Trent Dilfer said it best this morning on ESPN

excellent post - analysis is spot on -
Don't let the defense off the hook. They were pretty bad as well. Cleveland ran the ball with ease, no turnovers, no sacks. Cleveland QB was horrible, but there were a number of dropped passes which bailed our D out (thanks Royal) When will a Bills D back ever jump a route?? The lowlight was after Parish fumbled punt. Browns had a 3rd & 9 - everybody in the universe knew a run was coming and still the Browns were able to run for first down, allowing them to run the clock down. How bad is it when you know a run is coming and still allow a big gain - after getting gouged all day in running game You also know a coach has completely lost his team when coming off the disaster in Miami they supposedly are "playing" for Jauron's job and have 9 motion penalties due, according to the players themselves, "a lack of focus" That's DJ, a players coach, treating his players "like men" and having them spit right in his face. Time to bring a disciplinarian in, and officially end the party. Its called accountability

The hall of fame in any sport is all about standards of excellence. By that measure, Bruce Smith was a no brainer, as his career personified the standard of excellence in countles ways. Congrats to Bruce. But Mr Wilson is a different story. He was a founding member of AFL, but isnt having your initial $25,000.00 investment turned into $800,000,000.00 reward enough? His franchise, in particular his mangement of his franchise does not approach any standard of excellence. For the vast majority of the history of this organization, the Bills have been perenial losers. 20+ years into its existence, that is, the mid eighties, the franchise was such a mess that Jim Kelly took one look and signed with the USFL. Read his book about what a rinky dink organization the Bills were when he refused to sign with them. And this hall of fame owner was the only owner in history to lose the number one overall pick in the draft to the CFL!! This hall of fame owner, rich beyond most peoples comprehension, attempted to stiff Wade Phillips out of a years salary, and was sanctioned by his fellow owners and ordered to pay. Having had the absolute good fortune to stumble across a (real) hall of fame GM in Pollian, the franchise enjoyed one great run of success; but our hall of fame owner could not stand success, fired Polian and later fired Polians (successful) pupils. The team is mired in a ten year non play off draught, more typical of its history. Thats mediocrity at best, not excellence. And having realized a franchise value appreciation of almost 800 million dollars, along with substantial operating profits each year, he still imposes a cash to cap spending restraint, and refuses to pay the going rate for coaches, because he has not made enough money from this franchise and needs to turn a profit every year. Most NFL owners want to win, incur season to season operating losses, knowing that theincreasing value of their franchise more than makes up for operating losses incurred. Not Ralph, he must have franchise appreciation and yearly profits, and winning takes a backseat to that. His team has been a losing joke for much of its existence, and that should have kept him out of the hall of fame

The lack of strategic thinking on the part of the coaching staff continues to boggle the mind. Getting the ball at the 25 near games end was a gift; not able to pick up the first down and deciding to kick a field goal on 4th down rather than going for it boggles the mind. Even if your shaky field goal kicker makes it, you are still down four with little time left and need a defensive stop and and a TD or the game (season) is over. You are no worse off going for it on 4th; if you are stopped you still need the same thing: a defensive stop and a TD. Every percentage in the world screams out for going for it in that situation; DJ's decision is to kick (and miss) a field goal. Game and season over. The team struggles but this coaching staff just does not help because they just don't get it in terms of game management and strategy. I like a lot about DJ, but that was just another in series of brain dead game time management decisions.

We have heard from a number of Bills players, and you can see from watching the games, that Bills opponents have basically defended the same way over the last 4 games; rush 3 or 4, drop 7 or 8 in coverage, including 2 deep. Yet according to Trent, the Browns defensive scheme "surprised" him; it was not what they saw on film and practiced for all week. Apparently they watched film of the Browns prior games and assumed they would play it the same way against the Bills; not a thought they may change and adopt the scheme that was so successful against the Bills in prior 3 games. Nice coaching job; tells me the coaches were out schemed (again), and that the Bills mentality is not to change schemes defensively based on opponent. However you cut it, it does not say much for the coaching staff. Downright scary when the Browns staff is doing you like that

Does anybody think bill belichek would have handled the end of that game the way DJ did? With browns on the ropes and season on the line he settles for a 47 yard field goal in 20 degree weather - against the worst pass defense in the league. you could argue it was reasonable if the field goal was last play of the game, but even if he makes it browns have time with a guy who just proved he could make it from 60. the correct strategy was to let trent throw a safe pass to get closer and run the clock down to zero. DJ is a proven loser and he proved it again tonight,

great and insightful article-still. For all of his whining and threats, the fact is that Wilson has made close to one billion dollars on this franchise. And fans complain all the time about the money athletes make!! How come there is never any of these complaints, threats to move franchise etc coming out of Green Bay? -
WOW the studity on this board is amazing. Chargers want a ton for LT's caddy, who is gonna want big money or be a malcontent; and every jack ass in Buffalo is hot for the "deal" Everybody but Marv - hopefully

RB Turner is at the point in his career where he is now or very soon will need to sign a big contract. Bills cannot accomodate that. They will soon have to pay big bucks to JP and Lee Evans - there is no big money left for Turner

