I'm not sure you get the point on value

Then why did I say This:

I get your point about Value... I truly wish we didn't need an excellent blocking/catching TE...  I wish there'd be one as-good available in the 3rd-4th, but there isn't.

The key word there is need.  Again, if I thought Josh Oliver, or Drew Sample were anything close to Hockenson, I'd concede... -They're not.   This kid will be a tremendous help to Allen, and impact the outcome of games if used correctly.

So why do I need a TE drafted in RD1, let alone at pick #9? As stated above, OJ Howard had similar comments about him as Hock and other highly rated TEs the last 10 years.

    1) Because you're not going to find a better one later... Irv Smith is the closest you'll get, and I'm not buying him as a pure TE... Bringing up OJ Howard, a kid who hasn't been able to work with a decent QB or OC since he got in the league doesn't help your argument at all. -Neither does the breaking news that it sometimes takes players a year or two to develop within a system... I'm perfectly OK with that time frame. -Lets get him in here and get started.

#1 the Iowa tight ends got more catches and more targets then ALL their wide receivers.

Might you suspect that a team who throws more to the TE than all the WR is runnng a gimmic offense?  Does that translate to the pros?

If anything, more targets is an even bigger selling point. You want the kid who can handle 80-100 targets, IMO.  Look at what the league's top TE's  cranking out:

    Travis Kelce 2018        150 targets

    Zach Ertz 2018             156 targets

    George Kittle 2018       136 targets

    Rob Grokowski 2017   105 targets

You bet your @ss it translates to the pro's... If you don't have great wideout, or a RB who's prolific in the passing game like the Saints, Rams, and Patriots do,    a reliable TE is the next best bet.

I get your point about Value... I truly wish we didn't need an excellent blocking/catching TE...  I wish there'd be one as-good available in the 3rd-4th, but there isn't.

Hockenson @ 9 starts helping this offense from day 1.

#2 they mostly were playing against college linebackers who ever will play in the NFL.     Look at their schedule last year:

and look at when they played against.   Here are the best linebackers they played.

    Using Walter Football

    college OLB

#17   Andre Van Ginkel                Wisconsin               round 5-7

    #18  R. Connelly                            Wisconsin               round 5-7

    college ILB

#7  Blake Cashman,                  Minnesota                round 3-5

    #11 T.J. Edwards,                     Wisconsin                 round 3-5

By the way,  the success rates of drafted LB making the nlf by round is approximately

    round               success %

    3                           34%

    4                           16%

    5                           4%

    6                           5%

    7                            2%

What comp did Kelce play against at Cincinatti?

What about George Kittle? He comes from the exact same system at Iowa, and he's not lagging in the least...

As far a the LB competition goes, I'm sure Hock played a few Lorenzo Alexanders (UDFA), Matt Judons (5th round), and Danny Trevathans (6th round) as well...-We just don't know those kids names yet.

BTW I really like Hock, loved Shockey, like Howard, Engram and Njuko. The issue is the production at that draft position, the cost and the other players at more impactful positions. The positional value just does not justify the investment when there are other players who will add more production and value over the life of their contract

What could be more impactful than 3rd down conversions and TD's?  -Especially to a team with a 30th -ranked offense last season... What could be of more help on the field to a young, big-armed QB?

I think if we let the Jets, or the Cheats take Hockenson, we're going to regret it...  And regret it for a looooong time.

  4. Hm. Maybe go back and watch some Iowa games... Because of Iowa's offensive style, Hock ended up doing may of the things he'll be asked to do in the pros.

I don't think he's anything like Ebron at NC or Olsen at the U.... TBH, I've never seen a better route running TE at the college level... And a better run-blocking TE, you simply won't find.

Hock is one of a kind... If you were talking about Drew Sample, or kahale Warring, I might agree, but Hock is in a completely different category... -Easy money at 9.

Ayra wanted some D the night before the big battle.  Nothing awkward about that.

I totally wasn't ready for it... Had to change the channel, I was so grossed -out... Now, I think Gendry wouldn't be such a terrible guy to date your daughter... -He's (mostly) even-tempered...-Has a trade he's pretty good at... Plenty worse son-in-law material out there...

I disagree on the grooming. He needs a lot.

Tyree is just too big to really pattern his game off anyone currently playing.   I know he's a huge Favre fan, but he's going to need to improve on his own strengths rather than patterning his game off anyone else's...  Tyree makes a lot of NFL throws... Throws you simply can't make unless you know what you're doing... The right system is absolutely essential, but I think he wrestles the ball away from any shaky starter at QB.
