps this scenario has been presented. But it is all predicated on the Bills continuing to win.

If the Jets lose and the Broncos lose this weekend, the Bills would be #5 seed and the Jets #6. If both the Bills and Jets continue to win their playoff games, I believe that could pit the Jets against the Bills in RWS for the conference championship. Correct?

As a season ticket holder, it's fun to consider the possibilities.

  12. Probably because it doesn't officially exist.  Last I checked, the spec wasn't ratified yet.  Cat5e supports gigabit ethernet, so what's the point?

To answer the question -- I have two RG6-QS and two cat5e going to every room in my house.  However, you might want to run at least 3 RG6, and use the 3rd one for Highdef.  I lucked out in that I can use the existing cableTV runs for my highdef.  The two cat5e each room lets me put both data and voice anywhere I want, and allows the flexibility to have two data instead if I prefer, etc.

Thanks - what do you mean you "lucked out". Shouldn't I also be able to use one of the two coax for HD?

  13. You probably know this, but this is already being done by third party equipment allowing you to distribute multiple video sources over Cat-5 cable to any location in the house. You tie all your video sources into the box, then run Cat-5 out of that box to any room with a TV, plug the cable into a converter box, then go out of the converter box with regular video cables into your display device. Can also be done with hi-def signals up to 5000' away with no loss in video signal.

Of course, this is done in the homes of the rich. Folks like us need TIVO et. al. to catch up.

    163013

I would like to ask you a question. I am building a house and have a data closet where my NID & cable TV will be pulled. Nothing is external to the house, everything is terminated at the data closet. The satellite signal will run to this closet, too. I will have a whole house surge protector and will also protect any external signal (phone, cable, satellite) in the data closet. All my distribution will be from this closet. I was planning on running cat5e for network/phone and quad shielded RG-6 to the designated locations in the house. I was considering cat6 but decided to go with cat5e. I am planning on using 14 gauge for speakers rather than 16 gauge even if some are low end. Based on what you know, should I run an extra cat5e instead of two RG-6s to everywhere I will have a TV monitor? Any other suggestions? Thanks

  14. We're going to try and make it. We live in Ashland. Sometimes we go to the Mulligans in Mechanicsville because it's closer. The Mulligans there is great because some of the booths have a private TV.

However, we will be in DC for an an event Saturday night and do not plan to return until late Sunday morning. If the times work out, all four of us will be there.

What's the smoking situation there? We will have our two children (big Bills fans) and I noticed someone else was going to bring their child.

  15. I lay tile for a living.  PM me, I'l be able to answer anything you got.

    153686

Oh, boy, wished you lived around here. We have a bunch of tile work to get done on our new place. We have a tile contractor through our GC but I'm not sure of his expertise. In any case, are there any of the heated floor products for tile better than the others? I am talking about the pad type of products like WarmlyYours.

BTW - I don't know why but when I read your post, I saw 'pipe' instead of 'tile' and I looked quickly to see if it this was a fictitious post by Johnny Wadd.

  16. Umkay, how 'bout some useful info?

    151270

I'll write it real slow, just for you.

Maybe Vic over compensates when he rates the Bills because he grew up around Buffalo and used to write for the local paper and cover the Bills. He does not want to appear a homer on a national service because someone will call him on it.

I am not saying that is why he put the Rams ahead in his rating system but maybe it's something he still keeps in the back of his mind. Just a thought I threw out when others were criticizing him. He has tried to be objective about the Bills since he left the News but I would say, if anything, he usually is more pessimistic than optimistic. On the other hand, not too much positive has transpired since he left.

That info was relevant to this discussion.

BTW, I saw your guest quote and Vic is making easily more than 55k from his various sources.
