  1. While I agree the Bills need a CB sometime in the draft, they have 2 decent corners in McGee and Greer, William James who will compete with Greer for starting CB, and Youboty--the jury is still out on this guy, but he did make some plays late in the season. Being 4 deep at CB and playing the Tampa 2 defense does not warrant the Bills taking a CB that early.

I see the draft going a few ways. Every one knows they need a big receiver early as in the 1st or 2nd round. Ideally, a trade with Minnesota who desperately needs a DE, down to #17 and still have the pick of any receiver you want

    or

Say the heck with trades like the past 2 years when they "reached" for there current cornerstone players Lynch and Whitner and take the WR you want.

    or

Take a talent like Harvey at #11, because the DE's are getting long in the tooth, just don't expect him to be the next coming of Bruce Smith, if he was he would be going in the Top 5. I accually think a DE early next year would be more viable.

but CB in the 1st round, I just don't see it with this team.

  2. 1. The 2007 Florida Gators had 9 different defensive starts from the 06 NC team.

    2. Of those 9 starters 6 of them were front 7 players. 3 defensive linemen and 3 lb's.

    3. Derrick Harvey has 20 1/2 sacks in 18 games. A little over a sack a game. Combined Ryan Denney/Chris Kelsay have 32.5 sacks in 79 games. Not even a half sack a game. Yes it's comparing nfl-college, but Harvey not only gets pressure on qb's.

    4. On 47 rush attempts against him during the 07 season. Opposing rbs actually lost yardage.

    5. When judging how ones game as an end translates into the pros. These are 3 aspects you should even consider before sacks.

    1. How quick off the snap is he. A dend, who can't get out of his stance, before a tackle can kick step and balance if virtually useless as a pass rusher. Unless he can make up for this weakness, with very solid technique.

    2. How well does he defend the run/Play with leverage. There's a tendancy for tall pass rushing ends to simply play high, and rely on their speed, as means to excell at the next level. Some of them, are so naturally gifted. It can work for a time. After a few years, it catches up to them. See Kearse, Javon. The #1 rule of playing perimeter defense is maintain your lane. Never rush to hard upfield too fast leaving your lane exposed to sweeps/counters/reverses. Unless it's a a pass play. Never crash to fast down the line.

    3. Closing burst. Simply put it's the absolute difference between a hurried throw, or a qb sitting pretty in the pocket. You can even get by, with mediocre initial quickness, if you have exceptional closing burst. The very good ones have it. It's easy to spot. It's how guys like Schobel, can get caught seemingly running to far upfield, then in the next moment pick up a sack. It's why guys like Chris Kelsay, will never be a difference maker. He doesn't have the closing burst, to hurry throws, or pile up stats. A guy like strahan, isn't as fast as he used to be. He's never lost his ability to close on a play. It's why he's still such a force.

Just some of the small things I think are essential for any nfl caliber defensive end to have. 3 attributes I think Derrick Harvey possess. Take his former teammate Jarvis Moss for instance. When simply judging potential. One would point out that Moss would make a quality pass rusher. He's got long arms, he's quick, with good closing burst. Jarvis Moss is not as strong as Harvey. He's more one dimensional. Doesn't play with good leverage, and is easily ridden out of plays. Someone like Moss needed, a well rounded end across from him, in order to bulk up stats. He needed Harvey more then Harvey needed him.

There's just certain fundamental flaws, that you can spot in a players game. If Harvey was an end who didnt use leverage, and simply was just quick. A player who didn't play the run. I wouldn't sound the trumpets for the guy. I would just as fast toot the horn of a player like quentin groves. I look at Harvey, and I see a guy who can be a starter for years to come. At a position where the Bills are aging fast. Again vs the need of a complimentary wr, where there's value to be found in later rounds. Who on the importance factor isn't even in the same hemisphere.

With that said why isn't this guy going #1. Are Long and Gholston that much better?

  3. Since the hard drive issue has removed the last 100 times I've said this, I will say for the FIRST TIME EVER:

Draft the most football value you can in the draft. That means something like the best player available or the most useful of several similar players. And do it based on what kind of contribution you expect over five years. Filling specific holes is a bad situation to be in. Sometimes it works out well like last year, sometimes it bombs. I think last year you could make a case that both of our picks were the best players available when we picked them. If we can find a way for it to be a big tall WR I love that idea, but if we are going to get more 5 year value out of a DT, out of a CB, out of a DE, out of a TE then we make that move.

The thing is, over a five year window there will be a lot of player movement and your needs will change. If you have taken an inferior player because you think you need him more in 2008, you are often giving up too much. I'm not saying we should take a RB or QB, but the draft should be more wide open to who we think will give the best contribution and football impact over five years as a football player, not as a patch for a flawed team.

So are you saying that all of those 5 receivers aren't worthy of the pick. Last time I check they were all rated to go in the first round (Kelly, Thomas, Sweed, Jackson, Hardy). I would be happy with any of those guys.

  4. I think the Bills will go for Sweed,

    Manningham Hardy or Jackson.

What about Devin Thomas, I think his stock is definately higher than Manningham and Jackson, and at the very least on par with Sweed, Kelly, and Hardy.

