  1. The administration is saying that people don't need to be quarantined, coming back from West Africa. But then they turn around and quarantine troops coming back. That's not a consistent message.

Handling the Ebola crisis unilaterally is basically saying the same thing,

    Perhaps you misunderstood ...

  2. No, Obama sent the military because only the US military has the logistic capabilities to move the resources to a severely under-developed theater overseas on the scale necessary at short notice within a reasonable time frame to address the epidemic.

Literally no other organization on the planet can do that. The US military is the only group that's even approximately prepared for a situation like Liberia.

What the !@#$ is this? I don't believe that at all. Who are you talking to?

You said the message was inconsistent so what do you mean then?

  3. guess I hit a nerve here, did not expect this much debate.

Good thread, Gives fans a chance to express their desires for a more explosive Offense. I mean who wouldn't want an Offense like Manning and the Bronco's, scoring points is what its all about right?

    wrong...

    ...Defense wins Championships...

  4. What distinction? Soldiers have a chain of command through the federal government, civilians don't but can be bound by the state health organizations. So what distinction are you arguing for: that soldiers and civilians can be treated differently, or that they SHOULD be treated differently?

Put simply, the question isn't "Why ARE soldiers quarantined and civilians not?" but "Why SHOULD solders be quarantined and civilians not?" Your point, while valid, is preternaturally idiotic because it's addressing the wrong !@#$ing question, you moron. :wallbash:

Your response to me before explains why, so you would have to take that up with the CDC, or individual state to state legislation.

Note: I understand why you believe the Ebola crisis is not something we should be handling unilaterally here in the US, and I agree with you. Declaring matial law across the nation on the other hand puts the military at odds with the public so there is no easy answer here IMO.

  5. He's doing it to prevent people from thinking twice about volunteering. But the message is inconsistent and the same rules should apply to anyone who goes over there and comes back.

There is a difference between the military and civilians because soldiers are following orders.

The same rules don't apply here and the distinction needs to be made.

  6. Not the point. The point is that the administration's message is inconsistent, if they're saying people merely coming into the US don't need to be quarantined, but then turning around and quarantining servicemen.

That's more a function of the state health services, not the federal government (though the CDC does have some quarantine authority - I don't know how much, but I'd guess not a lot). So it varies from state to state - Massachusetts law specifically states the person has to be infected, MD state law says "exposed." Generally, I'd guess most states can quarantine based on nothing more than exposure, on nothing more than a declaration of a state of emergency by the governor.

My point is without imposing Martial law the Presidents hands are somewhat tied so while he may prefer Doctors and nurses quarantined for 21 days, its not his call to make.

  7. Nope. That fails on multiple levels. For one, I realize you're probably a human but you call yourself a duck and Tom said human. Funny story: My hamster Sammy is constantly telling me he posts on this board but there is no way even a talking hamster can do that. First he'd have to know how to type and then find the url. Anyway I checked into it and the only posters named Sammy are recent and named after Watkins and there is not a single hamster posting on here. What else would he go by? He does love him some Watkins though. He thinks the name is why the Bills moved up in the draft. It's cute.

Anyway, I get the chain of command thing but if the Prez is sooooooo sure there is no danger from doctors why doesn't he think the same about soldiers who are making tents and "not treating patients"? Obviously he doesn't, or at least in one possible scenario he doesn't, so 't that's not it.

If it is a given that he feels an actual need to quarantine soldiers then he could say "I don't have the jurisdiction to quarantine these health care workers but I support it", but he does quite the opposite and this makes no sense.

Perhaps the chain of command objected so vehemently to non-quarantine that even the grand imperial president commie guy had to give in? That might explain it. Except he never gives in on anything like reading his daily security briefing and stuff like that. Perhaps he really wants Kent's Kegglers dead so by omission he encouraged the dopey doc to go to his bowling league. This Kent guy seems like a real prick but Ebola? Really? And how does the president even know him? It seems harsh and no offense but your answer falls far short and seemed like a lame attempt to take a shot at Tom rather than answer the actual question. Feel free to try again.

Obama doesn't have the same authority over civilians and again its our military's job to protect US citizens. They can get paid doing their job by staying together and isolated for 21 days.

I also don't think you can legally detain someone just because you think they could come down with something.

  8. No. I doubt there's anyone on the entire planet that can explain that.

    Different job descriptions and jurisdictions

US citizens/Doctors are Governed differently and the work they do is voluntary/much needed.

US Military on the other hand has a chain of command and its primary function is to protect citizens of the United States.

Taking Ebola home to Mom and Dad in the States is not part of a soldiers job description.

