  1. A winning BFLo product on the football field and ice rink!

You know what looks good? The new "Georgia Gold" chicken @ KFC.

I am going to preempt any future disappointment and say I will never try this KFC product because they will just eventually discontinue it! :-(

Hey... That is a new twist to the thread. JUST like watching BFLo hockey & football! Just stop watching when it looks good! You know I can't do that! ;-/

I tried the Memphis Hot or whatever the hell it was called? Trrrble. If the Georgia Gold is anything like the former, be glad you skipped it!

Along the lines of my previous mention of York Steakhouse, what happened to Pondersosa Steak House. Haven't seen one of them in about 20 years!

Another thing I miss was Welch's brief attempt and grape, strawberry and orange soda! For whatever reason it seemed to have more flavor that the other fruit sodas.

As a kid, I also remember the southern tier having a pretty wide selection of locally-made kettle cooked chips (only name that comes to mind right now, is Swanson's), but now there only seems to be a couple companies making them.

  2. Ahhhh yes the finer things in life. ;)

I don't suffer those types Chefy!!! Accepting only the finest things in life... harrumph!!! You accept the base level of mediocrity like the rest of us and you'll LIKE IT!!!! You get your cheese that comes from can, frozen fish sticks, the musical stylings of Creed and Everybody Loves Raymond for example ;)

a lot of those guys probably have basement dungeons or involved in other sick ****

Hey wait a minute, I'm not an anti sports guy and I'm involved in other.... :bag: Nevermind, nothing to see here!

  3. I'm definitely not "anti-sports guy," but as 4mer mentioned, the NFL is quickly fading in my rearview mirror. As the "bad fan" that I am, I stopped making the Bills appointment TV at least two or three years ago. I still follow baseball, golf, college sports, but the NFL is losing me.

As for running into "anti-sports guy" I only know of a couple and they aren't really insufferable about it, but I get a whiff "superiority" from them because of their high-brow tastes for the finer things in life!

  4. We were basically told "Build it, and they will come." We built Pilot Field (now Coca-Cola Field), which at the time seated 20,000. It was built to have the roof torn off, and expanded to 40-45,000 when/if we got our team. We had huge crowds the first couple years, outdrawing even the White Sox and Braves (who granted both sucked at the time.)

However, from what I understand, someone can correct me if I'm wrong, we lost it because of Toronto, Pittsburgh, and the two NYC teams, mostly the Yankees, our TV market would have been very small. On top of the fact that we'd be coming in the middle of an contract between MLB and TV stations, so we wouldn't have gotten any money until the new contract started.

Not that ESPN/30 for 30 would do it, but Buffalo has a lot of baseball history that people don't know about. The team that's now the Boston Red Sox used to be called the Buffalo Bisons. There was a league called the Federal League that was supposed to be a 3rd Major League back in the 1960s. The league only existed on paper though and never followed through. However every city in the league (except, guess who), ended up getting a team.

We also had the first minority manager in professional baseball back in the 60s. Lost the team in the 70s, got a AA team in the 80s. Got promoted to AAA. The whole fiasco of not getting a MLB team in the late 80s/early 90s happened. We won the American Association championship in 1997. That league disbanded right after and the teams were absorbed into the International League and Pacific Coast League. So as a result, to this day we still have that trophy.

This is fascinating information!!!! Good stuff Joe. Thanks for sharing!

  5. Do they still make those Old Vienna splits?

I remember this at the Brick Bar back in the day. As a young college kid, this seemed like a lot of beer. Not the most practical packaging to show up to party with though. Lugging a "case" of these in tow was a big time rookie move.

    Arthur Treachers

I used to think it was big deal when dad would take me here. The faux gas lights on the booths really looked fancy to a five year old me.

Along that line of thinking, I miss York Steakhouse!

  6. Her DVD and MTM show days were just a wee bit before my time, but watching a report on the news last night I was like, "whoa -- she was hot!"

    RIP

    Same!

I remember in my early 20s catching Dick Vandyke Show on Nick and Nite and I had the same reaction you did eball!

That being said, three leading ladies from Hollywood in one month? Settle down 2017... Lets not follow in your older brother's footsteps.

  7. Lots of ideas I totally forgot about.

Baby Joe Mesi, for some reason I misremember he wanted to go into politics maybe?

I've read some articles about eh AAFC Bison team and that would be interesting viewing.

RE: The Braves, I'm with you Augie, I barely remember them at all and would love to know a lot more about them.

The Norsemen, that's fascinating! I've never heard of them until just now!

The Buffalo Screw Jobs would need to be at least a three part series.

What is the story of how Buffalo lost its MLB bid in the 1990s?

I feel somewhat like a hypocrite because I live in Colorado and I now root for the Rockies which is one of the two teams created in place of the Buffalo franchise! I honestly don't know the whole story about why Buffalo didn't get a franchise, but I'm sure Toronto, Cleveland and Pittsburgh probably fought it tooth and nail.

  8. Like many here, I'm a big fan of the ESPN 30 for 30 series. It's one of those shows that I can go back and watch certain episodes over and over again. It's part nostalgia and part "I never knew that's what really was going on." There's been a couple that have WNY ties (Four Falls, I Hate Christian Laettner, etc...)

I was thinking the other night, it's a pipe dream obviously, but there's quite a few local stories that I've always thought would be interesting to the locals and might warrant a locally produced 30 for 30 type documentary.