So Wilson crafts a revenue sharing program to insure the "viability" of the Bills future in Buffalo. Not really. The provision placed in this plan states a team cannot participate/receive sharing if it is sold. In other words only a Wilson owned Bills are able to receive revenue sharing. If the team changes ownership, it almost is forced to move out of Buffalo, because it can't revenue share. Ralph looking out for Ralph once again. F the city of Buffalo. And oh by the way, for someone who says the Bills are not viable without this money, how is it he can afford to forgo the income that would be received from selling the naming rights to the stadium; the stadium named after him but paid for entirely by the taxpayers of NY

you just can't be serious - a first and a third. might be the dumbest post ever. Did it occur to you that there are 32 teams in the league and not one would even consider for one second making a ridiculous deal like that. When was the last time any team gave up a first and a third for ANY player, much less an unproven, back up running back

When will the whining of Hall of Shame owner Ralph Wilson ever stop. Look, there's two ways a business can be profitable; it can operate at a profit every year or the value of the business can appreciate ( or both) A simple example is a rental home, where it is not uncomon at all for the owner to incur more expenses each year than is received in rental income; as long as the value of the home keeps increasing, your ahead of the game. You won't find many people complaining, in LA for example, that bought their rental house for 200 grand years ago, rented at a loss every year, but have seen the house sky rocket in value, to say $750,000. Now Ralph paid $100,000.00 for this franchise, it has appreciated in price to 700 million, but he also insists on showing a substantial profit each and every year. The 700 million dollar profit just isnt enough. The kicker is that he has run this organization horribly. From the time of the AFL/NFL merger, the team was a laughing stock, so bad that Jim Kelly took one look and bolted to the USFL (read his book) Then Ralph stumbles onto Bill Polian, who finally builds a consistent winner and he fires him. Lucky Ralph, he inherits Butler and AJ smith - then fires them (over money) These guys go on to build powerhouse franchies while the Bills sink into mediocrity (again) Along the way, the great man Wilson is sanctioned by his fellow owners for his attempt to screw Wade Phillips out of $750,000.00. All we currently hear is this mega mega millionaire complaining about his finances. How many other small market owners are constantly threatening their communities with moving the franchise.
-
:D Simple solution to revenue inequality - those franchises (like Buffalo) designated as small market should simply be allowed to keep 100% of the their home ticket sales, rather than share gate receipts with opponnts. This puts a major incentive on the small market teams to sell out their games, with less emphasis on "special" seating like corporate boxes etc where they now do keep 100% of the sales. In a sense this is not revenue sharing at all: simply allows Bills to keep all the ticket revenue they generate

Sign Clements to a contract which includes a (guaranteed) 2007 salary of 16 million+; then trade Clements to Washington who can renogiate that 16 million dollar salary into a signing bonus. That way we take zero cap hit when we trade him, and the skins lessen their cap hit by converting that 16 mill into a signing bonus. This guarantees the Skins obtain the services of Clements. In exchange, we swap positions with the Skins in the first round,, and take Alan Branch, who fills a huge hole in the middle. Skins end up with Clements and the 12th pick in the draft. We are likely to lose Clements with zero compensation anyway.

I join Willis in wanting the Bills to play in Toronto
vegas55 replied to Pyrite Gal's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Its been posted before Regionalize the Bills by having them play two home games in Toronto - at least one a late season game - embrace the huge population & financial center that Toronto represents and most importantly - secure the future of the Bills in Buffalo at a very low cost - two home games. -
Robert Royal - A talented player no doubt, but in his own words " i lost concentration". Precicesly how do you lose concentration in the second half of what amounts to a playoff game? And did you also "lose concentration" on the previuos play when your idiotic block in the back in the RED ZONE for christsakes cost the Bills dearly. Similiar to your other idiotic block in the back that cost us the Pats game on opening day. I mean, this guy did more damage than I thought it was possible for one player to do.

The last time Bills/Titans played in a big game we had the music city miracle. The untold story of the music city miracle was how Wade Phillips, a great coach, totally mismanaged the clock. Wade was a great coach, but who week to week, just could not grasp the concept of game/clock management. In the music city miracle game. he kicked a field goal on second down, rather than use the extra plays to run the clock down to nothing. DJ is the exact same way; does not challenge close replay calls in the 1st half; and today totally mismanages the clock once again to give titans time to score a TD before half. Even decent clock managent at end of first half would have prevented Titans TD; in the biggest game of the year, a Bills head coach once again lets the team down. And you will never hear a trace of this from the dunces that constitute the Bills media. But a city that is 18,000 short of a sell out in what was basically a playoff home game does not deserve a playoff team anyways, much less an NFL franchise. What a national disgrace from a city of losers. Even the 2-12 Raiders sold out their game.

JP was the fastest QB drafted in the first round 3 years back. His legs are a weapon. So today, he has ZERO rushes; 7 less than slow footed Tom Brady. When you are not picking up 3rd downs and one; or in the last serires when you know a field goal is not an option and a QB draw or run on third down is an aoutamatic in terms of picking up a first down; you have to wonder. Titans did not HESITATE to use their QBs legs; thats why they won.