    Hows that Boss?

  9. Far more complicated.

Most people think it's just that easy...but bioweapons delivery is surprisingly difficult. The only group that with any certainty has successfully done it is the Rajneesh cultists in Oregon in the '80s, and only because their methods were brutally simple and not even as remotely stupid as water balloons full of blood - and they still had one of the best microbiology labs in the state backing them.

    Water balloons. Jesus. :wallbash:

hey man, I have to keep my examples simplistic for simpletons

    far more complicated how?

  10. It's a little more complicated than that. Just a bit.

More complicated then taking blood out of a live or dead host, pumping it into a waterballoon and dispersing the balloons in crowded places from rooftops? Or any number of other ways you could spray this into a mist and have tiny droplets going into the eyes of numerous unsuspecting targets?

How less complicated can it get?

    Hi dumby

More men have married Kim Kardashian then Americans have died from Ebola.

More Americans have died from a shark attack (2) in the last year then have been killed by Ebola

More people are killed in this country by lightning (average of 33) then killed by Ebola

    Oh wait, here is this

    http://www.npr.org/b...-catching-ebolaebik_custom-212aaf7466319b58697413b83d49b392a120fa4b-s40-c85.jpg

Am I even talking about a US citizens chance of catching Ebola and dying?

In my best DC Tom imitation, hey dumboyst,

    your an idiot

Note: To avoid getting another warning point I'm just going to stop responding to your insulting way of communication

  11. Half way through the season and the Bills Defense leads the league in sacks (28) and takeaways (18) along with being the best run stopping unit in the NFL.

These stats/achievments combined with a good passing QB on the Offense, but who's biggest downside is mobility, begs run the football. Get the Bills Offense into 3rd and short situations and allow Kyle Orton to pick his spots throwing downfield. Ortons proved he can sling the football and win games at crunch time. Flipping the football field with good D, and Running the football keeps Kyle Orton healthy.

This conservative approach to sucess is coming from the top IMO, and If the Bills freight train of a D continues with the pace its on I would expect more of the same as the Bills try to reach the playoffs for the 1st time in over a decade.

    "Calculated"

Playoffs Baby!!! We can do this!!!!

  12. Orton and Hackett seem to have good chemistry IMO, and I'm under the impression Hackett is trying to take what Kyle Orton does well, and his weakness's, and come up with the best plan of action against Buffalo's opponents.

I've heard the Jets game described as very calculated by some of the more football savvy Bills fans.

I think its a great description of how the game went.

  13. Another aspect to think about is Ebola can survive for several days outside the host in body fluids making them very dangerous in the hands of the wrong people.

All you need to produce weapons is someone with Ebola, or steal body fluids from area's outbreaks are occuring.

So for security reasons the military needs to get more involved IMO.

  14. Many folks like to use the numbers argument along with comparisons to other diseases on why people shouldn't be concerned. The way I feel If one person dies a needless death it concerns me. I'm concerned for the poor and homeless, the ones who can't run to the doctor when becoming ill. I'm also concerned with the possible spread of Ebola If it was to reach the right demographics here in the US.

Wow, how 1980's of you. Maybe ISIS is sending jihadists over to West Africa right now to become infected and hop a plane to the States.

With all due respect Gary, this was actually one of my 1st thoughts on the Ebola situation as it became headline news.

  15. Duck why the hell do you respond to my post then delete it? I know you never have anything worth saying but don't bother responding only to delete it. I can still see that you respond

The only threat is the imagination. The only worry with this right now is the Gov letting people in who are infected and they are stupid enough to do that!

I decided not to waste my time with ignorance farm boy.

  16. You're right, anytime there is infected blood present there will be a risk. But your odds of contacting the bloody urine or menstrual fluid? Ulcer laced vomit, saliva?

Consider the guy who died in Texas, Thomas Eric Duncan. The only people who have gotten infected were 2 nurses treating him, even though it advanced for 3 days while he stayed with his fiancee and 3 other people. And it's now been more than 21 days for his family:

    http://www.nytimes.c...-show.html?_r=0

375]The man, Thomas Eric Duncan, 42, had a high
    — his temperature was 103 degrees — during his four-hour visit to the emergency room of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital on Sept. 25, according to 1,400 pages of medical records that Mr. Duncan’s family provided to The Associated Press. Mr. Duncan reported severe pain, rating it an eight on a scale of one to 10. His fever was marked with an exclamation point in the hospital’s record-keeping system, The A.P. reported.

    375]
But the hospital sent Mr. Duncan home, even after learning that he had recently arrived from Africa.
    He was prescribed
and was told to take Tylenol, then
he returned to the apartment where he was staying with his fiancée and three other people. He returned to the emergency room on Sept. 28
and was immediately placed in isolation in the hospital. He died of Ebola on Wednesday, the only person to die from the disease in the United States.

    375]

Early detection and Quarantine are the two most important things we can do to fight Ebola.

There is no doubt once you become infected with Ebola, the later stages becomes much more contagious.

With such a small trial run here in the US, for lack of a better description, its not something we want to test over and over IMO.

  17. Ebola is a blood borne pathogen which means it's spread much like HIV. Gotta have blood or semen/vaginal fluid involved. But the hemorrhagic fever component could blood taint most any bodily fluid thus the extra precautions.

But the bottom line is the patient has to have progressed to an advanced state of the disease before every bodily fluid is a serious risk. Not just a fever.

But hey, let's panic because if an infected person touches a doorknob or drinks from a water fountain then we're all going to catch it and die just like when HIV/aids first hit the limelight.

Family and friends of the guy who died from it in Texas have not shown to be infected and it's been close to 20 days based on the second ER visit.

    http://ajnoffthechar...borne-pathogen/

"Ebola is a bloodborne pathogen. It’s spread in the same way as HIV, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C: when blood or other body fluids contaminate another person’s non-intact skin or mucous membranes. None of these diseases is spread by casual contact."

" Unlike for HIV or hep B or C infection, isolation precautions are implemented to prevent transmission of Ebola. This is because bloody secretions, vomit, and diarrhea are typical symptoms as the disease progresses. Because of the resulting probability of exposure to the patient’s blood or bloody secretions/excretions, both contact and droplet precautions are used (i.e., gown, gloves, mask, and eye protection) in order to place a barrier between the infected person’s secretions and the caregivers.

Airborne transmission has not been documented—however, because of the potential for aerosolization of blood or bloody secretions/excretions, most experts recommend airborne isolation precautions as well "

    Good post

Something that concerns me Gary, and its something I don't think can accurately be predicted, is how Ebola could spread in combination with another illness, something even as simple as gum disease. I hear sneezing isn't contagious, but what If your gums bleed from a gum disease.Does a toothbrush then become another way to spread Ebola. Or how dangerous is a womans menstrual cycle, or a bleeding ulcer, or blood in your urine from something else in combination with Ebola. What about skin disease's.

The list goes on and on...

  18. All you have to know about Ebola is that the only one in this Bills community we have that is worried about it: Donald Duckdog.

That tells you all the more important this thing is.

your ignorance about something as per usual tells me I'm on the right track to be concerned,

    hahahaha

  19. I would just like to know why anyone would feel the lack of that 30 point game would be Kyle's fault

    - His protection is aweful

    - Nobody is buying the play action

    - Fumbles by receivers galore

Do you realize that Orton was putting balls right on receivers in the Vikings game....they were driving down the field....and the receivers were killing the drives by fumbling the balls.

I havent checked it but it seems like Orton has converted EVERY red zone opportunity since he went in.....how many field goals have we actually kicked.

Like I have said many times previously. I have not given up on EJ Manuel.....I think having him hold the clipboard was the right move for the time being.......but offensive play has improved since we went to a vet. If they had pulled EJ out of that Texans game I FIRMLY believe we would be 5-2 right now

    well said John

    1. @ETNdudley After a win and I'm forced to read this garbage? You realize Kyle Orton is the 1st winning QB the Bills have had since Bledsoe?

@dog14787 That's a pretty broad definition of "winning quarterback."

@ETNdudley A rusty Kyle Orton is currently 3rd in the NFL in completion percentage, 5th in yards/game, 2-1 and its time to trash him eh?

@dog14787 Check out his career. It's been defined by streaky play interrupted by killer interceptions. He's Rob Johnson with facial hair.

@dog14787 No, I'm being dead serious. Compare their career numbers. Eerily similar.

@ETNdudley KO has won more games then RJ has started,3 times as many career wins, RJ went 1-7 last season with Bills, comparison is ludicrous

Happy to report today's article in my morning newspaper was much more reflective of how Bills players view veteran signal caller Kyle Orton.

I've done a flip flop, still reading the Erie Times News

  21. Kyle Orton is the 1st QB the Buffalo Bills have had with a winning record since Bledsoe. The rusty Orton is averaging 300 yards a game, 2-1 as a Bills starter, one coming against the best Defense in the NFL.

After the win I open up the Erie Times this morning and get to read two pages of how bad Kyle Orton is despite the wins.(John Dudely)

It was enough to cancel my subscription...