  5. The best scenario in my opinion is to trade down and take a receiver. However, if they are high on someone like Devin Thomas take him at #11 similar to when they had to REACH for Marshawn Lynch. #2 WR is by far the most glaring weakness on this team. Get your TE/CB in the 2nd/3rd round.

I personally like the scenario where we trade with Dallas for both of their picks, but would Jerry Jones do that if McFadden falls that far? Seems like a lot to give up for #11.

  6. Like some on this line of posts have said (to many to quote) - switching first round picks would allow us to take some bite out of rookie salaries. Plus, Jauron seems to be set on having Crowell man the middle of the defense. If we do switch we should still be able to get Lawrence Timmons or Jon Beason - two players that are a really good fit for the Tampa-2 defense. I believe a really fair deal would be switching first rd picks, switching the bills 74th (first third) for the Chargers 62nd (second rd) and turner to the bills - this would leave the bills with the following on the first draft day.

Michael Turner (deal: 6 mill sb & 2 mill rb after 2 yrs - 5 yr 10 mill w/ incentives up to 8 mill - for a possible total of 5 yr 26 mill)

    30th pick overall (Timmons, Beason)

43rd pick overall (Anthony Gonzalez, Sidney Rice)

62nd pick overall (LB or CB depth)

92nd pick overall (LB or CB depth)

This is only speculation - but with a draft like this, the bills would fill their need for RB, LB, a no 2 WR, and defensive depth. What do you guys think?

i like it, but I would rather trade away the 2nd rounder, give a 3rd next year and draft Patrick Willis at #12

  7. San Diego must have thought enough of Turner to tender him the highest possible tender guaranteeing him 3.25 million. If they thought he was not a franchise type RB they would have tendered him for much less.

To make a statement that "The Bills are NOT going to trade away a 1st round pick THIS YEAR, NEXT YEAR or ANY YEAR for Michael Turner" is ludicrious. None of us know what Marv and Jauron are thinking. Like the article in the Buffalo News stated, they may just be exploring every option.

  8. This would not be good. Buffalo should look at other alternatives. Surprisingly Green Bay hasn't been interested. Giants are believed to possibly get involved as the draft gets closer.

I was hoping for a 2nd and a 3rd (in different years). It looks like it will in fact take a draft pick this year and a first round next. They may opt to deal w/ Buffalo over the others only because the pick could be high next year.

  9. I think the Bills will try to make a draft day deal basically to see if Peterson actually falls (which he probably won't). Once Peterson is taken, I think the Bills start talking.

I don't think there is anyway the Bills move out of the #12 spot to switch first rounders with San Diego. A fair compensation would be this years 2nd rounder and Baltimore's 3rd rounder next season.

An offseason adding Patrick Willis and Michael Turner would be damn good in my book.

  10. I expect us to sign Brown this week. That would further limit our NEED for the 1st RD pick. Hall, Willis, Poz, etc....it's ALL good.

After listening to Marv on Sirius today, he commented on how rookie RBs can adjust to the NFL the fastest (w/ QB and OL the slowest). I really don't think they will be in another veteran back with a lot of mileage on his body.

I really believe that RB could very well be the first pick. If Willis is there, then that will make things very interesting.

  11. In the long run, the defense should be better but for 2007? I am skeptical...

    No more

    Fletcher

    Spikes

    Clements

That is a lot of leadership, class, and toughness gone from the team.

    The replacements:

    Willis (maybe)

    Ellison

    Youboty

a lot of ifs in that group although Willis could be a stud...

The 1st 2 picks better be LB/RB or RB/LB to fill those two gaping holes...

  12. Don't draft a running back with a major knee injury that can't play for a full year when you have a pro bowl running back who's dream it was to play for the Bills.

I personally liked the pick, because they were shooting for the moon. Unfortunatley, that shot didn't make it out of the backyard.

  13. I read that Chris Henry from Arizona or Arizona State, was awesome at the combines, and he's got great size, speed, strength, power. I think we can get him in the 3rd. Or 2nd. What happens with our 2nd round picks anyway? What's the big deal.

I remember watching Brown run all over the place in college. He reminds me of Eddie George. If we can keep him healthy, he'll get 1200. And Henry will take over in a year or two and be a stud.

Never liked McGahee. He's a punk. He'll fit right in with the Ravens. Probably shoot a few people, get arrested, acquitted, and run for 980 yards this year. Have a few more kids.

Chris Henry stunk in college...I agree that he is simply a workout warrior.

  14. We shall see just how "average" he is with the Ravens. You may want to compare what McGahee got to what the Bills are paying Dockery.

As for the allegation that he did not know the playbook, I think that it is a bit sad that there appears to be a campaign to bad mouth him in the press to attempt to justify this deal -- which equates to essentially the same compensation as what the Bears got for Thomas Jones based on the NFL draft value chart.

    We shall see what happens.

I think Willis WILL be an upgrade over Jamal Lewis, but you are mistaken in regards to compensation, the Jets deal equated to ONE 3rd round pick in the NFL draft value chart...the Bills received 2 thirds plus a 7th...