The rise a fall of the Buffalo Braves

Richie Campbell, Marcus Whitfield and the Burgard Bulldogs of the late 80's

1950 NASCAR Grand National Champion Bill Rexford from Conewango, NY

    The short-lived Buffalo Stallions

St BonaventureBasketball Teams of the late 60s
How Buffalo lost its MLB bid in the early 90s

The WNY Little 3 Basketball Conference 1946-1957

Would love to read other ideas.

  9. the truck was when i officially was sure that rex did not belong here.

i became apathetic towards the Bills at that time and it was just simply that to put me off of the bills.

There have been so many "Kay Bullough and Hank Stephenson" type coaches paraded through WNY over the years, the Rex hire at least made me take notice, but not necessarily in a good way.

  10.

Probably the funniest thing with my wife's driving is that when it comes to parking, she has no feel whatsoever for the dimensions of her car. She has no clue whether or not she is too close or too far away from the line (the one either in front of the car or behind it). She has taken to using the backup camera to see where exactly that line is and then readjusting the car. It works, but I could save her some effort if she was willing to listen.

    So much this!!!! ^^^^^^^^^^^

She bounces that sucka off of curbs all the time taking a turn on the a side street. The anarchy that ensues when trying to park basically turns into, "Let me get out and I'll spot you" or "Just let me land this mofo!"

  11. Mrs. Bullpen is THE worst driver. No fore thought to where she is going or the route she is going to take to get anywhere. We'll be driving a restaurant less than three miles from our house and she'll ask, "do I turn here?" WE JUST CAME HERE LAST MONTH! DO YOU REMEMBER DRIVING ROUTES OR DO YOU JUST USE THE FORCE TO DRIVE?

Or she takes what I like to call "anti-terrorism paths somewhere" where she will take a completely different route somewhere than one she took two days ago. This is because she doesn't pay attention to where she is when she's driving or riding in a car. "How do we get to Mo's house, do we turn here?" "We've known Mo to live in this house for five years?!?!

Her braking and accelerating habits probably milk about 10K miles off ever car she owns. I swear every time, she hears a knock or ping in the car, she'll point it out to me and I'll ask, have you taken it in? The answer is always no.

  12. Had the chance to interview Irv when I wrote Buffalo Soul Lifters. He was very gracious and a kind man. That really sucks!

I always mean to mention it, but I forget because I post so infrequently anymore. I love this book. My mom (RIP) got it for me many years ago and it's one of those books that I read all the way through, put it on the shelf, go back and read certain passages over and over. It really was a great gift and wonderful read. Thanks for writing that!!!

That being said, thoughts are with him and his family. This is truly sad news. The big three in Buffalo were as much a part of my evening meals as a child as my parents were. Often times more so...

  13. The look he gave when the women continued to chat away was priceless...

I haven't watched it yet, but my wife called me to the TV she was watching, while I was upstairs watching the Rose Bowl, just so she could show me that interaction. I realize it was heavily edited, but man that was freaking hilarious!!!

  14. The cast wasn't too big and we were pretty familiar with most of the people, so they were able to further develop characters we were already comfortable with.

I'm starting to subscribe to this theory also Shrade! I feel like there's too many fringe characters (red shirts) that get just enough dialogue or plotlines that they become distracting. As boring as the "Rick Grimes, down on the farm..." season was, at least there weren't so many characters to follow. I temper these comments by saying, Walking Dead is on after I've normally watched yet another uninspiring performance from the Bills (accompanied by copious amounts of beer) so my ability to follow multiple characters is severely diminished! :w00t:

  15. The year was 1986. These are the albums I was listening to:

    Peter Gabriel - So

    Smithereens - Especially For You

    Billy Idol - Whiplash Smile

    Van Halen - 5150

Steve Winwood - Back in the High Life

    Paul Simon - Graceland

Beastie Boys - License to Ill

    Boston - Third Stage

Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms

    Ozzy Osbourne - Ultimate Sin

    Pretenders - Get Close

David Lee Roth - Eat 'Em and Smile

EDIT - I forgot to list my favorite out of all of these. It's between So and 5150. I'm leaning toward So.

I have pretty much the same list as Gug, but add:

    Public Image Ltd. - Album

    Metallica - Master of Puppets

Prince and the Revolution - Parade

    AC/DC - Who Made Who

    Run DMC - Raising Hell

    Talking Heads - True Stories

Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Liverpool (the one without Relax and Two Tribes)

  16.

It's nice to finally see them tone down Negan's cartoonish qualities for once, and give the character some depth.

Agreed. I was glad to see is caricature-ness muted a bit. Although, (and I apologize now if this plants a seed in anyone else's viewing) I can't stand the "lean-back-on-one-foot-and-bounce-with-every-single-word-he-says" delivery of dialogue! It just looks awkward and I don't know that I've ever seen a verbal crutch or tick like that on anyone TV or real life!

It is good to see some depth brought to the character finally. For thismuchtime, I genuinely thought he felt bad about making fun of Coral's eye stump. His gentleness and baby-talk with Judith (NO ONE WATCHES THE KIDS ON THIS SHOW SO HE MIGHT AS WELL!!!!), was interesting development for Neegan's character.

Of course arguably the best episode of the first half of this season is the one right before the mid season finale. Then it'll be months before it starts again. I hate the way they break these seasons up anymore.

And it no only coincides with the holidays, if memory serves correctly, it doesn't come back until after the Super Bowl! By then, I'll be right back to looking at my wife and saying, "who the hell is that again?"

I remember at last season's finale, when Talking Dead asked "Who do you think Negan killed?" I tweeted to them "I don't know, but I wish it were Scott Gimple."

Oh DC Tom, I wish I had thought of that one! Never change Tom... stay golden Pony Boy!!! :nana:
