The reason the Hypeman is such a joke is because they have all sorts of political 'reasons' why "the best college football player" is always an offensive skill player or a player like Charles Woodson who is a multi-talented player that gets scoring opportunities on special teams and/or offense. I suppose it was only the voters who thought Orlando Pace wasn't the best college football player in the nation his junior year, because everyone else knew it. I mean, 4th behind Jake Plummer, Troy Davis, and their winner, Danny Awful, I mean Danny Wuerffel? Yeah, right! Ask another great player from that time, current Tampa Bay All Pro DE Simeon Rice, how good Pace is.
