There are still hazadous industries where cutting corners and ignoring the safety of workers can be disasterous, i.e. mining. Unions represent the best interests of the men and women who work in those industries.... and that is probably a good thing. The problems are being inflexible to changes in the industry, or retaining poor workers just because they are part of the Union.

From my understanding of Libertarian platform, I get the impression there beef is not government in general, but a Federal government that operates outside of its intended scope (Larry and I have discussed this discussion before about "scope") and that most matters should be handled by the States... their stances are typically free market over goverment... And while I somewhat agree private markets could be integrated into many traditional programs, it has to be incremental change over time... Nothing makes people more crazy and feel more uncertain than radical change that as huge impacts on their lives....

I struggle with the issue of Unions.... While I think at one point they served a very valuable purpose to protect workers from dangerous conditions and poor pay, today the seem to be more about power and control, and less about bring an honest negotiation to the table when the time comes. I can only imagine if the unions that represent thevschoolsvarev1/2 as bad as those who represent domestic auto workers, it must be ugly... How do Ohio school rank nationally, anybody know? ( yeah, do the work for me)

I think for this very reason the USG, however one feels about it, has been setting policy and incentive to encourage alternative energy sources.... IMHO, the biggest issues with finite oil supplies is not that it will "run out", because I don't think that will ever happen (as another dominant sources takes over), it will be cost to obtain and extract the next new find. From what I understand the light sweet crude, the easy stuff to extract and refine is what is becoming much more scarce.... the new finds have been lesser quality raw material. i.e. harder to get and harder to refine into product. As oil increases in price, I think you will see consumption behavior change- I see more public transport projects as people save the individual care for weekends, special trips. For the USA, I find it troubling that for a long, long time we have not had a cohesive, bi-partisan Energy Policy even as evidence of supply is dwinlding....

with all due respect, if you spent 100K on a tractor and it breaks, what other alternative is there than to give up and watch Dancing with the Stars? I have a patient who is in Oil and Gas, he said they simple cannot find people to hire in North Dakota.... some of it being people unable to move because of the home not selling, others not willing to do that kind of work and some because of the harsh long winters....

Bush- Yale is a demanding school, even if you are a President's son. you still have to so the work, and you have to be decently bright to get in there. Don't know much about Perry, but I think based o his transcripts from college, we are about equal.
